Only good one
>>
>>2923267

Lighting from the right (as viewed) could be softer.

>>2923268

Meh.

>>2923269

No.

>>2923271

Interesting 7/10.

>>2923272

No.

>>2923274

This one had some potential but the under lighting is to subtle and not quite right.

>>2923276

That would be a great area to get some more practice on working the light and work on various perspectives.

Not trying to be harsh but keep at it.
>>
>>2923272

digging it a lot. you like it because even when flawed, it has character.

i think the girl fits very well for this type of style. she needs to lose weight if shes going to model like some femme fatale, though. now there is only so much you can do with headshots, did you try shots involving full body?

>>2923283
its very boring.
>>
>>2923291
Curious, what do you mean by under lighting? I wish I had lighting equipment of mine own, I feel like I could've done so much more with a bit more control on the light instead of just some random strip from the ceiling.

Thank you for the feedback though,
I'll definitely be going back at some point.

>>2923296
She's my girlfriend, not trying to be a model or anything, I just happen to use her for practice, but I agree. I tend to avoid full body because even though she's not overweight she's still super sensitive about her figure so I err on the side of caution and leave em out. I guess I should still take the time to learn flattering poses for different body types.
>>
>>2923302

just noticed the expansions. wew lad. i knew there was something off in the noir aesthetic. go with something she can pull off, with those holes in her ears, i think she just aint right for classy 50s stuff. maybe gothic or dark will be more in her alley.

>Curious, what do you mean by under lighting?

Light is coming in from multiple angles in your photos. Some of it is direct light and very bright and some of it is light reflected off surfaces in your surroundings and much more subtle. For example in pic >>2923269 your model has some nice subtle under lighting accentuating her chin line but the direct light is overpowering and distracting. You need to work on balancing your lighting mechanics better.

Things you can do are buy or make your own reflectors and experiment with different materials which increase or decrease the amount of light thrown on the scene.

Pic related is examples of different lighting perspectives.
>>
>>2923312
I wasn't really trying to go for a noir 50s aesthetic at the time, mostly just playing with the contrast from the light but I see what you're saying. If I was doing a more professional shoot I would've matched hair/clothes/makeup with the style but I didn't even think of that at the time.
>>
>>2923315
Ah I see what you're saying, thank you. I'll see about getting a reflector to play around with.
>>
>>2923315
How do I get even hair rim like 3rd pic?
I always tend to get it uneven, like way more pronounced on bottom or top depending on light placement.
Is any modifier or placement particularly suitable?
>>
>>2923323

A lot of it is going to be trial and error.

Sometimes you need to adjust the model, sometimes you need to adjust the lighting, sometimes the photographer needs to adjust his potion and the cameras perspective.

Use reflectors (even homemade ones) to redirect light into or out of the scene as needed and take lots of photos -- experiment! You can get collapsible reflectors for $10 online or make your own out of different materials -- sheets, aluminum foil, poster board -- and of different colors too.

The great thing is you will learn as you go and maybe even come out of it with some kick ass shots.

These are my two favorites. I like the us of dramatic lighting. I need find a better natural spot to do that around my area, or recreate it with my speedlights.

I will be posting some of my latest portraits...

picture is horrible. but she seems like a nice subject.
>>
>>2924789

Yeah she's cool.

Any reasoning behind your opinion?
>>
>>2924738
You'll never do editorial work. You do have a bog standard dream though.
>>
>>2924800
Not that anon, but here are a few random thoughts behind why it's shit:

She's doing nothing. It's a shit pose. Fuck, it's not even posed. It's just a snapshit "hey becky look over here [snap]." There's nothing to it behind just hitting the shutter randomly.

The hair is sloppy and covering her face.
>b-b-b-but it was windy! she was on a boat!
So? Her hair is sloppy and covering her face. It's not some sexy, alluring hair thing. It just looks like exactly what it is: some random chick with her everyday frizzy hair being blown in her face. There's nothing purposeful or effective about it.

Her facial expression reads: "meh."

The processing is dull and fuck and boring.
>b-b-but it was cold!
>b-b-but it was cloudy!
>b-b-b-but muh moody setting!
>b-b-but mug faded look!
The processing doesn't give off anything of that sort. It's just dull and grey. Note what I'm not saying: I'm not saying that the scene wasn't grey. I'm not saying that the day wasn't dreary. I'm not saying that the photo needs to be bright and shiny. It's just bleh.

