Posting from previous thread, 1/2:

Recently got a em10 ii after 14 yrs solely film. Range of features & ability to set functions to buttons is vast. Still trying to find my feet, where to put what.

Question is: Can you assign function buttons that are preset to different actions in different modes. so in A you can have iso set to back wheel but you can change mode to S & have it automatically set to a different wheel/function button as you've saved presets? Is that at all possible on any dslr/mirrorless ?

Repost

Every time I post in the stupid Q thread I never get a response, Negative, derogatory or positive. Nothing.

Does no one have an answer, wether you want to display your knowledge in a nice or nasty way??

Also, Say you prefered a certain style of menu, controls sequence etc. Or even wanted to import software allowing a control style from a different make or model of camera, Can you get emulators that recreate the system/styles through software strip out & changes?

This is possible in many types of technology, /VR/ alone argue about it everyday. Has anyone ever tried anything like this with dslr/mirrorless?

RawTherapee, pirating it, Darktable if you're on Linux or can build the Windows branch someone made on Github.

MagicLantern performs that function on a number of Canon bodies. I know of no other instances outside of that.

>>2957975
I guess you would call this a context based function button. For your camera I have no idea, but I doubt it. Oly's are known for their customizability though.

Browse some forums for your cam and see what sorts of custom functions and set-ups other people like to use.
>>

Sorry anon, I meant to answer in the last thread but I was afraid it would expire and lose my answer to the ether.

Yes, you can assign functions depending on mode. I have an EM10 mk1, but the menus should be nearly identical. In the Menu, go to the gear icon (Custom menu) and down to B or Button/Dial. There you have the Button function to customize the Fn buttons and Dpad, but as far as I know they apply in all modes. After that is the Dial function for the front and back wheels. In this one you can customize the wheels for all the M/S/A/P modes independently.

I strongly recommend turning on the SCP/Super Control Panel. It gives you a much better laid out menu for the most common functions when you press the OK key in live view. This is in the D (Disp) menu. In Control Settings, checkmark Live SCP on all the modes.

For all the hate Northrup gets, he does make good tutorials of the most used functions. I found the shutter modes bit especially useful. All sections are bookmarked in the vid description. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjbIiflFsD0

So I'm a pretty much complete beginner and am pretty lost on what to do. I would like to do close up nature photography and in the future fashion/ model photography because I am planning to take a makeup artistry course.

So my question is- what's a good starting camera? I talked to the only local well known "photographer" lady and she's been doing photography for over 30 years; she recommended the Canon rebel II.

Also should I invest in a (probably cheapest I can find) 35mm lens? Or should I just practice without or with a 50mm until I feel more comfortable?

How did he get the car to pop so hard against the background light? He clearly dragged a light down the length of the car, maybe with some diffusion based on the light that hits the ground in front of the car.

So if he did do that, then its an image stack? Is this possible to do in one shot? Maybe if it was a fucking long exposure so him walking wouldn't show up.

No no no no.... I dont trust digital Canons.. I recommend a Nikon D3400 (or D3300) hreat begginer camera. As to lenses.. if you REALLY want to learn, buy vintage Nikon lense. They're cheapo and so fucking sharp and durable! A beautiful prime 50mm (or what ever mm) would cost you around 30s. You can only use these in manual mode though. You can even record with them.

Why haven't any manufacturers created a relatively low-cost compact full-frame DSLR? I don't understand why they are so expensive in comparison APS-C DSLRs. Would a compact, simple, full frame DSLR for under US$1200 not sell?

Not gonna be "compact" if is DSLR. That mirror box, sensor and screen are going to add depth to the size, no way around that.

Not going to be cheap either, because manufacturing errors raise the price of bigger sensors exponentially. See pic related.

Also, muh captilast margins of course - they're going to extract higher prices because they can. Why sell cheaper when people are buying?

