I took this with my phone today. I have a Nikon D70 I shot with for awhile but outgrew it when i realized phones were starting to take better pictures.
Im thinking about picking up a used D300 since they are pretty cheap now and would work with my F-mount lenses.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Would a D7100 be worth the upgrade in price over a D300 (coming from a D70)?
The D70 really started to let me down as far as its DR was concerned and also its low light abilities, Also the clarity was lacking.
Also anybody want to critique my photo? I wish the sky wasnt blown out and at full size the Clarity is very poor. I also felt I could have used some subject matter (I later found an old childs doll That i found myself wishing was sitting on that stump in the bottom third.)

Even just raising the exposure makes it look a lot better.
Depending on how you feel about doing such, maybe some split toning or playing with the white balance, but the biggest thing is that's shot's underexposed which makes it look drab and sad.

What a load of absolute shit. Stacking and stitching with a 35mm is not the "proper" way to produce astro images. Yes, that's one of MANY ways of doing it, but there is no one single "proper" process. Great astro shots can and have been taken with a single exposure, ya fucking dweebus.

you're a fucking moron, my friend. you don't know anything. literally no great astro shots have been taken as you cannot possible get both the milky way in one exposure nor the correct perspective. you also need above 2000 ISO otherwise you can't get enough light into the sensor without the earth rotating and giving a blurred line effect on each star and if you have 2000+ ISO in one exposure then all of the noise is entirely visible. you cannot see noise if a dozen images are stitched together. you can achieve very mediocre astro shots in one exposure and a very good one requires a good amount of exposures with a focal length between 20 and 50 otherwise you'll start to struggle. using one exposure you also have problems with focus stacking, you need focus stacking depending on the distance of objects in foreground and midground because dof needs to be anything wider than f2 much preferably wide open.

Lovely green/purple color contrast between the sky and trees, and I like how the two groups of trees on each side frames the composition. If I were you I would try to shop out the car. It would also benefit from a more defined silhouette, the left side of your face/shoulder kind of fades into the darkness in front of you. all the visual weight is piled on the left side of the frame (both the dock - the ostensible subject - and the massive trees). theres nothing on the right to counterbalance that, which makes the image unbalanced and introduces a lot of tension - exactly the opposite of the effect youre going for in trying to portray a placid natural scene

Okay I see what you're getting at now. I was mainly focused on getting the clouds in the shot, and I how framed it allowed the clouds to blow in from the right in the way I wanted it. If I was to setup the shot how I originally planned (a bit more natural looking; more balanced) the clouds would've looked very boring.
These timelapses are just a fun thing for me to get me out of the house and shooting, even if that shooting is just setting up my camera on a tripod and press a single button. I typically photograph concerts or do portraiture work.
I truly appreciate your thoughtful feedback/critique on my shot.
