Just throwing this out there for those who may be interested:
If you're anywhere in the Atlanta, GA, area over the next few months, it's worth your while to head to the High and check out two fantastic photography exhibits which just opened.
The first is Thomas Struth's Nature & Politics, which runs through January 8, 2017. I'll post a few highlights from the catalog for those who aren't familiar with his work.

If you're not familiar with his stuff, these prints are massive. This print, for example, is the size of a wall.

This particular exhibition is all recent photographs. Stylistically, they are typical of other Dusseldorf School artists. The subjects, however, are fairly varied. They are all tied together thematically, but the subjects themselves are from all over the world.

Even if you're not sure about this whole style of photography, it's worth it to see these prints in person. The scale, the attention to detail, and the technical precision are all impressive.

Bonus points for those from Atlanta: The exhibit has two photos that were shot in the city, one from the aquarium and one from Tech.

And, for good measure, a picture of ol' googly eyes himself.
I went to the exhibit on opening night, and I've been back once since then. It's definitely worth a trip if you're in the area or if you're just passing through the city.

The second exhibit which also just opened is Arbus, Avedon, and Winogrand: Photos from the Collection.
Oddly enough, the High has a really strong photography collection. They've invested a ton in acquiring works over the past few years, and they have a lot to show for it. This new exhibit is basically a survey of all they have from Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, and Garry Winogrand. It runs through February 19, 2017.

The Arbus stuff is what you'd expect from her. Lots of deformities, grotesque figures, generally odd crap. It's all instantly recognizable as her work.
>>2953295
The Avedon stuff is nice, but not necessarily his strongest stuff. Whereas the Arbus stuff are shots that you'd immediately recognize as her work, the Avedon stuff is fairly so-so. Nothing blew me away. All good, but not monumental. They fit well within the context of the exhibit, but they probably wouldn't be worth an exhibit on their own.
>>2953296
Finally, the Winogrand stuff is all good. Lots of typical street shots, cultural issues, etc. All what you'd expect from him. I'd say his stuff was probably more interesting than the Avedon stuff, but not quite as striking as the Arbus stuff. Then again, that's just my opinion. If you're a hardcore fan of either, you may really dig their shots in the exhibit.

So, that's it. Two great exhibits with four great photographers going on simultaneously at the same museum. If you're driving through the city or (more likely) you've got a day-long layover at the airport, it's worth a trip.
The rest of the museum usually has some good photos on display apart from this stuff. It's all just rotations from their permanent collection, so you never know what's going to be out on any given day. They've got some Edward Weston and Walker Evans prints on view as of last week. Not worth a trip in and of themselves, but decent to see if you're there.
