These aren't supposed to compose a concise body of work or anything. They are just my favorite shots from 8 rolls I got back over the weekend. Criticism would be awesome. All shot on a Bronica SQ-A.
I'll start with the Provia shots.

What are the strange blocks on the right half oc the picture there?
Some of the others have clipped black areas. Was the scanner's dynamic range too limited to capture that contrast or is it like that on the originals, too?
>>2914023
Cheers! No clue what those turquoise blocks are to be honest. Perhaps just some building utility access points?
The Provia shots definitely had some unsalvageable shadows. If you're talking about Portra / 800Z shots that's probably due to my editing. I tend to clip the blacks in post to give images a bit more pop.

Eh, this cost me ~$110 in total and was shot over the course of 2 months. Not that expensive when put in that perspective.
Care give some crit?
Cool shots, OP. I've always wanted to filmfag but it's too expensive with my pitiful english gorilla salary and I have yet to find a good deal on a film camera that really appeals to me. If you're ever around Nagoya we should meet up.
>>2914334
I'm in English gorilla too buddy. If you have a digital camera to scan your film with its pretty affordable. Yodobashi will develop 35mm and 120 c41 or e6 for less than 700Â¥ a roll. I'm an hour south of you so I find myself in Nagoya from time to time.

Damn, no feedback at all eh? Scanned the last roll. Bumping with a few more images.
>>2914394
Would you say these are empty scenes in need of a subject or action? Or are these scenes completely missing the mark in even being a precursor to a good photo?

Very nice tones OP. I think I need to try some 6x6 Provia too. The scans are also nice, what's your scanning rig like? A7 but which lenses etc.
I can't offer any worthwhile critique on the shots since it's not really my style, sorry.

This one is nice. Comfy and atmospheric, and kinda has a story to it. The blueness of the lamp lights might be a bit distracting, but nothing one can do about. Possibly consider trying to shoop out the foremost of the left lamps and see if it would calm down the distraction a bit?

I really like this one, or rather, where it is going. But as you said yourself, the film choice and exposure probably was not optimal. .
Maybe also frame the image just a teensy bit more to the left? Would bring in just slightly more of that background mountain scenry as well of the bend in the creek that leads the viewer into the image.
>>2913996
This one has pretty good potential, but something bugs me. Maybe it's the uglyness of the railway bridge (for some reason my eye is drawn immediately there and not to the guy) and whatever checkered concrete thing is in front of the small dam?
>>2914555
Not that anon but I like the aesthetic.
You're pretty darn spot on with your self-criticism.
I, unfortunately, don't have enough of the eye to really give much more.
pretty good my mann. i salute the brave souls that still shoot slide film. shits expensive as fuck and rising.
>>2914714
I bought some in bulk a few years ago. ~$2/roll, couldn't pass it up.
>>2914850
Hey, thanks so much for the feedback! Totally agree with your comments. I was worried about that light in the night shot and definitely feel like it's distraction. Not a fan of photoshopping stuff out of photos but doing so would definitely clean the composition up quite a bit.
>>2914908
Cheers Mirari!
>>2915023
Thanks anon.
>>2915026
Cheers! Shoot slide costs pretty much the same as c41 in Japan, which is why I'm planning to shoot mostly slide while living here. It'll be cool to look back at the slides years down the road.
Appreciate the comments/crit thus far.
Great stuff OP, thanks for posting.
>>2914011
this is cool
>>2914555
Not him, but I'll comment on this photograph here.
I think you couldn't decide what you wanted the subject to be. This >>2913987 photograph makes me think that you maybe saw the tower and wanted to make a similar photograph. But, the couple was the more interesting subject.
I think that cutting the top of the tower off in the frame was a mistake, but the 6x6 format requires you to adjust for something like that where you want to get both something tall in the distance, and the foreground elements in the frame properly.
I feel like you could have made two photographs here, one of each of these elements. I feel like if you were closer to the couple it would make for an interesting photograph with the city and road as a vanishing point in the background.
Nice thread man, glad to see some more 6x6 shots.
Some of the fireworks and night shots remind me of work by Juliane Eirich.
>>2913975
This is incredible, visually grabbing but emotive too
The next two didnt do it for me based mostly on composition. The brightness of the stands is a bit jarring, and their position is a little bit too pushed into the corner with no breathing space, for how dark most of the scene is in both.
>>2913987
>>2913990
I really enjoy these night scenes. The museum is the nicer of the two, but I think this kind of stuff could definitely be explored further.
>>2913992
>>2913995
>>2913996
The lack of DR really detracts from these otherwise nice scenes. But I guess it will take a bit of time to learn how to get the most out of Provia in these scenes
>>2913997
nice
>>2914011
>>2914010
These are two that I'm naturally attracted to. Interesting scene, with nice interplay between the colours and textures of the natural elements and the sleek, stark lines colour and texture of the panels. Something about the composition in each just doesnt quite seem to be clicking as well as it seems that it could have, but they're really nice still
>>2914013
>Planning to shoot a lot more of the ugly side of Japan during the next year.
Looking forward to it, that 'typical Japan ugliness' is definitely good subject matter
lunch breaks over now, but I'll make some comments on the next batch later
Wow what a waste of film and money.
>>2915873
I know right? Partaking in a hobby you thoroughly enjoy is such a waste!
>>2915873
>can't find a genuine reason to dislike any of the photos in the thread
>better leave a vague and indirect comment about how the whole thing was a waste
>>2915655
>I think you couldn't decide what you wanted the subject to be.
Fuck man, spot on. I intrnded for the couple to be the subject, with the tower dominating the left side to scale them down. However, I stayed too far back. Now that you mention it I should have got close enough to completely elimate that wall on the right. I think at that point I would be close enough for the couple to be the obvious subject while still allowing for the tower to remain in the shot for a "dwarfing effect". I moved away from Kyoto last month but will go visit friends in the future and will definitely reshoot with your comments in mind. Cheers!
>>2915669
Awesome to see you comment dude, thanks a ton! Checked out Juliane Eirich; her night stuff is rad. Thanks for mentioning her.
I hear you on the latter two firework shots. I wouldnhave loved to center the stands in the bottom but this was one of very few spots I could set up my tripod (I was also needing to pull a construction fence up high enough above my lens to even shoot from this not-so-great angle). The composition definitely feels a bit wonky with the stands crammed into the corner and bleeding outnof the frame. I was hoping thr fireworks being in the upper left would balance things out but it didn't work as I had hoped.
Glad you like the night scenes!
As for the solar panel shots, again I agree thr comps are a bit strange. I'm not sure what I would do differently to make them better which is frustrating. Also doesn't help they were shot in terrible mid-day light. If you like this kind of stuff check out Reuban Wu's solar farm shots (IG: itsreuban).
I'm living pretty close to Yokkaichi now (major manufacturing area) and have some photo series ideas for shooting in that area.
Thanks so much for taking your lunch break to type that up, super helpful.
>>2915873
>2 months worth of shooting
>~$50 for the film and ~$60 for dev
>~$55/mo on my hobby
For a hobby claimed to be expensive, not bad imo.
One last image, final bump.