For low cost FF, get a used A7 or something if you're absolutley intent on getting something relatively affordable and full frame.
>>
>>2959649
why the fuck would you do this
>>
>>2960108
>compact, simple, full frame under 1200.

You can pickup an a7 for under $700, why would you want to spend $500 on a flappy mirror when evfs are more useful and don't make the product massive.

Either this is a ruse, or someone needs to be fired.
Surely anyone cutting sensors would have thought to assess the thing first to avoid the defects and cut numerous sizes so as to maximize yields.

the defects are results of the fabrication process, they're not in the wafer, you can't find them until it's done and cut up. also you can't just vary the layout on each wafer.

as an aside, intel gets away with CPU defects by including duplicates of functionality on their chips and then turning off the extras, you can't do this with sensors because you need exactly one pixel at each location.

tl;dr big sensors are expensive and will always be more expensive.

Doing a 'spot' WB in darktable works fine, but the white swatch gives the best result.
It looks to me like the garish orange of the packaging is rreflecting on the WB cards and throwing your results.
Testshot just the wb cards against the desired backgrapund and light, then introduce the article you are shooting. WB from the 'empthy' test shot and copypasta apply to the item shot.
>>
>>2960596
Also fyi, even whitout wb swatches you can usually get a good wb off anyhting thats chromed and reflecting the environment, just select the correct part(s) of the reflections.... and the grey on the razor itself seems to be fairly neutral, so it works too.

Thoughts on getting a college degree in photography? I'm taking IT courses right now and I kinda wanna do photography on the side. I was thinking of taking online classes from SNHU, which is allegedly a more legit institution than the for profit universities floating around. Honestly I'm a pretty snapshit tier photographer and I'm hoping some of the classes can at the very least give me a foundation of knowledge for things like working with studio light setups and post processing, neither of which I've been able to really learn on my own. Can anyone share their experiences with taking photography classes in college?
>>
>>2960601
i think you'd benefit more from learning how to make money from photography and getting the actual art form down on your own time.
>>
>>2960597
>>2960596
Thanks. You're right. Most of the time camera gets WB right, and in other cases I am usually able to find something neutral on the photo itself.
The reason for which I bought grey cards is because I need to photograph few things with highest accuracy possible.

You know what I mean, every asshole who takes a photo in the woods early in the morning does this thing where it looks foggy with dark greens and shadows. Sometimes there's a fire or a light in the shot and it's a vivid bright orange.

I like photographing drinks in low, interesting light. I'm worried I'm in a creative rut and although I think what I capture is kinda cool I worry everyone else will think it's shit. If cocktails and beer were your low light subjects, what settings would you use?

Here's the areas I'm trying to improve:

>Better depth of field - ie no blurred front edges of glasses
>Longer exposure, the better to capture the scarce/interesting light
>Better composition so there's something interesting besides beer in a glass (bubbles, condensation, logos etc)

What should I do to improve these shots? My first thoughts go to hue adjustment, but I sorta like the low light feel. Am I capturing this environment wrong?

Just go to your local Walgreen's or CVS, you'll pay around 5 or less and the quality is great, albeit Walgreen's loves to oversaturate their photos a bit but that could be a plus if you're into that (I know I am).

Why could film compacts have such small "full frame" lenses with all sorts of different focal lengths while full frame digital compacts can only reasonably do 28mm and 35mm primes?

wut
>>
>>2961520
What do you mean, like why doesn't it come with longer focal lengths?

If so, I figure it's just easier to make a wide-angle and crop the image to zoom rather than make a lens that zooms. Also don't get dust sucked inside of it from the lens expanding.
>>
>>2961520
Because film compacts had to be 35mm because every other smaller format was shit. Half frame gave shit quality and made all the photos vertical, APS came too late and was too expensive and was also shit and required you to buy some dumb meme film instead of the regular 35mm film available anywhere.

