Thoughts?
I have a chance to get one relatively cheap.
Should I invest?
I'm in search for an everyday camera with just one lens, not to heavy and big to carry around and I love film.
>>2930354
why not a compact film camera with fixed and retractable lens?
>>2930357
I'm a fan of fixed focal length.
>>2930363
they come in fixed focal lengths too
>>2930366
You mean something like a "Konica Big Mini"?
>>2930370
sure, great range of quality, up to something nice like a contax t2. rollei 35 aren't known as compact point and shoots, but they're also small and fixed focal length, lens is retractable
How much is "relatively cheap"? Those usually do not sell much above 250eur/$280. Keep in mind that it's sometimes claimed it doesn't work with all M-lenses. Came with 40mm and 90mm, whereas 90mm might be harder to focus considering the rather short rangefinder base.
Need the light meter? If so I'd recommend going for M5. M6 and above are still quite expensive and might be out of the budget?
Lightmeters in all cameras mentioned above might fail eventually.
Considered CV Bessa series? All come with a lightmeter, almost same rangefinder base as the CL/CLE, A-series offer aperture priority, viewfinder is about as bright as in the M.
>>2930357
Because mostly premium compacts offer the option to change shutter speed or aperture and oftentimes sell for more than a CL.
>>2930380
Do Rollei 35 have a rangefinder?
>>2930410
350€.
I only need the 40mm, nothing more.
Yes, the lightmeter is very important. I heard the have problems sometimes.
Would love to invest in a M6 but too expensive right now, maybe some times later.
Looked for the "CV Bessa" but nothing found yet. What price range are they? Maybe at a camera bourse.
>>2930410
No, no rangefinder on the Rollei 35, otherwise it would be perfect.
>>2930458
paid ~250 for my Bessa R, but then the 40mm does not fit the R, but only those with M-bajonett, R2 and after. Check for Voigtländer Bessa R, the CV is for "Cosina Voigtländer" as Cosina just bought the name and it's not the original Voigtländer anymore.
Lightmeter in CL and M5 are not going to work forever and at M6 the circuit board can stop working, making it an M4-P with additional room to keep a battery if you ever need one for your watch.
Can you test the CL before you buy it? If so I recommend to just handle it for half an hour, check if it works for you and then decide. If the 350eur are incl. 40mm, the finder is good, the rangefinder is working properly and the shutter is working at all times + you like its handling, then I see no reason not to go for it.

True, those are cute little cameras. One of the Werra (Zeiss GDR) series has a rangefinder and those are all well designed and also very small. Still repairing mine..
>Thoughts?
I owned one briefly as a second body to my M3. I know the CL has it's following but I am not a fan, I found the camera to be bulkier than it looks and awkward in the hand.
Much more partial to a nice screw mount with a collapsible Cron as a compact everyday camera.

I can't deal with the different viewfinders for composing and focussing on the barnacks and barnack copies.
>>2930530
fair, the things that 1 person doesn't like about 1 camera could be the things that attract someone else to that camera.
a few last points on the CL.
The meters are often broken and can only be repaired (if at all) with used parts. Also the Minolta is the same camera, so unless you are a collector and need the Leica name, if you can find one cheaper, go for it.
>>2930410
>Those usually do not sell much above 250eur/$280
Bullshit, I see them breaking $400 all the time on ebay.
>>2930354
how is it an investment? Are you planning on making any money back off it?

No money, just a hobby.
Do all Leicas have that pain in the ass spool for loading film?
>>2933738
M4 and above have no real spool (picture related). Apparently the spool in M2 and M3 can be swapped for something similar.
>>2930458
Why not a Canonet ql17? Decent 40mm 1.7 and aperture priority, but also full mechanical controls and leaf shutter. Less than $100 on eBay.
>>2930354
>everyday camera with just one lens
What's wrong with the Canonet or another similar camera?
I carry a Rollei 35. It's about the very smallest good all-manual 35mm camera.
>>2930460
>no rangefinder on the Rollei 35
Read this anon:
https://tomchuk.com/misc/rf/
make your own rangefinder out of a piece of paper
works quite well enough
Also you could mount an accessory rangefinder to the Rollei 35 and it'd still be smaller than most any other all-manual camera.
The Olympus XA is excellent too, if you don't ***NEED*** all-manual operation, and so is the Contax T series.
Also, there is the elusive and sexy Minolta TC-1...