Best photo.
Disappointed with the church of light. Feel like you should have pushed that loads more.
>>2913975
The geometry is great, but the picture is a bit overwhelming for my taste.
>>2913978
Terrible framing
>>2913985
Boring take on an interesting subject.
>>2913990
This is my favorite
>>2913996
The background ruins this
>>2914002
The chairs and plant draw attention away from the geometry. I guess you didn't stand right in front of the building because the shape of the mountain behind the building wouldn't have be as pretty, but that angle makes the building look bad, and an uneventful subject makes the background irrelevant. You should have chosen which of the two you wanted to portrait.
>>2914008
great shoot but you should have isolated the subject better either by taking the picture from farther away or lowering your aperture
>>2914011
>>2914010
This looks too much like Andreas Gursky, only that these pictures are shit and Gursky's are great.
>>2914015
>>2914013
beautiful geometry, very boring light
>>2914562
terrible framing
Basically, you have talent, you have a great eye for finding pictures. However, your composition skills are still lacking. Keep practising, specially your control over light, and don't become too self-satisfied with your work. Also, for the love of God, develop your own style. Most of these pictures look way too much like someone else's work.
>>2916318
My pleasure.
>The composition definitely feels a bit wonky with the stands crammed into the corner and bleeding out of the frame. I was hoping thr fireworks being in the upper left would balance things out but it didn't work as I had hoped.
I imagine thats a huge part of photographing fireworks, a bit of hit and miss with composition due to the difficulty of the scene
Checked out Reuban Wu's stuff, not what I expected but damn a few of those shots are pretty incredible.
>Yokkaichi now (major manufacturing area) and have some photo series ideas for shooting in that area.
Keen to see what comes of it. My house and university are both near suburban industrial/manufacturing areas, and almost every day fr the past 3 years I've thought about getting out and shooting them (one day, maybe)
few more comments just cause I can
>>2914557
super lovely. the only thing that would have been nice is a car/ bike/ something throwing off a bit of light in the dark section of the road in the middle - or a person in the lit intersection.
nonetheless, its nice as it is.
>>2914560
really nice scene, but balance wise it could maybe do with a bit more room in the foreground? maybe thats just me
>>2914562
no idea what the other guy meant to terrible framing - because I feel its really strong. only thing I would suggest is having pushed it further to bring out the detail - even if it blew out the cross completely.
my canon rabal takes better image than this.
>>2919402
I'm happy for you :)
Cool to see you here Tomchy. I remember you from the SP days. RIP SP.
>>2916510
Thanks anon!
>>2919077
It was really awkward shooting square in there. That, and I had 800Z loaded and was still shooting wide open F3.5 @ 1/60th with no tripod. I took that one frame and spent the rest of the time shooting on the A7 (pic related).
>>2919101
Cheers for the comments. Definitely not becoming self satisified which is why I'm asking for critique. Curious whose work you think these look like though. Aside from the two obvious Burtynsky / Gursky -esque shots that I acknowledged I don't think these are mimicing a particular style.
>>2919326
Thanks again for chiming in. Your spot on about the fireworks. Composition is somewhat out of your control and you can only guesstimate where they will be exploding.
I waited around for about 10 minutes for a person/bike/car to come by. That's a dead end street and the odds of something happening at that time was quite small. Totally feel like it needs something too though.
Funny you mention more foreground. I actually shot the first frame with more and then panned up for the second which I posted. I'll post the other version when I'm back by my computer.
As for the last shot, I was maxed out on aperture and shutter speed. Didnt have my tripod unfortunately. Blowing out the cross would have looked really nice though.
>>2919402
It's not about the camera m8
>>2919832
Mannnnn, that was the BEST website for film photography discussion...medium format in particular. Sad to see it died. I learned pretty much everything I know from there. Cool to see an SP head on here!
>>2922191
It sure was. To bad none of it was achieved. The scanning guides could be useful.
