Is there a good alternative to a Sony DSC-RX100 (Mk I) when it comes to cost/performance as a compact/travel camera?

I'd especially be interested in squeezing out just a bit more zoom (5-7x).

Honestly? Olympus/Panasonic mft camera + Olympus 100-400 lens. The crop factor makes a 200-800 out of it, which should be enough zoom. The sensor is also way bigger than the one in the RX10.

>>
>>2913724
He's just fucking around with ridiculous advice. You asked for a pocket compact that extended to the equivalent of 150mm tops, and he suggested a 200-800mm equivalent lens for a system camera.
I don't know of a good compact camera with a lens that extends like you're asking, because I'm not that interested in compacts personally. All I can tell you is that Canon makes some compacts called GX or something that can be similar to the RX100, and at least one of them has a longer lens than the Sony.
>>
What are the top tier focal length combinations, /p/? I normally shoot at 50mm but I like 28mm for wider scenes. Thinking about getting a 135mm or something also.

All for film btw.
>>
>>2913725
Well, makes sense.Thanks.

From what I could find out, the Canon compacts do have a bit more zoom than the Sony, but usually not much (3x vs. 4x or so). From the comparison shots I've seen, the Sony seems to have better image quality, and it's cheaper.

I mostly just want a camera to get away from shooting with my phone. Should be able to take decent macro shots and zoom in a bit on those interesting out-of reach details of architecture.
A system camera or DSLR seems like overkill for a beginner like me...

Yeah it is. But if you don't nail it in camera, you're going to get fukt because you didn't shoot RAW.

MeFoto are price hiked Chink rebrands for all I know, and Guangdong Sirui Optical from Zhongshan is obviously also just Chinese.

> "low price and carbon fibre" meme
Yea, clearly you should only have carbon for $300+ - then it's not a meme anymore, but just a weight reduction measure.

A6000. YMMV if you want to stick with the kit lens.

>>
>>2913748
> the Canon compacts do have a bit more zoom than the Sony, but usually not much (3x vs. 4x or so). From the comparison shots I've seen, the Sony seems to have better image quality, and it's cheaper
Zoom is generally speaking a trade-off vs. image quality. This is the same even on expensive interchangeable lens cameras.

If you want the optically best possible image, you will have no zoom at all. If you don't care much, you'll maybe have a lot of zoom. And then there is a lot of compromise in between.

> A system camera or DSLR seems like overkill for a beginner like me...
No. You can easily operate these, and you will get better results. These cameras are not overkill - hell, they're a lot cheaper than film used to be. It is only a question of your personal budget.

If a few hundred dollars are hard on your purse and this is not such an important hobby to you, maybe better don't get a MILC or DSLR.

Otherwise, why not?
>>
>>2913901
>are there any (relatively) cheap lenses aside from the kit lens worth picking up
I like primes, so:
Sigma Art 19/30/60mm f/2.8. The 60mm is superbly sharp if you have use for a 90mm equivalent.

Sigma Contemporary 30mm f/1.8

Sony 28mm f/2

Samyang 12mm f/2 (and the other Samyangs, but I think that's one of the most interesting lenses)
>>
>>2913861

Lightroom is way to powerful and useful to shoot jpeg.

Unfortunately Fuji has shit raw support in lightroom youd probably get better .jpegs.
>>
>>2913893

a6000.

Kit lens is perfectly fine if you aren't a pixel peeper.

For an affordable increase in quality look at the sigma primes. The Sony 50mm is great too.

You can ignore the pancakes. The 16mm isn't complete trash, but it is damn close. The 20mm is only marginally better than the kit.
>>
>>2913892
>full capability

>>
>>2913927
Fuji has good RAW support in the last versions of Lightroom. Also you get a free RAW converter with the camera, why not use it instead of shooting Rockwell? I mean JPEGs.

Wifi is useful only for two things:
- wireless tethering, especially useful for models not equipped for any other kind of tethering (ex.: Pentax K-3/K-3II fuck you RICOH)
- "easy" JPEG transfer on parties and social gatherings amongst friends etc... ( "I heard you have a pro camera Anon, can you make a picture of me" etc...)

