If you live in NY, I highly recommend you attend this parade at least once. Yes, there will be at least 2 or 3 moments when the crowds scatter because people hear or think they hear gunshots. If no one is hit, the party and parade are right back on within minutes. Smoke and drink plentiful amounts right on Eastern Parkway. Eat a big turkey leg. It's a blast.

What is this parade? What is it for?
To the untrained eye it looks like Indian Mardi Gras

It makes sense why you would think it looks like Mardi Gras. This parade is a Caribbean adaptation of the Carnival celebrations. So it shares a lot of the same imagery and pageantry.
The parade is held in Brooklyn on Labor Day as a celebration of West Indian/Caribbean heritage. It runs along the major thoroughfare Eastern Parkway.
Sadly, it is known for being marked with violence. It kicks of with a pre-dawn party/procession through the streets known as J'Ouvert which happens around 4AM but draws people from all around into the streets to party from 11PM the night before. Several shootings at this year's J'Ouvert. A couple of times during the daytime parade people thought they heard shots and took off running.
It's a lot of fun though!

Mardi Gras is the only sort of parade I've seen where people really dress up here in Australia. I wish we had more stuff like this.
We pride ourselves on diversity until people want to celebrate it publicly and then the Australian racism flows so this sort of thing would end in violence here too, I imagine

NYC is special when it comes to people celebrating heritage. Doesn't mean the racism isn't here, but people love to show their pride. The Puerto Rican Day Parade - The Dominican Day Parade. Feels like everybody has a special parade.
The violence at this parade is typically the result of drug peddlers or gang members that feel the need to settle disputes in public when they run into one another (ie: shooting and stabbing one another...).
