lel
No.
I visited at least 20 used camera stores throughout Tokyo in november last year, and saw NO GR's at all, and only one broken Konica Hexar.
I have always known the Contax/Yashica compacts were a meme, so I didn't even bother looking for them/registering them mentally if I did see them, but I think there were a few of those to be had.

Yeah, but so do all of the cams in pic related.
And I would bet money that the 38/2.8 in the big waterproof Fuji is sharper than one in the Cuntax.
The GR/GR21 and Hexar AF at least have unique lenses AND features going for them, which is why the cognoscenti have bought them all up.
All the cuntaxes have going for them is T* kekkonings and the incredible artistic legacy of Terry Richardson.

I have two haha. The original and xa2. I have a yashica t3 and olympus stylus 80, or something, but I don't really like autofocus compacts. They're too unreliable for me
My Ricoh GR1 died on me, currently have a mju-I and a Yashica T4 on the mail but I am so sad for the GR1, was soo awesome.
I might grab the GR II but at that price I can think of a Leica X-E or a Sony A7 and some leica glass,

Gunna buy one soon. They go for <$200 on auction sites in Japan pretty often.
pen-f / x100t / grii / x70 / m10
I'm looking for mostly street photo camera.
They all seem to have similar performance.
I would choose pen-f or x100t for simply the viewfinder and how the camera looks but if grii, m10 and x70 can perform better/equally for cheaper price i would get one of them and keep some money to get canon 80d in near future.
I'm really tempted to get sigma but there is no way i can try it out before buying it so that goes to shit.
I rock an LX100. A lot. It's been really good to me. For about a year it was my only camera. Used it mostly for landscapes, architecture and abstract. Works great with off camera flash too due to insane sync speed.
4k video too, although I haven't used that much.
I particularly love the aspect ratio selector. I love trying new ratios.

I'll be purchasing an X100t in two months time as that's when I'm eligible for a decent discount because I work for an authorized Fuji dealer.
Has anyone ever used the wide or telephoto lens conversation things? Do they work well?
>>2935710
fuck fuck fuck. its you again with the gorgeous contax tvs shots. im thinking on getting one, any drawbacks you found? is it small? noisy?
>>2935637
Hellllll yes XA materrace
The XA2 was a much more daily-usable camera but the lens on the XA is so fucking nice.
I still wish someone would make a digital equivalent of the XA. I don't need zoom, I just want a pocket-sized camera with a decently sized sensor, a fast 35mm(ish) lens, and a lens that won't catch on stuff in my pocket. The slide-open on the XA and Stylus Epic was so great.
My old Canon S95 was a good pocketcam, but didn't take as nice of photos. The Canon G7X and G9X are close. The GR II and Nikon Coolpix A were *very* close. But no one has hit the mark yet.
Fuji XM-1 plus the 27 2.8 or other small prime is pretty nice
>>2935891
I feel the same exact way about the xa2. I really did like the xa2. Used it for a solid 3 months and loved all the results. Sometimes the xa rangefinder patch can be a bit annoying to use, but I still enjoy having manual controls. They're both on their own level. The day we get a digital xa, I'll be so happy.
Own one of these bad boys. Fully auto everything except flash and ISO (of which you can only select 100, 200 or 400).
72 exposures per roll thanks to that half frame magic. Exposes perfectly, focus is pretty much always bang on. 35mm equivalent lens, f4.
It's a great little camera, finding them seems to be getting more difficult these days

Lomo LC-A/+
The Russian made ones have the greatest smell. You won't understand unless you had one. The focusing system is a lever with four distances and it's brilliant. Aperture can be manually selected for flash photography (shutter fixes at 1/60), but syncs at all speeds. Mechanical problems can be fixed easily. The 80's slavshit circuitry is nigh immortal and won't give you trouble. Metering system is ridiculously simple but it just werks, and you can even compensate exposure with the ASA/GOST dial. The lens lets you cram a teensy bit more in than a 35mm will let you, but still "points" like a 35mm or 50mm does.
The Chinese made + versions can take up to 1600 ASA film, but at the cost of the flash aperture selection feature.
Not as pocketable as the Olympus XA, but feels much nicer. Don't worry about the exposure, the Lomo will nail it every time. Just focus, frame, and shoot.