So I usually use a normal backpack when I'm off to work or whatever, as I need to carry a laptop and stuff. I also have a Fuji I'd like to carry with me more. Why can't other companies compete? Sony FE is simply the best mount. You can choose from the FE 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 50/2.8 Macro, 55/1.8, Rokinon 50/1.4 AF, Loxia 50/2, Mitakon 50/0.95. Then you can adapt the 50 1.2L, 1.4 USM, 1.8 STM, 1.8 I and II from Canon, as well as the Sigma 50 Art, Otus 55, and ZE2 50/1.4. Then there's the 58/1.4G, 55 2.8 and 3.5 Micro AIS, 58/1.2 Noct, 50mm 1.2/1.4/1.8/2 AIS/AF-D/G from Nikon. And don't forget the 50 Summarit/icron/icron-APO/ilux and Noctilux. And then there's the plethora of other 50mm designs from defunct companies.

Yeah, it just seems to me that even a bit more of it comes at a premium cost in both money and image quality for some reason; but maybe I just fail at interpreting reviews here.
For about 350-400€, the RX100 MK1 just seems to be good value to me.

I have two quick questions:

If you were going to buy a used camera, would you buy it from Kijiji and save $200 or buy it from a reputable camera shop with a 90 day warranty? I ask because I can get an a7 for $900CAD on kijiji or $1000 plus tax at Henry's ($1130 after taxes).

Also, which lens is sharper? The old Minolta Beercan or the new Sony E-Mount 70-200mm f3.5-6. Does the Sony adaptor with the translucent mirror use the same focus system from the SLT line of cameras? Would I get any stabilisation with the Beercan?

I'm guessing the lens stabilisation will help a lot at 200mm, not a fan of the slow aperture of the Sony zoom though (that said, I lose half a stop because of that stupid fucking SLT).

Generally speaking, you should be able to get a bunch of decent enough (low end to low midrange) DSLR/MILC kits for $600 and below.

Probably less lenses, given that for video you'll probably be using MF lenses anyhow (AF is acting fucking annoying on either camera for most situations - even if they all can "hit" fine, the transition is a pain).

And there are a lot more of those to adapt on an E-mount camera because of:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance

Never mind that you get a better MF assistance feature with focus peaking.

> more affordable accesories

Some lenses happen to not be perfectly calibrated when leaving the factory (shit happens sometimes). If your focus isn't on point, then the maker can apply some microadjustments to the affected lens. No big deal. Send it in, get it back a week later.

>D7200 has more lenses

Except everything but old screw drive lenses work with autofocus perfectly fine on the a7ii.

a7 has a larger sensor too, which means much better low light performance.

Your bets and hopes for IFA?
Canon: D8
Sony: a new line, of rugged, weather sealed cameras and lenses
Panasonic: hopefully the GH5 with in-body stabilization and flexible video-crop (or at all).
Olympus: more retro-looks and -feels
Fuji: even more retro-looks and -feels than Olympus
Nikon: I don't give enough of a fuck
anyone: maybe some more experiments with 3D/stereoscopic lenses.
anyone too: not too many fucking drones with inbuilt cameras worse than a GoPro that was dropped in custard

is the dust issue on a gr real? If so what should I get instead? X70?
>>
>>2914385
Yes it's real. It's real on most every mirrorless because of the normally open shutter design.

The real question is is it bad enough to be a deal breaker?

The answer to that is no. You just have to be more mindful of keeping your sensor clean and make a few small adjustments to how you operate.

Looking for some advice. I'm thinking about buying a used sigma 18-35mm art lens. There are a couple on amazon right now for $600 but they are the international version so the warranty would be void. One company has a 30 day warranty if the auto focus is bunk.
Should I save the $200 and get it used or spend the extra money for the warranty?
>>
>>2914344
IFA won't have shit. Photokina's coming up, but everybody's already blown their load. Only Oly and Panny have the official announcements for EM1II and GH5 left. Maybe Sony, since they have a habit of obsoleting bodies ASAP.
>>
>>2914418
I believe sigma and canon are both just a 1-year warranty on lenses (when their lifetime may be 10+) making it less attractive.

I bought a $60 device for my sigma 18-35 that lets any adjustments be done on computer for any problem with back-focusing or front-focusing at every zoom level.

>should I save the $200 and get it used
Used? No. If it was brand new international version without warranty it might be worth the 25% savings. A non-new non-warranty international version should be more like 40% or 50% savings before I'd go with it.

Hey guys, I used to be really into photography and am looking to come back in. I want to shoot a lot of high quality fashion/portrait type stuff and was thinking a Nikon D810 with a Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.4G lense.

The 180's only real advantage over the 80-200 is size. Personally, I'd keep the 80-200. If you shoot in the studio, or never need to change between telephoto focal lengths, then the primes might be better.

