Just pulled my darkroom out of storage and began setting it up.
The enlarger is an Andreas Veigel Exact 45c built in Stuttgart

Jesus Christ that looks like a fucking unit.
I don't have picture of my actual set up but it's cheaply rigged up but I don't mind the results and it's impossible to find equipment out here. I'm using a vivatar e34 for 35mm and 6x6, always use Ilford chem for dev and fix, rapid fixer and pq dev (I think that's what it's called) and an old used set of contrast filters that I have to handhold over the lens because the mount broke and they're the circular ones not the square insert style (ala Ilford multigrade). I do have a question though, the e34 didn't come with the 6x6 carriers and I've tried making some and they don't preform as well as I'd like, what's the best subsitute for carriers or is there anybody (long shot) that has used a e34 or any E vivatar enlarger that has a solution? Supposedly Holga rebranded this enlarger not long ago and there were replacement carriers sold new but they're no were to be found now. Oh and also what's a good 75mm lens for 6x6, and what easels do people use when you're printing larger then 8x10?? And sorry about the image size it's straight off Instagram chat no clue its size.

how did you try to make them? what materials etc did you use and what were the issues you ran into?
>>2933946
I used a material similar to mat board. Honestly I haven't used them much because they're a pain in the ass to use, aligning and what not. Would just be nice if I could use another set of carriers with this enlarger.
>>2933960
why not just buy an extra 35mm neg carrier that fits ur enlarger & bring it to a metal shop to expand the hole to fit 6x6 shit?
>>2933938
liquid, mostly ilford MG dev, I find powder like d76 is a pain to mix
>>2933941
i have seen people make good carriers out of matte board, its easy and cheap to cut, basically cardboard. there a ton of good lenses out there, mine are mostly old schneider, nikkor, and rodenstock singe coated lenses which work just fine for B&W. A good 2 blade easel is the way to go so that way it doesn't matter if your film format doesn't match your paper size.
>>2933960
perhaps try a thicker sheet of aluminum, I have made some lens boards for my crown graphic from it and it files easily. just make sure all the burrs are off so it doesn't scratch your film.
>>2933944
its a 4x5 condenser with a glass carrier, 120 and 35 fit in it quite well too.

That's my situation right now is finding even another 35mm carrier that fits.
I use a Beseler 23Cii with a Nikon 50/2.8N for 35mm and a Nikon 105/5.6 for 6x7. So far. I've been nothing but happy with the lenses and the enlarger. I pretty much only make RC prints right now but I plan on giving fiber a try soon too.
Do any of you guys print bigger than 11x14? My enlarger has the ability to project onto the wall for larger prints, but the prospect is somewhat daunting.

Im the E34 dude in the thread and it can also project onto walls. I haven't but I met a guy who said he would make large prints by projecting onto the floor and actually paint the chem onto the paper. He just put polly down on the floor and used a roller paint brush, he had a cool set up wish I took pictures. Can't wait to be able to print 11x11 enlargements of my 6x6 negs.
I always need to wait till it's dark enough because my bathroom's rooflight is really hard to get light sealed

Mamiya 645 and a Konica IIIa
Been ages since I was in a darkroom. A bit nostalgic for it, I must say.
My older brother had a decent darkroom that I used when I was a kid.
The enlarger was a Durst M600. Decent enough, but not great. The real tragedy, though, was the lens: an off-brand plastic piece of crap that was horribly unsharp. As a kid, I didn't know any better at the time, but always wondered why my prints weren't crisp. When I got to college, the darkroom there had a good enlarger with a Nikon lens. A whole world of difference!
Newbie here -- just got me a Leitz Focomat V35 + the Focotar 40mm AF lens. No backing down now, lads! Is this awesome y/n?
Any tips you old coots wouldn't mind giving, off the tops of your dome-pieces?
>>2934222
>he prints 5x7's too
nice set up, I have the exact same easel. Have you ever tried printing larger negs with that 80? I have a 105 for 6x7 but I'm curious if an 80 can really cover it, cus I'd like to be able to get a bit more size out of my projection for cropping.
>>2935567
The largest negs I have printed with the 80mm were 6x6, but the brochure expilicitly states that it is suitable for enlarging 6x7 (95mm diagonal) so I wouldn't worry about it.
>>2935500
anything in particular giving you trouble?
general tip, get familiar with contrast filters
>>2936513
Not really, no. It was a bit of a hurdle to comprehend how the enlarger maintains optimum focus automagically (it's a mechanical linkage rather than an active motor-driven thing as on a camera), but now I'm good. But yeah, I'll give the vario-contrast module a shot right after I'm done unscrewing the shelves in my washroom for more headspace...
For the time being I'm totally smitten with zomg I made paper photos! It's like I'm a kid, putting a brush to paper for the first time. Results likely look about the same as well.
I have a pretty complete darkroom setup, but nowhere to set it up. There isn't a single room in my house without windows, and the few that could be "sealed" are far from running water. I'll be specifically looking for a 2 bath place next time I move.