>Yeah she's cool.
Here's the problem with this photo: You are fond of her. Maybe she's your GF. Maybe's just a good friend. I don't know, and it doesn't really matter. The problem is that she's cool to you, so you're reading whatever feelings you have about her into your photo. For somebody who doesn't know her, looking at this photo evokes nothing. All an anon will see is a dreary photo of some random chick who is doing nothing who is standing nowhere and who is mostly covered up by dark hair.

When you're shooting friends, especially girls you like (even as a friend), you've got to work at detaching yourself completely from the subject. That doesn't mean that the subject doesn't matter. Quite the opposite. Subject is king. However, in situations like this, knowing the subject can blind you to the quality of the photo.

I honestly can't think of a single redeeming quality of this photo. I can't even figure out why you'd post it.

Honestly, I'm curious (a) what you were trying to accomplish with this, and (b) how you think you accomplished it.
>>

Jeez all this rancor over a crappy photo, relax.
I wasn't trying to accomplish anything tbf, I was just surprised that an image can barely be seen at all considering the conditions (light, skill etc). But hey, critique is critique and I accept it.

Two sentences = rancor? Son, you need to get some thicker skin if you want to ask for critique on /p/. That photo is fucking embarrassing. You're a fucking retard if think there's anything about it that isn't complete shit. It's just an underexposed shot of fucking nothing.
>I wasn't trying to accomplish anything tbf
Then why the fuck did you even take it? You can put a camera in the hand of a fucking aids infected money and they'll accidentally snap some poorly-composed, subjectless, underexposed snapshits. The benefit to the monkey, though? Those won't post their garbage on /p/.

Here's real, honest critique: Don't do a single thing you did with that photo. Next time you want to take a photo, think through every decision you made and don't do it.

Is that more helpful, cuntwad?

You have color casts in your highlights and in your shadows.

I'm not saying that colors have to always be 100% true to real life. There's always room for stylization. But here, the strong color casts end up dulling the picture because they rob the picture of much needed contrast. You can still get that faded, trendy, whatever look while still having contrast. Without it, a picture will just look flat.

Also, like another anon said, her skin is kinda sickly looking.

Some individual color channel curve adjustments in the shadows and the highlights would really help. Here's a possible way to approach it.

So I'm struggling with really blacking out backgrounds. I don't know if I just don't have enough space in my apartment for the light to fall off or if I'm making a mistake somewhere else. I took this picture last night with no other lights on in the room. I was using a continuous light (Amaran AL-HR672W) through an umbrella with as much space as possible between the subject and the back wall and as little space as possible between the light source and the subject.

Does anyone have any recommendations on changes I could make or does my apartment just not have enough space? Thanks in advance.

Honestly, that's a huge issue. If you can't separate your subject from their background, it's going to be hard.

You say you're as far away as possible, but how far is that? Do you have 1 foot to the background? Do you have 10 feet? That would help tremendously in diagnosing the problem.

Listen.

I know you love this photo. You've said you love it. You've posted it at least three times now. But it's time to move on.

It's not that great, and we don't need to see it every week. The setting is fine. I'm glad it's straight. The light isn't that bad, though it's a bit harsh. She looks bored and frumpy. It's not very flattering. Hell, it wasn't even the most flattering shot in that series.

You've got to get over your emotional bond to photos. You're not at some pro level yet where this defines your style or your skill. If you keep going, you won't give two fucks about this in a year. If you keep obsessing over this shit and posting it again and again, though, then you're going to remain stuck. You've got to be able to take a photo, assess it, and then move on.

Question

How did the model has cyan only on her and not the surrounding area? was it a grid? does the strobe has an upper direction? was it removed in post?

Thanks
>>
>>2931551
I think you're right, a grid helps contain light with minimal fall off.

Looks like the strobe is placed to the left and angled up towards her (look at how the shadows are cast) and what appears to be a car tail light as a hair light, which could just be another strobe, with a car in the background to make it seem like the tail light is the secondary light.

You're thinking too big. This light is fairly sharp with falloff near her head and her legs. This is an off camera flash with a gel on it. That car is farther away than it appears so it barely caught a glimpse on the bumper.

