RGBL image of Messier 57 taken with an Atik 314l on a 200mm f/5 reflector. The exposure was 5min with each filter so no stacking or anything which is why the image looks like trash. The bright spot in the corner was light from my laptop slipping through an opening in the filter wheel.

This one is definitely my favorite. I feel like in the other shots, it often feels like you included the foreground / silhouette's merely by accident.
If we are going to see the ground, I think you need to purposefully frame it for visual impact.

newfag here
How come you don't get the movement of the stars @ 25secs??? Is it because of the iso level?
>>2946190
Actually That's mostly due to the downsizing of the resolution. If you look very closely you can see some elongating. If you saw it at full resolution it's more more apparent.
The focal length of the lense also has a factor in it to my understanding. The wider angle of the lens, the more forgiving it is with the length of exposure. It's like following a football game with your bare eyes vs following it through binoculars. Much more movement through the field of view.

No problem. I'm pretty new myself. Got my first DSLR Earlier this year, and as a live in Alaska most of the Summer there are no stars so I've only been out a few times. Try using the rule of 500.

Thanks, at this moment I feel like I need to use a high ISO because I'm shooting through the kit lense and it's not the best. I have taken a few shots at lower ISO and they have turned out okay. But the exposure time needed to draw in the light is causing trailing.

NEWFAG WITH A QUESTION:
If you have a built in self-timer, is there any need to buy an intervaleometer for astrophotography? Why/why not and what are the advantages?
>>2948669
-need- No. But they are incredibly helpful, I spent 20 dollars on mine and the benefits are phenomenal. My camera has a limit of only 30 second exposures, With the intervaleometer I can go much higher. Can also set up time lapses and/or multiple exposures without having to touch the camera between.
>>2948807
>20 dollars
I was curious too and looked them up on ebay, I spent nearly that much on the IR remote key ring thingy (got ripped off because it was the Nikon one).
Didn't think they would be that useful (my camera has a intervalometer built in) but they do seem pretty handy. Exposures over 30 sec are a pain with a stopwatch, I get bored/distracted and "over expose".
>>2948923
Good for you. I'm tempted also.
>>2947256
How did you light the foreground so well?
is there a chart available for exposure time? I have a f/2.0 50mm lens and 400 iso film and want to shoot this thang

26 image stack of the Summer Triangle. Deneb, Vega and Altair. This spot wasn't as dark as the others. I was near a dam with a bunch of orange lights that added a haze I didn't notice in the images until I got home.

Not my favourite shot by any means, but most recent.
First attempt at shooting galaxies, figured I'd start with the easiest one. I'm pretty happy with the result but I know there's miles of room for improvement, so send some tips my way.
Pentax 135mm f3.5 shot at ISO 8000, f4
380 x Light Frames
20 x Dark Frames
20 x Bias Frames
Manually tracked
Tips for gaining more detail and less noise? I don't think ISO 8000 was completely necessary so I can reduce that to 6400, do I need more Dark/Bias frames?