Hey /p/, i don't want to open a new thread, so I hope you can help me here. I'm looking for a very entry level camera, I'd like to start shooting portraits. >>

You can take portraits with any camera

Taking portraits that impress normies will require at least a DSLR/mirrorless with a fast lens

Professional portraits require so much more

In any case don't start in photography expecting to make money
>>
>>2914543
My first objective is to take picture for a blog I'm working on, and for it I need portraits. The small income is a consequence. Do you have any suggestion about the camera?
>>
>>2913941

Fuji raws in lightroom still fall WELL short of C1.
>>
>>2914544
If you're shooting people outside, any used entry-level DSLR will do. Ideally with the brand's 50mm f/1.8 lens as well for smooth backgrounds and more light, but the kit lens will also give you useable results
>>
Anybody gotten to play with the Fuji 23mm f2 yet? I just got the 27mm and I'm digging it, but I think I'll switch to the 23mm after the prices come down a bit if it's nice.

Yeah seems I read it wrong. So anyways this place I'm looking at only has a replacement fee of 20% with the rental protection plan. Protection plan is 10% of the total rental cost.

So looking at it this way. Lets say I rent myself a Nikon D5-FX which currently retails for 6500$. Lets say I add 2 lenses and shit and that brings it up to 7500$

I rent it for 260$ (Weekend) plenty of time for it to get stolen. Plus lens rentals equals out to about 350$. Adding the 10% protection fee equals to 385$.

Throw in a fake police report. (I'll report some sketchy black guy that they wont give a fuck about) This one only costs time.

So lets add up the totals.

20% of 7500$ is 1500$ plus the 385$ gives me 1885$ plus a few hour of my time.

I'd call it worth it for 5500$ in discounts that they'll just subsidize through some tax loophole.
>>
>>2915072
Why do you care?
>>
>>2915075

I'm sure you're reading the contract wrong. What website is it?
>>
>>2915077

>Damage and Theft Protection is a service offered by Henry's Rentals to cover repairs or replacement charges due to theft or damages incurred during normal use of the equipment on rental contracts that have a retail replacement value of $5000 or less. Damage and Theft Protection limits the customer's maximum liability for a stolen or damaged item to 20% of the replacement value of the item, or the repair fee- whichever is less. The charge for Damage and Theft Protection is 10% of the total rental fee.

I'll probably choose something much cheaper. As I realized my choices are over the limit.

>GUIDE NUMBERS

I understand that there are variables when talking about guide numbers.. So how exactly do I work out how powerful a flash is when compared to another one??

I am thinking about picking up a Fuji EF X500 flash when it finally comes out, I have read that it has a guide number of...

>Guide number: approx. 50 (ISO100·m) / 164 (ISO100·ft)

What I would really like to know is how powerful it is when compared to an SB910 or 600EXRT?

I want to up my interiors game and transition into utilizing flash as opposed to HDR, I have tried using flash before with an SB910 and occasionally found myself shooting at full power when I had harsh daylight coming in through the windows.

Is there any reason to cop a Sony A7 over a X-T10?
How do the viewfinders and the videoquality compare?
Whata re good alternatives if i like the look and feel of the Fuji but want to have better video?
>>
>>2915227
If you want video and no corrosion then it is better if you go with a GH4
>>
>>2915227

A7II has a fullframe sensor, and in body imahe stabilization. Those are probaly the biggest two.

The Sony's have better sensors, but some models hae a rolling shutter issue. a6000/a6300 would be your best bet if you NEED the APS-C sensor, otherwise go with an m43 camera.

No other manufscturer really does classic styling like Fuji, closest would prbaly be Olympus.

At the given distance (the GN digit), it assumes f/1 (yes really), typically 100 ISO. The rest is simple math.
Spend a while looking at a GN table and find the pattern, when you start to see that aperture and distance start to be relatively interchangeable, and that ISO 100, 400, 1600, and 6400 are whole stops, eveyhting else is in between and therefore confuses thngs a bit.... then you are beginning to see how it works.
Then google it
but as an example:
GN56 (metres)
At 56m and f/1 this flash will expose correctly on ISO 100
At 56m and f/2 this flash will expose correctly on ISO 400
At 56m and f/4 this flash will expose correctly on ISO 1600
At 56m and f/8 this flash will expose correctly on ISO 6400
Keep in mind that light (and ISO) have inverse square falloff.
eg: at constant flash power and arc of spread:
1m from subject flash on wall is 1mx1m - 1sqm - 1:1 intensity reaches wall
2m from subject flash on wall is 2mx2m - 4sqm - 1:4...
4m from subject flash on wall is 4mx4m - 16sqm - 1:16...
8m from subject flash on wall is 8mx8m - 64sqm - 1:64...
etc
I made these for myself to be easier to spot the patterns. (and therefore easier to do calculations)
http://pseudosticky.wikia.com/wiki/File:RangeGuide@50mm_YongnuoYN560IV.png
http://pseudosticky.wikia.com/wiki/File:Pentax_AF160FC_ringFlash-rangeGuides.png
this last one shows flash zoom... another minor complication that basically means you have to have a table to look at, or memorise the flash power at all it's relevant 'zoom's... as if!