Holy shit, I thought that roofline was barrel distortion for a second.
I do want a Hexar AF, but unless one pops up on Gumtree for cheap, I'll keep my sights trained on the Canon 35/2 IS...
Posted this on the gear thread but didn't really get any useful advice, so here goes: I need a sturdy film compact for taking photos at an airsoft field while I'm part of the game. Lens specs are not important. The camera will be subject to humidity, rain, cold weather and rough handling, and also the risk of being shot in the lens. This means I will not be getting a Contax T2 for the part, $50 is around what I consider expendable.
I currently have an ugly plastic Minolta Hi-Matic which is quite decent otherwise, but is too large to haul around, and an Olympus AF-1 which would be perfect if it wasn't that it shoots with flash only. Any ideas on which cameras to consider?
>>2936091
>The camera will be subject to humidity, rain, cold weather and rough handling, and also the risk of being shot in the lens.
got you fäm.
the konica genba kantoku 28, made for construction workers, so it has all of that covered including abusing the shit out of it. can be had for cheap off ebay.
>>2936100
The problem is nobody is selling it in Europe, I can only get them from US or Japan which means shipping will already cost as much as the camera itself, and then there are the customs to consider. I will keep it in mind as the expensive way out, but I'd rather get started with something easier to acquire.
Where to buy a R I C O H G R for cheap in Europe?

Just bought an Olympus XA today thanks to this thread. $90AU not tooo bad. Thanks anons.
Have been keen on a small take everywhere camera but Leica/X100T is out of my price range, was considering an X20 but I thought hey why not more film.
Very keen. I already have some Ilford HP5, what would be some good colour films to try? Complete film noob outside of BKW developing + enlarging from high school.
>>2936119
>what would be some good colour films to try?
try slide film while its still alive.
>>2936122
Wouldn't be the best recommendation for a beginner to film.
Best to cut your teeth on colour negative, and then take the skills you learn to slide
>>2936122
>>2936124
I do really love mounted and projected slides, definitely a nostalgic look for me, surprised to see there's a shop not far from my uni in north Melbourne that processes E6 and sells all the name colour films that I've heard of.
$30 a roll of 36ex Velvia 100 doesn't sound bad, not back ordered either.
Any tips for shooting slide film particularly?
Sorry to hijack the thread
>>2936130
Slide film *must* be exposed correctly. The dynamic range is also much smaller than negative film, so if you're shooting landscapes a sunset or something you better be using a ND filter or you're gonna either blow the highlights or bloc the shadows.
Best thing you can do is just try a roll. Slide film is amazing when done right.
>>2936091
Stylus epic. Its weather proofed. 35mm 2.8 lens, flash can be turned off, reliable AF. Mine has seen some shit.
>>2936119
90au is a little expensive, but it's worth it nontheless. You'll fall in love after you see the first results. Even if you're anticipating them to come out great, they still manage to blow you away. If you don't mind spending the money, Kodak Portra 400 is an excellent color film, along with ektar 100 and cinestill 800. If you're on a budget, Kodak gold or Fujicolor superia x-tra 400 should do just fine.
>>2935633

Thanks heaps anons, think I'll buy a box of Kodak Gold 400, a roll of Velvia 100, a roll or two of portra 160 (winter's ending here and 400 isn't in stock) and some more HP5 unless you can recommend a better bkw film.
>>2935637