Now with digital, the manufacturers can choose whatever sensor size fits their needs so most of them opt for something smaller than full frame. It's not so much that they couldn't make a bunch of full frame compacts if they really wanted to, it's that they would be expensive and nobody would buy them when you can just make an APS-C or 1" compact which is smaller and about as good for much cheaper.

And by the way, most film compacts with primes were in the 28 to 40mm range anyway, what cameras are you thinking of that aren't? There were zoom compacts, of course, but they were absolute shit and had incredibly slow variable apertures.

>Why could film compacts have such small "full frame" lenses with all sorts of different focal lengths

They could?
I only remember wide angle compacts.

But they were mostly empty boxes, so they could fit a collapsing lens.
>>
>>2959311

Can I ask, How long is the lag on your model between the cameras response to certain actions, such as:

Moving from optical view finder to the live view screen ? (Doesnt seem as bad moving the other way from back screen to optical?)

Pressing the play button to review the recent photos?

As i've said I've never had a digital camera, but the speed of response seems slow to me.
Am i simply expecting too much?
I read a fair bit before purchase & it seems its not unheard of for these cameras to have issues out of the box.
>>
>>2961520
No mirror, so less glass required. Leaf shutter, so less stuff between lens and focal plane. Snapshit optics, because of building down to a price point. No aperture blades, because colour negative film and built-in flash.

That's what little bittle film cornpacts are made of.

It seems most Nikon vertical grips come with a little external cord to facilitate the second shutter button.

Are there any Nikon grips (to fit d5200) that don't need an external wire and just function on their own?
>>
>>2961520
>Why could film compacts have such small "full frame" lenses

Because Film (except Velvia, Ektar and Portra) couldn't resolve more than ~2 Megapixel of 'data'. There simply was almost no need for overly corrected lenses.

Just take a look at some film p+s lens conversions to digital. The image quality is utterly disgusting.
>>
>>2959934
what's the difference? generally sharpening tools are for repairing purpose. e.g. if you missed focus or something different went wrong. a good sharp image is just as sharp as a good lens on a decent sensor/film (in case of sensor with a decent sharping algorithm in the raw-converter, and in case of film a decent scaler with good glass) with spot-on focus.

>Are there any Nikon grips (to fit d5200) that don't need an external wire and just function on their own?

No, becasue the D5200 doesn't have a connector for a grip like higher end cameras have.

You can remove the cable if it bothers you, but then the shutter on the grip won't work of course.

From what I understand the output sharpening is to compensate for loss of sharpness caused by the JPEG compression.

>sharpening tools are for repairing purpose. e.g. if you missed focus or something different went wrong.

Nonsense.

Sharpening is done to emphasize edges.
The amount of sharpening is an esthetic choice, but most people prefer at least some sharpening in the vast majority of pictures to make them "pop".

Focus and sharpness are two completely different things.
And even with perfect glass, a perfect sensor and perfect focus you can't always achieve a sharp edge because it just wasn't there.
>>
why are aperture blades in lens not bodies?

Another reason in addition to the above is digital sensors prefer to receive the light perpendicular to the surface, but light coming in at oblique angles doesn't affect film so they need less correction at the back.

For me, it's roughly half a second both ways to transition between screen and viewfinder. Same for the play button.

You can put the EVF on manual control in the J-gear menu, Bulit-in EVF, and turn off Auto EVF. Then you push the little button with the rounded square icon next to the viewfinder to toggle between screen and viewfinder.

The menu speed feels pretty average to me, compared to the entry level DSLRs I have tried. You'd probably have to go into the 1500+ price range to get supper speedy mode transitions. The only time I notice slowness is when the viewfinder/screen framerate drops a little during use of focus peaking.

Another tip: turn on the histogram, makes judging exposure much easier.
>>
>>2961665
>sharpening is done to emphasise edges

Nonsense.

Sharpening is done to offset the inherent blurriness of bayer filter images.
>>
>>2961664
You buy a sony full frame mirrorless.
Did you not get the memo, memecam shooters think bokeh is a meme.

