Saw a click bait article on this in my local paper. The jornalist misread other click baits.
>the moon will be black
>stargazers wil be treated to...
Bollocks, it's just a regular new moon (second one in a calender month). At least with a blue moon you can actually see the moon. Also in Europe the moon is new on 1st October.

You need to find a object that you can focus on what I learned from others in the astrophotography thread that is in archive is to find a light 40 feet away if at night set your lens to auto focus then aim your camera at the light hold the shutter button to let it focus get the light focused to how you like then carefully switch the lens to manual focus try not to move the lens when you have it focused then you should be good my first picture of the Pleiades was pretty bad till I learned to focus on a light 40 feet away.

No, I figured the part on setting my camera to auto focus on the lens however someone else said that about finding a light or doing it in the daytime but I had no luck just aiming at a light the part that was left out was how to focus they told me to zoom the lens in and out that didn't work for me so I said eh I wonder if switching the lens to automatic focus then aim at a light and hold the shutter button till the lens focus then switch lens the manual focus that's worked for me.

I ended up hiking halfway up to the hollywood peak (the trail that starts from the griffith observatory). I didn't go the whole way because it was getting pretty late and I hiked all the way from Los Feliz blvd, so it was gonna be a long way back in near pitch black darkness down in the trail.
Even on a weekday, there was a ton of people at the observatory, and even saw people going up and down to the hollywood peak. Next time I'll just drive up to the observatory and start my hike from there. It's really spooky doing it from the bottom at night.
I didn't manage to get any starry night shots, the light pollution emanating even from north hollywood was pretty nuts.

Hey man, that's a pretty good idea, but sometimes there is no light source around that you can focus on. I would advise setting your lens to manual focus, and using the LCD instead of the viewfinger to focus. This way, you can zoom in on the LCD image until you find a star, and turn your focus ring until that star is focused. Switch to the viewfinder again to frame the picture, and you're golden.
I've been wanting to go out but I need to get off my lazy ass and scout for new locations first.

Do you ever track satellites or the ISS? If so, could you please post examples of the quality/res?
>>2938980
Cameras are meant to be used, kiddo. Don't fret the shutter count. I have never met someone who burned their shutter out, and I'm friends with some heavy shooting commercial photographers.
And if you DO manage to burn it out, it's like $150 to replace it.

I tried zooming in and out with my kit lens I never had any luck trying to find a Star via the LCD screen I'm not sure how long it takes to manual focus on something but I tried for at least 5-10 minutes never was I able to see a star I guess I'll have to try again maybe I need to use the zoom on the camera body I know there is a button that allows you to zoom in to make the image bigger on the LCD.
I need to learn how to focus without a light because I'm planning to take my DSLR out to a future star party I hear it's really dark out there I thought about this last night about how I was gonna focus in the dark with no light.

that's cool, at $200 a month you would be able to save up like 10 grand before your camera ever went out on you.

Maybe but right now my budget is $140ish. A month my house is in foreclosure so I'm trying to help my parents get enough money saved up so if we have to move we at least have a bit of money to pay for rent.
I used to get $400 a month but I cut my pocket money down to $140 to help my parents. If I'll goes well with the house I might get a new lens for Black Friday

Someone explain how to stack images of galaxies and stuff like I don't how many pictures you should take if I did like 10 30 second exposures I still need flat or black images I can't just stack my 10 30 second exposures I've wanted to try but the problem is most of the videos are stacking the milky way.

So I'm a noob with an entry level camera and only a kit lense. But this is my first attempt attempt at stacking about a month ago. I took 20 shots at 10 seconds each, (I really wanted to avoid any trailing) then stacked them using DeepSkyStacker. This is the results.

And this is a regular 30 second exposure of the Andromeda galaxy, (you may notice the stars are blurry due to the trailing) So 30 seconds was clearly too long to prevent a nice clear picture, but too short to gather enough light. So Instead I took multiple pictures of a shorter exposure. As far as how many you wanna take, it depends on the type of gear you have and the subject that you are shooting. Just play it by ear.

for milkyway stacking its mostly for noise reduction.
for deep sky objects like galaxies and stuff its to bring out the details and sharpness and also to reduce noise.
You can stack pictures without darks bias or offset frames but the results are not going to be as good.
I usually tend to take a few darks maybe half of the lights i have.
Heres another try on m33 using deep sky stacker to stack the images. ~25 lights and 14 darks. DSS is good for stacking but it refuses to work with my raw files, it reads them but registers hundreds of thousands stars or none. I have to convert my files to a bit smaller jpegs for it to work properly.
