Hey /p/
It's been a while since I've seen one of these threads. I know the old usuals still shoot so hopefully they see this and contribute.
Plus I keep seeing anons asking how to get into the scene so hopefully we can steer them in the right direction here
Personally, I have a few questions myself for people who have made it further in the game than I have. Before I stopped posting I was working independently and only getting access if I got lucky. Now a days I'm shooting for a couple small time publications here in LA but now I'm wondering whats next. Im being exposed to a lot of the bigger players while out at shows and they'll approach me asking who I am/who I work for and it's always a little intimidating. Ive met people who work for Goldenvoice, La Times, Redbull and other big companies and here's little ol me.
So what would your next move be to keep climbing the ladder? This city is kind of crazy

Any experience catching good shots of drummers? From what I've seen, you need to either go for a 200mm headshot or have access to the stage.

I feel ya man, Was an official Photographer for Reading+Leeds fest in the UK at the age of 17 (2014). Surrounding me in the press tent were Pros from Kerrang, NME, Rolling Stones etc
And whenever the bands wandered into the press areas for interviews they greeted a lot of the photographers like old friends, and there was 17 year old me feeling awkward.
Basically, fuck the pretentious twats. You do you, and if you're good, people will like your shit and remember you. Don't be afraid of them - that was my biggest mistake. Openly greet the artists and big publications if they talk to you. Most of the time people are just as much looking for a personality as they are a photographer.
Now I work for myself and work with big bands (and band management teams), they came to me in the end not the other way around.
>But I could have a twisted English perspective
>>2966535
bit off center.
and dude just cos you can do black and white doesnt mean you have to.
apart from that i like the grading and contrast in this pic. the rest are a bit week
>>2966258
sounds like you're in a great spot to concentrate on building up your professional network with the connections you're making at these shows. i'd be sure to cop some nice business cards if you don't have them already.
but i mean, if people who've "made it" are approaching you and introducing themselves why not ask them instead of /p/?
it seems pretty obvious to me t b h: ask the guy who's successfully been hired by p4k and is actively trying to be friendly to you, not the weirdo on /p/ who thinks being nice is a sign of weakness and that taking pictures is a waste of valuable shitposting time.
>>2966539
Not actually off center, just an impossibility with their stage design, its a tiny dive in a basement, and the actual stage itself isn't symmetrical, look at the top right corner.
And I know, I'm severely colourblind so I guess I've always tended to go black and white

There's just too many conflicting lines, if you go by the front of stage or the logo at the back it's pretty central. Go by the back wall or the musicians position it's off.

take a bitta critique you cuck you have no straight horizons. and the dude is off center and so is sign.
so the two things the eye is drawn to inst centered.
i wasn't on about the symmetry of the stage.
if you keep making excuses you will never be able to objectify your own work.

if you been doing concert photography that long i would expect better results desu.

I switched my major to something along the lines of journalism and photography so im hoping I can learn more.
>>2966541
Yeah you're right. When an actual conversation sparks I usually get information like their IG accounts and we follow each other. Other times though like last saturday I just get really focused on what I'm doing and forget to network.
Plus I'm kinda shy lmao

Nice man! Are you still working for that Portland pub or have you moved up yet?
Tomorrow im doing another Redbull event for their 30 Days In LA stuff. Should be fun
There's a gig I'm on the list for on Saturday as well but this is more personal interest. My friends are throwing the show so its just going to be LA punk bands and all the other shooters are friends of mine. Gonna be so much fun