>>2936191
Kodak Tri-X is a beautiful b/w film. I, personally, love the contrasty look it gives. I highly recommend trying it out.
>>2935648
I have an xa and an af35ml, honestly I don't enjoy the ml at all, good lens with a wide aperture but the autofocus is so bad
>>2935651
Yeah the t4 is my grail and I'm gonna get one regardless but I saw a comparison between a Nikon l35af and a t4's lens and the Nikon really outperformed it by alot
>>2936202
I've been fawning over my friend's XA2. I want one so bad. How versatile would you say it is? Is it easy to use?
>>2936205
Don't get a t4. They're good, but they're not worth the price they go for. If you're going to invest that money into a compact, you can do much better.
>>2936119
I think Portra 160 is beautiful. Its definitely my favorite right now. Unfortunately I'm in college so I can't afford it very often. I've been decently surprised with some of Fuji's stuff though.
>>2936210
Extremely easy and super versatile. I definitely recommend xa2. They take beautifully sharp pictures, and get the focus correct 99% of the time.
>>2936191
youll love velvia. try to get the 50 asa one if you can, thats the classic velvia we all have seen in landscape shots and such. if you like green and pale (think forests in the mist), try 400h, thats a color film from fuji, its pretty rad.
>>2936210
I have the original xa but I honestly wish It had zone focus sometimes, I doubt you'll be disappointed, the xa series is amazing
>>2936215
Nah, I already have an xa which is plenty for me, I also plan to get a l35af, I know the t4 isn't the best but I'm still gonna get it because i just want to, I mean it's 500 bucks at most and I'm making pretty decent money so I can afford to spoil myself that way
>>2935684
I'd personally go for a Natura Classica instead, but fuck paying 500 bux for a compact when I've already got a rangefinder and slr.
>>2936365
I don't blame you. They are sweet little cameras. I just wish they weren't so god damn overpriced.
>>2936367
Yah, thanks to uncle terry, but honestly everyone I've seen who owns a t4/5 says that it's fucking awesome and it just works so well
I'm still rocking my LX7, and I still like it. It's got a few advantages compared to most other compacts:
24mm (great for landscapes and any kind of wide-angle shots)
1.4 aperture (seriously, this is incredible)
Min. shutter speed for various priority or automatic modes
ND filter
Fits into my jacket pocket
Negative things that do annoy me and make me want to switch:
Small sensor
Only 10 MP - useless if you need to crop
Very slow OS
Still, for 400 bucks (including SD card, automatic lens cap and a bag) it's a great piece of technology with lots of options.
I'm constantly thinking about getting a DSLR, but I know that I'd basically never carry it around with me.
These are my babys, I got the film ones for free from a homie and the Nikon just came in the mail recently; So far I'm love it
there's nothing better than shooting with compacts

Rad, glad to have inspired someone else to get into the XA.
Be aware: at F2.8, there's a fair amount of vignetting.
I like Ektar 100 for shooting in bright outdoors - super fine grained, high saturation/contrast. Kodak Gold/Ultramax 400 is a fine everyday film. I've also had real good luck with Superia 800.
>>2936191
If you're looking for B&W, I love Kodak Tri-X 400 - high contrast, and some really beautiful grain. Try Acros 100 for some super-fine grain B&W.
>>2936165
Great camera, the pinnacle of film point&shoots.
>>2936210
The XA2 is about as easy to use as a non-autofocus camera can be.
>>2936598
If you're looking for a full auto compact digital camera and the protruding lens doesn't bother you then it's fine.
As for how the camera performs. It has a severe lack of buttons and most of what you do is with the touch screen or using the dpad on the back. Focusing speed is appalling and suffers from the old canon liveview delay even when taking images.
The grip is non existant and the white model suffers from being coated with a slippery surface.
The 22mm is a nice enough lens, able to be picked up cheap enough and is to my knowledge the only compact AF 35mm eqv lens.
For timelapse/video, it's great with magic lantern.
All in all if you can get one for under £60-80 with an EF adapter then it's an alright purchase. If you're looking for a compact mirrorless camera that's a joy to use, then there are better alternatives out there.
>>2937452

>>2938716
Obviously not. I just based my post on internet reviews I've read and the odd forum post. Why on earth would you think I've not used one after a post like that?
Of course I've used one. I still own one and owned an M3 Like I said, good camera if you can get one really, really cheap. If you're not spending all your evenings in the soup kitchen then there are better alternatives out there for everything except a compact AF 35mm eqv.