Your biggest issues is these look like you just clicked "greyscale" and didn't bother editing anything further. You can't do black and white and still be a pussy.

Second, you either really fucked up exporting these or you need to learn to take in focus shots.

Third, that girl looks like her favorite show is either catdog or jimmy neutron and doesn't bother with female hygiene

>>2923267
This is dumb because if you're going to do low key photos you have to understand what you're actually taking a photo of. It's a shit portrait because you hid half her face. It's a shit art shot because her eye is small and dim. l2catchlight
>>2923268
Don't ever shoot from below your model unless you're going for an actual effect which at this point is probably beyond you. Same deal as ^, slightly better portrait wise but the whole point of a portrait is eyes which are fucked up again
>>2923269
Best of this set. Still though if you're not going to make a model's eyes look good in an artsy portrait don't bother getting out of bed.
>>2923271
Awkward. Fix it by having her look at the camera or into the light source, stand higher, and don't get so much of her weird shoulders
>>2923272
Do you know how many portrait studios make money off of doing neck shots?
>>2923274
Better than 4. Her nose isn't cut off and less of her torso is shown in that poor angle, so it looks less awkward. Get higher and get a model that doesn't look like she's counting down the seconds until shes done doing you this favor.

Back to basics with you young lad, but at least you're taking photos which is more than the rest of the neckbeards here can claim

>I'm thinking of getting into a retardedly difficult and competitive field to even speak to somebody let alone get the opportunity to even try

You could probably get a couple of bucks back selling your camera on ebay, probably the best thing you can do at this point

You actually appear to want to learn. So, I'll be more polite: read the sticky. Resize your shit before you post.

That being said, these pics aren't bad, but you still to add a little oomph to your editing. You definitely don't need to make drastic changes, since the problem for most people is that they do too much. But your shots are just very bland.

This is a fairly heavy-handed, stylized edit. Just to give you some ideas. I might not go this far for a finished product, but I wanted you to be able to see how some small changes can make a huge difference in the overall appearance of the image.

I'll slightly agree, but that's a product of their posture/shape. The shoe tips are a bit too close, but if you pulled out, then the already-too-much headroom would increase. They are an odd shape for framing. Not bad, but you've just got to give a take a little in a shot like this.

>Now i see and agree i might have gone over the topp for the editing,
The biggest issue I see with the shot is that you've fucked with the black and white points so much. It's fine to want to emulate a vintage film look, but here there's just no dynamic range for the entire shot. Also, you don't have to have perfect colors for every single shot, but, again, the color casts on this are really distracting. Here's an idea of a stylized edit with greater dynamic range. It's still all soft and faded and with screwy colors, but it's less dull and muddled overall. Just an idea.

Well yeah. As I said, I overdo the pictures, Styling is tricky. So I attached a file after a basic retouch and asked to help out with toning.

Whats the best way to ask a girl to model?

I mean, I've actually done it several times before but I want to get into more intimate/indoors portraits. How do you ask to do that stuff without looking like a rapist?

I guess unless the girl is overtly fine with that youre good. Otherwise maybe take her outside for portraits first so she builds trust in you before asking "can i go to your house and take pictures of you in your bed"

how many of you guys fugg your models btw?
>>
>>2935720
I cant get over how ugly she is. You should have asked her to use better make up and not have her hair pulled back and her buck teeth showing
>>
>>2933309
Underrated. She looks fantastic but that chrome thing is really distracting
>>
>>2933309
killer
>>
>>2935914
your model looks interesting but the whole thing is too yellow. also background is too busy for my taste, either learn to photoshop shit out to make it more clean or use less DOF in camera.
>>
>>2933819
you could have edited ot the green and orange thingie from the background along with the pole that is coming out of the left kid's head. otherwise solid composition.
>>
>>2924787
>'what do i do with my hands'
>hair blocking most of face
>top of head cut off
>bullseye composition
>flag lighting
>dreamworksface eyebrows

Looks pretty shitty and doesn't really have any redeeming qualities.

I'd recommend:

>better lighting
Something more dramatic instead of this flat overcast bullshit
>better pose
Anything other than this 'lel where do I put my hands' shit, looks painfully awkward
>keep the hair out of her face
seriously never looks good and has the effect of having a slim girl wear baggy pants and an oversized sweatshirt.

>what are your thoughts?

jesus christ please grow up or leave if you ask for critique.
