I sort of like this. The little splash of light on her face is a nice touch.

My eye then goes straight to her hand then the bottle in the foreground then to the dude's hair at the back, none of which add to the image.

It's nothing special but is not awful either.

Basic error, the brightest part and highest contrast part of the image is the bright splash top right. Has way to much visual weight it just pulled my eye straight in.

On the pro side there is a nice separation from the background and I like her expression. Feels genuine.

I'l be honest. All four of these shots suck. I mean they really suck. That doesn't mean you can't learn, though.

I'll focus on the top one because I think it best exemplifies why they all suck, and there's no point in me rehashing everything for each shot.

First, your exposure is fucking dildos. Your subject is the two people. It's not the grass. It's not the dirt path. It's not the building in the back. And it's sure as fuck not the garbage truck in the back.

Why did I list all those things? Because they're exposure properly. The people are way the fuck underexposed. They're just fucking dark. Fuck, their hair and pants/skirt are practically silhouettes. When you're shooting shitty bright mid-day light like this, you've got to make choices. Everything won't be perfectly exposed. Fuck everything else. Exposure your subjects properly.

Second, speaking of the garbage truck: Be aware of your entire scene. The path may have looked inviting, but what does it lead to? Trees? Flowers? A fountain? Nope. It leads to a garbage truck. Contracts, couple: you're walking to your future of garbage.

Third, you've gone way the fuck overboard with editing. The fact that you tried to dodge the fuck out of your subjects and/or tried to burn around the subjects is painfully obvious. You've got giant halos surrounding their body where the exposure is fucked up. Don't do that. Don't do that ever again. If you can tell even for a second that you've tried to D or B, you've fucked up. Adjusting exposure locally can be a powerful technique, but it's also probably the easiest to go overboard with. You know how you could've avoided it? By exposing for your subjects and not the garbage truck.

Two things jumps out at me:

(1) When you've got a girl posing, one of the most elementary things that really helps with, well, everything, is making sure they elongate the neck and pull their chin forward.

That type of posture doesn't come naturally for anybody unless you've been a professional model for years. So as the photographer, you've got to direct them to do it. But man, it's huge. It'll really help out her posture, her neck, and all the smushed skin on her face. Just simply tell her to bring her chin forward a bit and it'll be huge.

Again: She won't do it herself. It feels unnatural. You've got to direct her to do it.

(2) You've got to learn some basic skin editing techniques. Her chin looks like a fucking ball sack here. This is a quick and dirty edit (since I'm working with a low res jpeg), but I think this will give you a few ideas of things you can do with just a little D&B. I used the 50% grey overlay method here because it's quick and easy for basic stuff.. There are plenty of different methods out there. Experiment a bit and find one that works. My favorite is using masked curves layers.

This isn't a polished edit. Just to give you an idea of what she'd look like without a testicle chin.

Thanks so much for the critique. This was my first ever """"professional""" shoot, so I was pretty nervous. I was shooting on manual the whole time. I think this is by far the best shot in the set. The light's good, the post is fairly good (although she feels a teeny bit hunched), the color is good, and she's framed well. One of the best things about this is that her outfit is flattering to her body.

I don't hate the idea of the retro mom jeans and overalls in the other shots, but they don't fit her well in a way which works with her body. They don't look so much like they're a retro style as they are costumes, and that's a problem. Be informed and influenced by the past, but don't just make it a halloween costume.

I still hate her facial expression most of the time. She doesn't have a hard model stare. She just looks annoyed. There's a huge difference.

This is just dull as fuck. Her skin tone is pretty much identical to everything else around her (except the distracting bright spots in the upper corner). B&W needs contrast. That doesn't necessarily mean harsh strong blacks and strong whites. But you need to be able to easily differentiate shit in the scene. This is just a wash of dull greys set against dull greys.

I think that concrete post makes the composition a little wonky when you look at it. I actually took some shots closer to the model and got a tighter crop in camera, which looks better than this shot in hindsight.

Thank you! I like this shot a lot too! She choose her outfits for each of the locations we picked out for the day. I'm sure if I had more of a vision in my mind I could have my models dress more fitting to the scenery/situation/whatever it might be. She does have a nice smile, and the whole 'I'm a model' stare doesn't work too well for her. Here is that same shot, shot in landscape and with her smiling.

Yeah, her smile definitely works for her. That's neither good nor bad. Just what works for her. I think the portrait crop is much better, but this is still a fine shot.

And clothing is a tricky thing. Often, when you see models in fashion mags, the clothing is being pinned and clipped in the back in hundreds of ways you can't see. So when you have just an average girl off the street wearing normal clothes, it doesn't translate well into photography.

Take this shot for example: >>2964441 In the front, it just hands flat. That removes her breasts and her hips. Same for the back. It's just bagging and hanging. It destroys any definition to her body. Also, the bagginess around the leg opening actually makes her thighs look bigger than they are.

She's not a big girl, but she's got some really nice natural curves. On the other hand, she's not very tall. With that combo, it's very easy to make her look squat and chubby. Take this shot: >>2964436 Same issues. Those baggy, cuffed pants actually make her look shorter and squatter.