>>2961636
No, 135 has around 16mp equivalent resolution. Film compacts had small lenses because there was no expectation of quality that we would expect from a full frame device, having $10 cameras with lenses that cover the ff image circle is obviously very different to today where ff bodies start at $1000.

The lenses also aren't as compact as they may initially appear, remember the film sensor plane would be 1mm off the back of the body.
>>
>>2961787
Yeah nah the lenses are pretty compact. A lot of the time on those zooms the rear elements are right on top of the film. The difference is that it was always fine to sacrifice lense speed for size. When there's no TTL viewing, metering or focusing to be done, and when the cameras are designed around 400ISO film as the norm, and when you've got a phat 2cr5 to just blast flash anytime you drop below 1/30, the small aperture just helps guarantee an in focus shot.
>sharpness is a fucking bourgeoise concept anyway, peon
>>
>>2961719

Right part of image is retarded.
The llight does not fall vertically in first case.
The llight falls at much smaller angle in second case.
The sensitivity is 4 times smaller in first case.
>>
>>2961784
All squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares; emphasizing edges offsets the blur of bayer filter images, but you can also go beyond what you would need to do that and also focus exclusively on edges rather than any high-frequency detail.

Two questions from a noob.

1. What's wrong with deleting images "in camera"?

2. I have a small mark on the inside of one of my lenses. It's only noticeable on photographs when it's against a light background, but now I've seen it it's quite annoying. Is the clone-stamp tool in Photoshop an acceptable fix for it?

Not much.
It can make your card a little slower, but I doubt you'll ever notice it.
And some people claim it could corrupt the card but I'm fairly sure that's bullshit.

>2. I have a small mark on the inside of one of my lenses. It's only noticeable on photographs when it's against a light background

It on your sensor, not on your lens.

The smaller the aperture, the more visible it is.
That's why you don't see it with your fast prime. - try shooting it at its smallest aperture.

Get a sensor cleaning kit.

>Sharpening is done to offset the inherent blurriness of bayer filter images.

A "sharpened" image can look a lot sharper than an image from a camera without AA filter.

You are confusing sharpness and resolution.
Don't worry, it's a common mistake.

The TL;DR is that sharpness is the contrast over a small distance.
light gray -> dark gray has little sharpness.
light gray -> white -> black -> dark gray has more sharpness.
>>
Best camera under £200? I'm mostly concerned with the quality of its colours. MP doesn't matter so much.
>>
Quick question. Pro photographers keep telling me the equipment doesnt matter but if thats the case why do they always have the most expensive equipment?
>>
>>2962904
It allows them to do things cheap equipment won't.

I am not a pro but I assume they're referring to the fact that a knowledge of composition, lighting, exposure etc. are much more important. A pro can probably get a better picture with a phone camera than an amateur could would £10,000 worth of gear.
>>
Is it possible to git gud if you have good technical understanding but no artistic mind. Can it be learnt or do you have to be born with it?
>>
>>2962904
Because the most expensive equipment is harder wearing, has better autofocus, better customer support, better battery life, better rear screen, better viewfinder. None of these things have any bearing on the images actually coming out of the camera.

As far as actual hardware and image quality, it's the same sensor in the pentax k30, sony nex c3, pentax k5ii, fuji xe1, fuji xt1, fuji xpro1, nikon d7000 and this list goes on. Each of these will give very comparable image quality, despite ranging in price from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand. In reality there are only 5 or different sensors on the market at the moment, and they're either made by Canon, or Sony (Canon is found in canon cameras, Sony is in everything else, Canon is about a decade behind)

Pro's have better photos because
1. They know what they're doing, a camera is a tool, just like a guitar or chisel, no-one just picks it up and plays a song or carves a statue, it takes years of practice.
2. This extends to software, post processing is a massive part and a massive learning curve
3. They take a lot of photos
4. They have good lenses, if you want lots of smooth bokeh you need fast, expensive lenses.