>>2938978

>>2938982

Depending on the country you're in, it won't matter.
Charity shops in some countries have to base their prices based on the internet. This means that every single fucking blogpost, every article, every video and every flickr/apug thread about why X camera is amazing brings up the price even at the bottom line.
All it takes to raise the price of a camera is hype and higher priced listings. Once the hype kicks in, people will by literal shit. Once it's in demand you start to make bank.
If you really want to go at it hard when raising the price, buy up every single version of it you can find and list them all at your guide price. This is how "retro" videogames raised in price over the years.
>>2935637

>>2939305
Damn dude, nice buy. The XA3 is a sweet one. Bringing a film camera anywhere you go, and a good one at that, does feel great. I recently fell in love with Tri-X when I got back my first developed roll. It's such a great bw film
>>2937172
Apparently you can stretch their lifetime a lot by keeping the camera in the dark. I have one which came in an original leather pouch (leading me to believe it was kept in that pouch primarily by the previous owner) and it still meters for correct exposure, even though it was built in 1972.
>>2939499
True, but why do you have it developed for you? B/W development is easy to do yourself and often superior to having it developed (as there are many different film types and thus development times, and not all labs take care to do this specifically for every roll, although tri-x might be ok because it's so widely used). Home developing b/w is easy and fun to do.
These are my compacts. The Trip35 is my favourite, although the Agfa Rapid 250V is nice too, but a pain to use because of the Rapid canisters. I don't use the MF ones a lot, because they don't really have any setting, so I think it's a bit of a waste of MF film.

Trust me man, I've wanted to get into developing but I just simply haven't the time. Is there a barebones starting kit or something I can buy? I've yet to look into it at all
>>2939500
That's probably right, but you definitely got lucky. The trip 35s were used by everyone and their mother. I'd be very surprised to find one that had been taken care of well and in nice condition
Friend of mine let me borrow his Rollei 35, pretty great camera it had great build quality, nice size, great optics, not a fan of scale focus though

Yeah I've seen them around, they mostly include developer, fixer and a developing tank. If you're looking for barebones, this is all you'll need, apart from some standard things like measuring cups, a funnel, some empty bottles and perhaps a thermometer. You can use your phone as a timer.
Look up the developing times and solutions (google "massive dev chart") and you're good to go. You will need a dark room for loading up the film, but it literally only needs to be a very dark room, with no light coming into it whatsoever. This can be achieved easily in a room without windows (just put some towels in the door crease and work after sundown for extra darkness). If not possible at all, you could use a changing bag.
http://www.instructables.com/id/Developing-Black-and-White-Film-at-Home/?ALLSTEPS
This is quite a decent tutorial, albeit a bit childish, but you can start with step 3.
Basically you put the film in the development tank (in darkness! after you firmly close the tank, you can put on the light), pour in the developer at ca 20°C wait for the prescribed period of time whilst agitating periodically, pour it out, pour in the stop bath (water can be used too), agitate 1 minute, pour out, pour in fixer, agitate periodically and pour out after 10min (you can reuse the fixer but not the developer). Put a funnel into the tank hole, let water from a running tap flow in and wait 10-15min. Open the tank, put in a drop of dishwashing soap and swirl for a bit. Now you can take the film out of the loading spiral and admire your work. Wipe off excess water and hang to dry in bathroom (less dust) with a small weight at the bottom to straighten out (clothes pin). Careful, don't touch the negatives. After they dry, you can archive them/scan them w/e.

