I had a series of 1/50 pans that came out very sharp. I was surprised, considering about 75% of that day's shots were blurry shit at other, faster shutter speeds.
Took about 2000 photos on one D3100 battery, and a bit of video. Mirrorless simply can't compete for this kind of work.

I wish it didn't have such an awful colour cast. If you're going for a low key shot, spend the time to highlight important details you want to bring out with both framing and lighting. As it is, it's just an underexposed shot that could have been taken with a flash.

this is better, still a very slight cast to it though, at least to my eyes
when light painting, set manual white balance to match your light source, I usually go with something between 5500-5800K

Went back through some photos from Super Touring/Group C.
I discounted most of these because I was slightly too far away for my 400mm, even on a crop body, with the haze coming up off the track and the run off. Also the sun was literally straight overhead.
Not really sure how else to edit these apart from trying to reduce some of the glare off the car's bodywork and bring out a bit of colour.
Any CC would be cool.

Don't be butthurt, you got all the advice you could need. You can either buy the nice Pentax telephotos, or you can play around with third party stuff. The 50-500 has awful bokeh at mid ranges where DOF comes into play, and less zoom range means better quality anyways.

Really, it's who you know. I'm not pretending to be the fucking shit, but I've been doing this for a few years, but a friend can pick up a point and shoot and be given a media pass to the national drifting series because he's best mates with the media guy.

Entering a motorsports photo contest, up to 10 photos.
I'm basically decided I'm not going to bother entering the standard "car fills the frame 1/250th 3/4 pan", it's a good shot for coverage but everyone does it.
I'm now trying to decide the breakdown of drivers and actual racetrack action.
There's no specific criteria, it's just images that best capture motorsports.
Will post some later today, was curious if anyone else has entered anything before and has any advice? Part of this is because I enjoy re-editing photos a few months later.
First one, I'm aware it's a little dark.

I hope you're not submitting that. Where's the action? Where's Shedden sticking the pass on the outside on Jordan going down Paddock flat out? Where's Neal punting Chilton off the track? If you're shooting BTCC, this should be happening at least 5 times every race. Or it seems like it should.
Where's the patterns, where's the pleasing compositions? See Jamey Price's instagram, or any other pro motorsports photographers for some inspiration. Where's the sideways light at the crack of dawn as the racers head out for practice sessions?
Where's the victory, the defeat, the pain of it all? Capture the energy, and the feels.
Nothing wrong with well executed pans; there can be good compositions there if the background stretches itself into ribbons of colour. 1/250th is usually not going to be nearly good enough though.
If you're really planning to win, pretend you're submitting the 10 photos that'd be made into an article on Speedhunters or something. You need defining moments, not Gordon Sheddon winking (or wincing, who would really know?) as he puts on his helmet, uncropped and 2 stops underexposed.
Oh who am I kidding, the judges are going to pick the shitty photos anyways :^)

Yeah that's the tough part, I feel like I have lots of "photos" of motorsports, but still haven't taken anything that is my grail shot of motorsports.
Probably a good thing because it keeps me motivated to shoot and never feeling like I've accomplished everything.
Trying to find the winners from before, because I could quite easily see it being an average photo of a big moment, rather than a great photo turning something normal into an iconic image.

What're your colour settings like? Your colours are always very punchy, and I can never seem to replicate it. I don't know if it's because I shoot boring cars, my boring cars are in pacific northwest grey overcast light, or I'm just not messing with tones and saturation as much.

Honestly, I don't touch the colour settings unless I'm doing a specific film style of edit (if I'm bored). I do everything through lightroom but for this competition I'll do the final edits on photoshop, but a normal setting for me is:
>+40 contrast
>highlights no lower than -30 (and not much higher than +10 because this blows out the highlights on the tarmac easily)
>shadows 0 - +20. Anymore looks bad, especially because...
>blacks -30, I like the blacks to really be darker
Everything else is how they come out the camera, I don't do colour correction, in part because I haven't learnt how to do it properly so I'd rather have good photos that are natural than slide the sliders about and occasionally come up with something good, without know how to do it every time. I'll probably look at learning it this winter though!

It might be the highlights and the blacks/whites?
At one point I was crushing the highlights and then realised that it just killed the colours in the image.
Also I try shoot so things are slightly dark, and bring the colours up. Shooting everything too light and then crushing it seems to look worse, IMO.
Obviously that leads to shots like the driver one, where its just too dark (cloudy + inside) but in general I can do more with something slightly underexposed, than overexposed.

Tell us more about your experience from a photographer's perspective. I see you're in the UK, so I'm guessing rain gear's standard. What provisions did you make for mud and dirt? How did you decide where to position yourself along the route? How often are you relocating yourself along the stage?
How do you get such bold colours on the car, but pull the exposure on the background like that? Or is it just what the English (or Welsh) countryside looks like normally (lel)?

Rain covers to start with as it was raining heavy when I arrived, by the time the rallying started the rain had stopped so I ditched them, relied on "weather sealing.
No provisions really, just knew I'd have to bump my ISO in the dark conditions and would be a lot closer in to the action so put my tele on the 5diii, rather than the noise-fest 7dii.
Position-wise, just got there early as fuck and walked through the forest. The maps they provided were clearly aimed at keeping people in a few areas so I just scouted a lot before anything happened and talked to a few people. Knowing what I know next year it'll be easier.
For the first stage run I was inside/outside a hairpin bend with height change so had lots of different angles, and for the second run through I just followed the stage along, >>2964077 was the furthest I went from the hairpin (about 1.5k) and basically perpendicular to the car.
Colours-wise, I just try keep the highlights as high as possible without too much reflection off the car, as its autumn and it was cloudy it wasn't too bright so this is a little easier.
TBF, rallying is dying in the UK. A friend went to the WRC and said (at least where he was - as an occasional co-driver and a local to the stages he knew better places) that people were mostly being hemed in to pre-set up spectator areas. Rallying here has had a bunch of spectators killed recently.

I don't know if WRC drivers would even want to drive RX cars/unrestricted WRC cars on rally stages. That's as close to Group B as there ever is. Maybe throw in the active diffs from 2004 too.