There is one factor that will effect your image quality, and that's if you decide to go "crop" or "full frame", go do some google if you're not familiar. Full frame will give sharper, cleaner images, with more, better quality bokeh. At the expense of being more expensive, and needing larger, more expensive lenses.

>>2962913
Yes, take a lot of photos, identify what works and what doesn't, expand on what does work, repeat.

>>
>>2963083

Anything digital you can get with manual controls so you begin to learn the basics of exposure, or any old manual focus film camera from the 80's.

The camera market is extremely volatile at this low price point, and you can either get a gem or totally ripped off. There are more models than are worth listing at this point, so just look for something that has manual controls and was made in the last 5 years or so.

It's also worth considering just using your phone until you have more money for a proper dslr or high quality compact.

I don't even have a fancy smartphone or anything. I'm one of those fogey millenial hipsters who just has a computer and a landline despite being under 30.

Seeing how good some smartphone cameras are getting I've considered getting one partially for that reason, though. Figure it'd be cheaper than a good camera and have a few extra features that could come in handy, but I doubt I can get a decent phone for less than 100 bucks.

Anyways thanks for the tips.

Are there any "beginner exercises" to help stop using Auto mode and learn composition?

I just got my first real camera (a D750) and I'm struggling to stop using auto mode because it's easy (despite the fact I know most of my shots are overexposed due to the sky) and I keep using the very centre of my frame as the positioning for my subjects. I took about sixty shots yesterday and they're all pretty similar in terms of composition and almost all are too bright in the sky and too dark everywhere else.

auto mode isn't a bad idea unless you need a specific combination of aperture and shutter speed. wish i had automode back in the day. the way i learned shooting manual is just shooting manually, but it was still a crapshoot for me.

D750, just set it to underexpose a stop or two and bring it back up in post, should handle any sky issue.

look at paintings of subjects you photograph and check out "dynamic symmetry" http://www.dynamicsymmetry.net/the-art-of-composition-basic.html i think it's way more interesting than rule of thirds, but common belief is that rule of thirds is best for a beginner. i think that's kind of arbitrary though, you could just as easily follow a rule of twos or fourths or fifths and come out with something balanced and different.
>>
>>2963374
You need to ask yourself what your goal is with each picture. If all you're doing is documenting what you are seeing then just throw it in 'P' or Auto (without flash) and you'll get the results you need. Hell, at least then you can stop worrying about exposure and focus on composition.

However I'd suggest you set up a static scene, with a lot of colors in it and good lighting, and put your camera on a tripod. Then get a notebook and write down what you changed from the settings for each picture. Start with AWB & flat contrast/tone/sharpness etc settings and change one thing at a time. Then you can go through and say 'I really liked picture 8 and here is what settings I used and how they made a difference compared to the other pictures'.

>>2963380
I like to think I have some artistic sensibility, but my initial run of photographs have been to see what I enjoy shooting. I bought a 50mm because it seemed like a decent middle ground and I decide whether I wanted a new lens that was wider or more narrow depending on what I enjoyed and how often I thought "I wish this was wider" or "I wish I could zoom in".

I think I've picked the right time of year because even though the leaves are going to start falling, at least they have plenty of interesting colours.

A tripod will definitely be my next investment but given that the camera is so heavy I need to make sure it's a good one.

Thanks for the advice. I actually got talking to another photographer when I was walking around and he said "The most valuable thing for me was looking at the metadata" to determine what settings gave what results.

What the hell is micro-contrast and how come nobody including that fat angry photo man on youtube can explain it but talk about it as if its the be all end all? can someone show what an image with "good" micro-contrast looks like vs bad? I don't understand how it is different from, say, sharpness.
>>
>>2964232
Microcontrast is how much contrast appears on a small scale. Sharpness is usually meant to describe sharp edges regardless of haze, like you can have a low contrast and hazy photograph that's still in focus and tack sharp.