Nice! XA3s are hard to find; sweet little honey of a camera.
>>2938981
Don't worry brah, $90AU is a fine price for an XA in good condition. Don't worry about the flash though, it's pretty useless - my A11 flash has been sitting on a shelf gathering dust since 2004. The only reason to buy one is if you're a collector and gotta have all the accessories.
>>2939683
I think my bathroom would be a good candidate. No windows or anything. Next time I go to my local camera shop this weekend I'll see if they have this kit you're talking about, which I'm sure they will. Thanks for the great info, by the way.
>>2939705
The time I'll be taking most photos with it is after uni in the CBD, a lot of my classes finish at 6:30PM so I'd be wanderin around at 7/8. Keen to sell it? ;)
I suppose in the meantime i could push the film and narrow the aperture in daytime
I have an Oly Mju2. Would it be worth it to buy a used X100/s? The lenses are much alike (both equal 35mm on full frame), and DOF is much the same (mjuii is f2.8, X100 is f3 equivalent).
>>2939792
well, you will get better dynamic range for starter.
get x100s at least. x100 is crap.
>>2939811
I don't really care about dynamic range on such a camera that I would only use for travel and social photos. What are some other reasons why I should get one?
And why X100s over X100? I understand its faster at af, but if I'm already used to the af of the mju2, then shouldn't the X100 af suffice?
>>2939710
No problem. It's how I started, just the bare minimum. It quickly escalated into a full darkroom setup though, so be warned.
Still, all you really need is a tank, developer and fixer. The rest is optional. Even if ready made sets aren't available, you can just order the tank and the two bottles of chemicals separately.
just got a mju-ii for 40€, I am happy /p/
my compact is the Fujifilm x70 and i've had it for maybe 9 months.
I really love it. Although i probably spent too much on it as i bought it when it first came out.
Pretty light and i can actually slip it into my pocket if im wearing one of my jeans.
The colours are nice and ISO performance is great too. Seems to be sharpest at its lowest of 2.8. Its definitely softer at f8 and higher.
Lightroom sucks at processing its raws so i use the fujifilm software to take it to jpeg instead.
good manual controls
good battery life
film simulations are kinda cool
8.9/10, definitely worth it if the price has dropped (i got for 1000 AUD) and you also want wider then 35mm.

Since we're speaking about digital compacts, what do you guys think about the fuji x10?Does anyone own one? Is it worth getting the x20 or will the x10 suffice?
>>2939837
Congrats, now load it up and go snap some shit!
I just bought a Leica Q.
I know, I'm a cunt.
I've wanted a fixed lens, full frame compact for a while. An RX1R ii was my default option. I dismissed the Leica as luxury bullshit.
The only thing I don't like about it is the high ISO performance. It could be better.
I love everything else. It's a spectacular camera and such a pleasure to shoot with. The upshot of that is that I have actually been shooting, for fun, since I bought it. Which has become extremely rare in recent years, when I'm not travelling at least.
It was expensive, but actually cheaper new than the RX1R ii is here in the UK. And I paid a 20% deposit and am paying the rest over 2 years which is quite manageable. And it makes me very happy. It is a delight.
I've had every version of the x100, LX3/5/7 and now currently use a GR II for this role. Not a single regret. Sharper than the x70, and I shoot RAW so I don't need or miss the Fuji jpegs although they are nice. It is on me every single day in my front pocket, so it is more useful to me than the x100t at home. Shit, if I can't pocket the GR, the next thing I grab is my Sony Rx1 anyways.
>>2940283
Shit, I would get it if I could, people only really hate it because it's popular to hate Leica but it seems like a great camera
>>2940283
Why didn't you just buy an xpro2? It's a superior camera in every way except
>fool frame meme
then you could be just like that trap you doxxed
>>2940283

>>2940283
The Leica Q is a QT. I would get one if I could.
>>2940002
yeah the gr seems to be the perfect size. im pretty sure its thinner then the x70 but longer so it has a good grip to it.
the x70 definitely feels tiny but i guess im used to it now. When i first got it i would always use two hands to hold it because i was scared to drop it lol.
>>2940378
love my gr. i loaned it to mom for a trip to europe. miss my baby. its sharper than x70 wide open which is kinda nice but x70 excels elsewhere

Yeah, I mean I just want a gr because it's tried and true, but the x70 is really appealing too and I love the size, I was actually blown away when I saw it irl for the first time because it was the size of some cheap power shot cameras
There's someone selling a Canon AF35ML in my area, i'm tempted alot to buy it. Would it be a good deal and a nice camera to shoot with film?