How do you guys feel about those canisters that you just dump the chemicals into?
>>2938396
I feel like you asked this question poorly before.
>>2938503
I simply asked in the film thread whether it was worth doing or not vs a darkroom or paying someone else to do.
There really isn't much to ask.
>>2938508
A canister is a very different item from a processing tank. There's a reason no-one answered you.
It was also because you didn't say what type of processing you need to do or the prices in your area. I can get dev and scan for for less than $3 where I live.
Phrase the question properly giving as much detail as you can and maybe someone will answer you.
>>2938509
Ah sorry.
It's like $5~ for 35mm in color, and scaling shit prices for scans.
http://www.pfsphoto.com/assets/PFS%20price%20sheet.pdf
Yea this shit sucks
>>2938508
I find if you have a local place to do colour film it is seldom cost beneficial to do it yourself. In my case though, the price of a C41 kit is less than shipping to my closest lab.
B&W can be done at home for pennies a roll if you use certain developers and reuse your fix bath.
>>2940336
There is literally no more detail to be given other than the film. Fuji 200/400.
I even gave you the prices of a local lab.
Those canisters tend to go for $30 and C41 seems to as well.

6 years ago I used to work at a camera store and darkroom interest was at an all time low. A customer gave me the feeder with 2 modules set up for for RA4, then someone else gave me the 3rd module so I could run it for B&W.
It only works for RC prints and I was doing fibre for a while and forgot about the machine. just dug it out of storage and fired it up and it works better than I hoped.

Pretty sure most people have better coordination keeping their eyes open even if it's pitch black.
>>2943282
Mad jelly.
I'd love to try RA-4 printing, but not without a processor.
Since it started getting darker outside I dug out my enlarger and made some prints this week.
Not enough space to set up the enlarger that does 4x5, so I shot some 6x6 to print on my smaller Meopta.
>>2948163
I spoke with Antonio today. All the prints you guys do at the shop are RA-4 process??? I might get some drumscanned pictures printed on the machine. Is it any good?
t. fuji 690 fag
>>2948174
Yeah.
I think the prints are gorgeous, as long as you go with matte paper, I hate the glossy ones.
He only prints up to 30 x 45cm I think tho.
>>2948179
Cool.
30x40 is a nice size. I hope the negs I'm getting developed turn out good. I'm using my phone as a lightmeter and I don't really trust it haha.
I might also be buying back the 8x10 Wista. The guy who bought it hasn't picked it up yet. That seems weird to me.
How do you learn how to darkroom?
best web resource?
>>2948190
What exactly do you need to learn?
>>2948190
film Scanning/Editing mostly
your setup looks very nice, how much money do you think you've put into it
>>2948190
if you have the space and resources to get an enlarger, timer, redlight, contrast filters, trays and some tongs, just starting is the best way. if you don't have the space, ect. taking a course at a community college might be the way to go.
you can often get complete beginners darkrooms cheap that will have everything you need to go
>>2943122
Just saw this.
Yeah, I actually got it for literally nothing, the whole setup belonged to my aunt, who was a decently successful art photographer and sadly passed away around 10 years ago. The stuff was supposed to go to her own kids, but neither of them ever took any of it, and when my uncle finally decided to sell the house earlier this year he offered it to me.
What kind of paper do you guys use for b/w printing? I have gotten decent results on Fomatone barite paper, but I recently have some more funds available, so I'm looking for a better paper for my best prints which I frame with a beveled framing mat.
>>2948185
>>2948179
I mostly do 24x30, but I'd like 30x40 more. I use the smallest (10x15 I believe it is) as a cheap way to print and distribute photos to people who ask for them, like friends and family. They also fit into albums better.
>>2946248
Yeah somehow it makes my coordination for finding the developing tank, film canister and scissors better. Might be some sort of placebo effect though.
>>2950591
I usually use Ilford because it is easily available here, I don't have experience with Foma but friends tell me that the Ilford provides better blacks. It may have a higher silver content.
I really miss the Agfa B&W papers, though their QC was a little hit and miss, they had the deepest blacks available.
I am guessing your measurements are in CM because 30x40in is huge and expensive.
>>2950639
Thanks. What kind of Ilford do you use? There are many kinds available at the webshop I usually get my darkroom supplies. I figured a box of 50 sheets runs between 80 and 120 € so the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive paper is not that great, so I might as well splurge on the premium stuff. What would you recon is the best paper available?
And yes, I use cm's. The largest regular size available is 50x60 (ca 20x24") and it's indeed quite expensive. Plus, I'd need to scale up my entire process with larger trays, enlarger etc so I don't think it's worthwhile, certainly seeing I don't use LF negatives (largest are 6x4,5 MF) so they wouldn't really be sharp anyways.
>>2950805
Fibre based papers a certainly the best however if you haven't been printing on fibre, it is a whole world of hurt getting them washed properly and avoiding fixer burn. If you are used to it great!
I think like most people I usually print RC, however finish is and tone is really personal preference. I quite like MGIV glossy brilliant, I picked up some MGRC cooltone that I am not a fan of, every time I print people with it they look like they are in American Appeal ads. However industrial landscapes look quite nice with it.
>>2951020
Thanks for your advice! I've been avoiding fixer burn by just fixing for 2 minutes and rinsing very thoroughly for over 20 minutes. MG IV is a good paper I think, I'm leaning towards that paper, so I think I'm buying a 50 pack of that. If anyone has anymore advice on paper choice I'd be happy to read it, but as of noe I think I'll go for MG IV
