I don't see anything wrong with meeting people, I think it's probably a good thing. I wouldn't expect great photography to come from it though. But I prefer to shoot alone so your mileage may vary. What would worry me the most would be incessant gear talk.

But there is no-one else in my area so I'll never find out anyway

I do the same thing with my buddy regularly for fun and this happens to me all the time. It's become infuriating, mostly because he'll stroll into my frame all the time or will get in my way. If it's not that he'll shoot the exact same thing or he'll complain to me that he wanted to shoot something/someone I shot.

I can't imagine how painful it'd be with a group of people doing the same.

You know how a diffused lighting makes photos interesting, heavy overcast can do even moody looks but in Philly lighting is constantly shit. Sharp contrasty shadows, bright highlights, I just couldn't do any decent shots. If only there was overcast sky once in a while...