Think about it as levels of detail. Imagine a photo highpassed at, say, 1px. This is where sharpness happens, in the smallest level of detail. Microcontrast would be the contrast of a 5 or 10 pixel area.

To word it differently again, the amount of contrast that can exist in a small area, which would be lowered by the presence of glow or haze.

For another way to think about it, you can lower microcontrast of an image by duplicating the lower, blurring it a bit, and fading that into the original image.
>>
>>2964237
I think I actually understand it now, thanks.

If you don't mind my asking, which lenses are good at producing microcontrast (don't care about mount), and while I'm at it, why is regular sharpness measured over microcontrast on muh DXOmark and most review sites? Is it just easier to measure?
>>
>>2964247
Don't know, I don't really care about lenses. I've used the same lenses for years.

I think the reason, or a reason why, regular sharpness is measured over microcontrast is because it doesn't require an explanation each time. Maybe that'll change eventually, I mean we didn't always put MFT charts on lens reviews or advertisements.

Tiny sensor, slow lens.

A sony or fuji mirrorless would do you a lot better, I'd probably veer towards sony sue to their better evf, better lens selection, works with adobe and the mounts not gonna be dead within 3 years.

Shit tier sensor.

If you want decent zoom in a compact package, your only option is the Panasonic TS/ZS100, which has a larger 1" senzor while still retaining small size and 10x optical zoom.

So I have been thinking about getting into amateur photography/video/vlogging and was thinking about buying a cannon eos rebel t2i as they are relatively cheap, and seem like decent quality. Is this a good idea or no? Any better recommendations?

Everyone talking about the magical 50mm, are they talking about full frame 50mm?

Sure, I guess you can still use it, but I was asking if people refers to the 50mm as a full frame or cropped version. And the other anon answered my question.

If yes, what settings should i use?
>>
>>2969783
You'll need a wide-angle lens and stopped-down aperture to get everything in focus.

http://www.outsight.com/hyperfocal.html#hyper Set it to Digital LMF 1.5 and enter in your shortest focal length and smallest aperture to see how close you can get things in focus, and then set the aperture wider and wider and see how wide you can get it while still getting like 6-9 feet ahead in focus.

Then take the photo, but underexpose a bit to compensate for highlights, and then in Lightroom or Photoshop just make it blue. Probably just slammed the white balance to the side and adjusted levels.
>>

You will need to research it yourself. There are myriads of compact cameras made, there is no definitve answer that you should 100% get any specific one of them. Most of them are just fine.

Every camera with 30x zoom in a flat body is a huge compromise. If you are fine with it, go for it.

There is a number of better cameras with smaller zoom factor.
>>
>>2971169

For example, it is unlikely that you will get good results under bad lighting. It will be almost as bad as iPhone camera.

When shooting black & white (more so for film but digital as well) how do you choose a color lens filter?

The ones I see most common are red, yellow, orange, & green. What are each of these used for?
>>
>>2975525
Whatever filter you use, that color in the image will appear brighter. The complimentary color will appear darkest.

Red/orange/yellow filters will make skin bright and skies dark to varying degrees. Green filters will brighten plants etc.

The filter factor describes how much light is being blocked/how intense the filter is. It's usually designated in a logarithmic fashion. An R2 filter will need twice as much light (1 stop), an R4 filter will need 4 times as much light (2 stops) etc. etc.

does anyone have some examples of someone who has done a long exposure shot with two or more manually triggered flashes, with a shallow DOF and changed the focus mid exposure?.
Like:
>≈15 sec exposure, 2.8 aperture or thereabouts in a dark room, possibly with a nd filter.
>focus on subject 1, placed around a meter or two away
>release shutter.
>trigger flash 1 on subject 1.
>focus on subject 2, back in the distance, by having marked the focus point on the lens beforehand.
>trigger flash 2 on subject 2.
>exposure is done.

is it worthwhile trying this without a cine lens, or will the focus breathing mess things up too much?

i did some proof of concept thingies with a double exposure with my digital camera, since the lens is motor focused and wont refocus during exposures.. it sort of works, but is a lot of hassle.also using the effect should be really motivated as its prone to just be a terribly gimmicky effect.
this one is done in a dark room with a headlight..
its fun how the middle area is oof.