Full frame is aesthetically different. I prefer full frame. Preferring crop is fine too.
X-Pro 2 looks fine, but I wanted full frame.
I also prefer the amazing EVF, autofocus, and general speed, precision and responsiveness from the. (Dem Leica aesthetics are fine too. It's gorgeous).

I sold my GR on the weekend. $550 Ausbux. I've had it for bang on 3 years, paid $770 brand new. It was a beautiful camera, almost certainly the best digital camera available under 500 grams, in terms of IQ and handling.
I think $73 dollars per year to use such a based camera is good value, no?
I just shoot too much film now to justify owning expensive, depreciating digital cams.

It's like everything m8.
As sufficiency for purpose percolates down through every level of imaging device, coming down to the reality that your mobile telephone now delivers technical image quality sufficient for all but fine art, magazine editorial and scientific purposes, people no longer seek higher performance, but instead differentiation.
Every basic bitch can take a sharp, well exposed digital photo at any time of the day or night now.
If you care about your photos and want them to stand out from your peers, use the artists' medium.

So it's me again /p/eople,
>bought an XA
It's late and I cbf so here's what I sent the guy who sold me the camera.
"The camera arrived this morning. The exposure/shutter speed meter is not functioning correctly, were you aware of this? I looked it up and apparently there is a seperate meter for the needle and the shutter itself, and the shutter timing appears to still be accurate so this isn't a deal breaker, just unfortunate.
Also the rangefinder patch is extremely dim, this may be the case on all XA's though, I haven't looked through any others.
Have you ever experienced any light leaks? I'm hesitant to put a roll through it with all of the foam disintegrated as it is, which wouldn't be too much of a hassle to replace if it wouldn't set me back a further $25 just to have the foam sent to me."
Theres also a golden spot on the lens which concerns me (could it spread?), and it didn't even come with an A11
>had kodak 400 all ready to go
>one of the first nice days in months
>get out of uni early
>even bought new batteries

Oh shit I forgot to mention the case opens like dirt too.
I'm sad /p/, tell me it'll all be okay.

I purchased an XA for cheap and got it to working (usable not perfect) condition pretty easily.
Are you out of the US? I got new light seals for $12 w/ free shipping from Ebay and they work perfectly. Based on your image I would definitely replace the seals, I did experience light leaks before replacing mine.
For the dim RF look at this manual (around page 34) or elsewhere online to get to the RF mechanism. I was able to clean mine of dust and some grime which helped. Also put a small piece of black electrical tape in the center of the viewfinder where the RF patch is projected. This will greatly increase the contrast and allow you to focus using the edges of the patch.
http://benoit.suaudeau.perso.neuf.fr/manuels_rep/telemetrique/OlympusXA.pdf
>>2941405
Yea mate, not in the US.
I was planning on putting a red or purple sharpie dot on the viewfinder.
Not sure i want to get in there and clean any internal surfaces, i've heard horror stories. The RF patch did look pretty grimey though...
Thanks for the service manual link though, sick of having to go through so much extra effort to get everything I buy ever to work, don't know what it is with me. Not just photog gear or second hand shit either.
>>2941417
Also does anyone think the A9M is worth getting? I can't find an A11 or A16 for less than $50 au which is crazy, and I am out at dusk and indoors a lot.
>>2941405
Holy fuck those exploded parts diagrams give me such an autistic boner
>>2941405
How important are the light seals? The ones in my XA turned to dust; I brushed it all out. Given the shape of the case & back plate I figure the seals are just additional security from the lucky ray that manages to bounce itself around all the corners.
>>2942650
uh, very. They do what they imply, they seal the camera from light. So without them you'll get random streaks on your film most likely. If you're really unlucky, you'll ruin the film in there.
Not worth rolling the dice on for something that can be fixed for like $10 and an hour of your time