>Plus I'm kinda shy lmao
I'm extremely shy too, but I always talk to the other photographers, especially if it's a hot chick. Same basic questions, who do you shoot for, gear, if they like the band, etc. I will always give them my card if I like them or if they tell me they want to contact me. More often than not we'll end up following each other on IG. I run into a lot of the same people surprisingly, gotten familiar with security staff at a couple of venues.
>that Portland pub
Yeah. Still mainly shooting for Vortex, but occasionally I'll get a job with a place called McMenamins, and they pay for my photos. Haven't reached out to other publications. That gives me the idea to print a physical copy of my concert portfolio, using my amazing printer I've been neglecting in the corner of my room, and make some appointments to meet with editors up in Portland.
I've been thinking about doing that same thing, but with fashion/model agencies to be an in-house photog. I already have my portraiture portfolio printed up on nice paper with decent presentation.
>My friends are throwing the show
You're going to have a great time, those shows always end up in a good night!
>>2967073
At a big venue, around 1,000 or so people (where they most definitely have good lighting) 800-1600, but if it's a small bar-type venue 3200 to 6400 with a fast aperture. It all depends on the venue, because I've been to small venues with great lighting, and vice-versa.

you do festivals
you take portraits of bands
you ask them (manager) if you can shoot the whole set on the stage
you do that
you do that as many times as you can
those bands eventually come back
hit them up to do it again
build a relationship
maybe go on tour
there's no money in concert photography unless you go on tour or sell out to shoot 10000 photos of a band and don't retouch them and then sell them to fuckin getty or some shit
>>2967955
Solid plan right there. I need to start reaching for more than a photo pass myself, and start interviewing/taking photos of the band off stage because that's an easy way of actually getting published in a physical medium.
There is a little bit of money in concert photography without touring, just hard to come by. I've only doing paid gigs on and off for the last three months and have made $950. It's a fun second source of income, and I get to meet a lot of great people.

Equipment failure on my part. I forgot to check the eyepiece focusing bit, so what did look like was in focus was actually out of focus. Something I've recently got into the habit of checking before shows on both my cameras because that little dial gets moved while in my bag/etc.

Going to a show soon!
How should I take pictures in the dark?
Settings and all.

Well what are you working with? How big is the venue? Is it like a smaller place that won't have decent lights like a bar or something bigger?
>>2976023
Fairly decent venue size wise.
Not sure about the lights, will have to see it when I get there.
Would you recommend get centered to the band?
How do I capture motion well with the camera?
Using a D3400 btw.
First time shooting an actual gig, any feedback would be really appreciated. 1/4

Im not sure how things are in your area but typically if it's a decent sized venue you're going to need credentials to bring your DSLR in. Like for the last four I put up my editor got me a press which allowed me to be in that area between the crowd and the stage. If there isn't a press pit or a camera policy then I suggest trying to center yourself out just so you have more options without having to move around a lot and lose your spot up front
As for settings
Just experiment a bit I guess. You can check my exif data for my exposure on those. I never dip below 1/80 on shutter speed and I move my iso a lot depending on lighting changes.
You can probably find some decent tips on YT too.
For me I have to rely a lot on my pp because I've only been at this for less than a year and still have a lot to learn
One more thing, LED lighting (the blue or red you see a lot at shows) will be the bane of your existence. Learn how to deal with that before going in

Sorry about forgetting to resize the first one, hope i compressed it to an okay filesize. 2/4

Gonna be getting a faster lens when my next paycheck comes through, should help, still working with the kit lens atm. 3/4

Nice! Lots of great tips anon.
Will find out about bringing the camera to the venue, and in the meantime practice taking shots at night and not so well lit places.
How do I capture movement?
Don't want to get blurry shots :/
Thanks!

Last one, just started using lightroom too, so editing advice might be needed too. 4/4
How do you guys get to shoot shows of big artists? Do you contact the venue? The artist's management or just get lucky?
For me, I built a relationship with a local rapper who opens for shows. Through him I've been able to shoot rappers like Lil Uzi Vert, Curren$y, Playboi Carti, Castro Guapo & Fiji, Night Lovell, and pretty soon Retchy P.
But I feel like me and the artist are having some falling out so I want to know how I can shoot shows without having him as my way in. Any tips?

great you shot a lot of well known artists
create a website
send that to the venue, local publications, or directly to artist publicists/mgmt
see where it goes from there