Shoot in manual but fuck RAW. The most important thing to do right now is learn exposure and composition, neither of which has anything to do with RAW.

Shoot RAW once you start getting images you'd be legitimately sad to lose. Until then the extra information RAW files contain will do nothing other than filling your memory up faster.

There's a shadow under the car that can only be coming from an overhead light source. The intensity of the light is also much stronger along the top of the doors and roof. The light is definitely coming from overhead, not dragging a light the length of the car.

My guess is either the car was shot in the studio and comnposited or it's a long exposure with an open box above it on a boom.

That's not shadow, that's bat.

The bat is illuminated by a very bright flash for a very short time (somewhere around 1/10,000 of a second), but the shutter is open for the rest of the 1/160 of a second.

Since that's a relatively short shutter speed for exposure, the bat comes out as a silhouette against the sky, but since it's too long of an overall exposure to stop motion, you get a motion blurred silhouette.

How do I find out what lenses are compatible with my camera? Besides nikon going with nikons, canons working on canons etc etc
>>
>>2982245
called frront-shutter sync, produces some weird shit

I've got a nikon d5200.

When I half press the shutter the little autofocus box in the viewfinder goes where it thinks it should go.

When I view with the screen I can control where the autofocs goes.

Is there a way to control the in-viewfinder focus box?

read your manual, cover to cover, twice.

How much flash is too much?

>>2982849

if your image is overexposed, you're using too much flash.

What's the best way to get a bunch of photos to match in post?
>>
Should i go closer to the object or zoom while using Aperture Priority on Canon EOS 1200D?

Also what should shutter speed be?
>>
>>2982973
lightroom has a new reference view function. just click it and dragndrop a picture in the reference box, and grade all your images after that one.

if those pic relateds are what you want to match, use the set graypoint whitebalance option thingie on the background, that will probably give fairly consistent results
>>
>>2982993
Exactly what I was hoping for ( I remember someone mentioning something similar in Photoshop a few years ago)

Do you know if lightroom mobile also has that feature?

I have a bunch of images of birds flocking. How should I pick the best? What are some things to look for that makes an image of this kind interesting instead of just chaotic?
>>
I just bought a rebel t5 off amazon which was bundled with a 18-55 and a 75-300.
It will be here Saturday, and that day I need to get the best possible pictures of a empty abandoned mansion (inside and out, I can get anywhere in the building)
How do I get the best I can with this gear in about 4 hours?

I would like to take my photoshop skills to a next level and get into composite photography. Merging different layers together and create somewhat surrealistic images.

Can you guys recommend me any good tutorials/websites on that topic?

Merci beaucoup!
>>
>>2983826
use tripod, low iso, aperture around f7-9 and long shutterspeed to compensate.
>>
>>2984011
Any recommendations on cheap tripods?
And should I worry about lenses?
>>
>>2984203
most tripods will do the trick, price affects lifespan and how fast and easy it is to handle. just use a 2sec self timer to remove vibrations from your hands.
kit lenses are okay when used at high apertures. if you have to ask people these questions, you wont get much more iq out of a more expensive lens anyways.

I started photography a few months ago and got a 50mm. I was thinking a 24-85 would suit me best as I'm more in to landscapes than wildlife/sports. Would that be OK? I'd buy a 24mm prime but I can't justify that kind of money.

If I were to buy a third lens at a later date would 200mm be a good length for wildlife? I'm never going to be doing it as a pro so it's purely for a hobby.

The tamron 28-75 is very affordable second hand and a fantastic performer, especially on crop.

On the long end, i picked up my canon 70 200 f4 L for £200.

Both lenses are incredibly sharp in the centre, but still perform above average on full frame, so they should last the length of your hobby
>>
>>2984633
The one I'm looking at (Nikon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5) is £429 which is on the upper end of my budget, but I'm happy to pay it. Is that better than the Tamron? The lens, not the price.
>>
>>2984309
Thanks, I won't be able to go today anyways, so I guess it doesn't matter. Scoped it out last night, and the place was already hot. Thanks for the help

Hey, I'm really a /out/ /k/ /diy/ guy but my girlfriend really loves photography so I got her a nikon d3000 and some basic accessories. How did I do? (To clarify I know nothing of cameras or photography)

How come my photos don't come out crisp like this one? Using a K-3 with 18-135mm lens. I also have a 70-200 Tamron.
>>
>>2984971
Cause you don't photoshop as hard as that person does.
>>
>>2985003
I don't own photoshop, so I guess that's 100% of my problem. What can I do on the camera to get as good as that?

Another, possibly separate question:
Who here wears glasses? How do you manual focus? I feel that when I manual outside of macro, the focus is always off.
>>
>>2985005
You don't need photoshop, and photshopping photo to hell doesn't make it good. No amount of editing will save a boring subject. Edited or not, it's a very photogenic scene with some blue and orange contrast.

If you camera has a diopter you can use that to adjust for your glasses so you can shoot without them.
>>
>>2985005
Oh you said on camera. You could screw with the white balance and change some settings, but you should just shoot in RAW and save any editing for post processing. But try and get the best exposure possible for the shot so you have the best stuff to work with in post. You don't need photoshop, any basic processing program can handle raws.
>>
>>2985009
>If you camera has a diopter you can use that to adjust for your glasses so you can shoot without them.
I still feel that the photos still don't come out crisp enough.

>>2985017
Always shoot in raw. I think maybe my focus is wrong? My default for auto focus is AF-S (single shot) and a wide auto focus area, 15-45 but the photo still seems to come out crisp only in a small portion and the rest more soft.

Do you have a remote shutter? If not get one. I'm assuming you are at least shooting on a tripod and blocking the wind right sempai?
>>
>>2985158
Have a remote shutter or will use the 2sec timer. Typically not windy. When I shoot without a tripod, my shutter speed is always well over 1/60. Maybe I'm just being overly critical of my work.

I'm not a photographer but I travel often and was wondering if I could take decent shots to archive my adventures?

If so, what cameras would you guys recommend? Nothing too expensive as I'm not wealthy and don't need a target on my back.
>>
I have a Nikon D5100 with a 35mm prime lens. I'm not good with manual settings yet, and was hoping to use it like a point-and-shoot, but I find it often makes my photos look far to light, while my phone seems to capture more accurate results.
What do?
>>
This may be better suited to /G but i'll try in Stupid Q's 1st.

I import 35mm scans & More recently Jpg & RAW to a external hard drive directly from source (Scanner & SD card) to External hard drive, not stopping on the Computers hard disc.

I Do not have regular access to a secure computer I am willing to store photos on.
Therefore I can't set up a regular back-up system to take care of cataloging new material to the contents of an existing disk.

I Keep several different copies of my full archive to prevent against loosing all in a failure. However its getting very hard to keep track of what is already on a TB drive & what isn't due to very sporadic access to either my back-up discs and/or new material to import.

Is there a program, or tool within a existing application that can allow you to drag & drop (or manually enter) a larger group of folders, & When a file from the export source has a match in the import location doesn't stop the copying of folders to ask about keeping both, deleting ignoring etc but will continue to import all new file/data to the external disc ?

So its a simple exercise to have seperate back-up drives take on regular updates of new material without complaining about some files already being present, or having to use software & memory on a 3rd party machine?

That make any sense to anyone?
Thanks in advance