Thinking aboot getting d3300 for 360 euros. Should I wait when d3400 comes out in the end of September or is the price isnt going to drop and just get it now.

A6300. Or you pay more for a higher-end Olympus or Panasonic.

Or the A7S II, A7R II or A7 II.
>>
>>2915234
The price is probably not going to drop very much either way.

Not least because Nikon probably won't upset their own lineup of cameras... so it's likely not going to be a very different camera.

What is a nice legacy wide-angle lens that's incredibly cheap? I'm in love with the Konica 50-55mms I've been finding around.
>>

Pick one.

Or get a modern Samyang prime - they're quite easy in terms of price.

I'm also looking for a legacy macro lens. Were they just shit before the 2000s?
>>
>>2915304
> Were they just shit before the 2000s?
Most don't hold up too well vs modern macro lenses.

But no, they weren't nearly as bad as most wide-angle lenses were.

Something like a Minolta 100mm f/2.8 Macro or whatever is definitely still better than putting a close-up achromat filter lens on an average modern zoom lens, which also might be good enough for some casual macro shots.

What's the DR of the 5D mk IV going to be?

I can't find it anywhere
>>
>>2915304
Ignore >>2915307

Old macro lenses are great, albeit only at macro ranges. They weren't well corrected for infinity use, being only passably sharp.
>>
>>2915335
Even at macro ranges, most are definitely quite far away from (good) modern macro lenses. No, the disadvantage is not just at infinity use.

That said, I'll point out that I didn't really trash "most" old macro lenses (unlike with the wide-angle lenses). I essentially said that they're probably quite good for casual users.
>>
>>2915307
Isn't that Minolta supposed to be pretty good even compared to modern lenses? Not a G Master or L or anything, but still pretty solid_
>>
>>2915329

They won't publish that, dum dum. Testers and reviewers have to establish that, and even then the results are specious.
>>
Photography's been my favourite activity for years now, and while I'm in no way a professional, it is definitely my passion. Friends have suggested me Canons 5D Mark III, would this be a wise investment even though it's already a couple of years old? I keep reading it's really good, and I'm up to invest on a good body
>>
>>2915347

No, they just announced the 5D Mark IV.

Right now's a great time to swoop up a used 5D mark 3 body. Prices will continue to drop as guys are looking to upgrade, but be wary of used-up old bodies from commercial photographers.

Personally, I'll never buy a new camera body ever again. The depreciation is too steep, and they almost never come with need-to-have-it features that the previous generation didn't have. Better to invest the difference in the accessories that actually make a difference, like a tripod, flashes, and most importantly, lenses. I've seen tons of photographers walking around with $2000-3000 camera bodies and a $100 50 1.8, since they didn't leave any extra money in their budget for lenses, and it's a common misconception among beginners that the camera is what matters in the system.
>>
>>2915349

I also understand that not everyone likes the idea of using second hand goods, so I will say that while it's a terrible time to buy a 5D mark 3, this is the best possible time to buy a 5D Mark 4 (whenever it's released). You'll never be further away from the point in time when the next model comes out than you are right now, and you can be among the very first people on the internet to get their greasy little hands on one.
>>
>>2915345
I can see how it could be worded that way, sure.

Is there a G Master macro lens now, by the way?
The 90mm FE is certainly great, but not a GM line lens.

Sigma Art? Either way, make sure it's a good one. Matters as much as your body in many instances.
>>
>>2915371

I remember the first time I dropped two grand on a camera. I felt giddy and light, which was the same feeling I had when I got hit by a car on my bicycle. I was in the same sort of daze, too.

Now I drop two grand with the dull math in the back of my head of how many more days I'll have to put in at my well-paying but terrible job before I recoup the costs. It's a vicious cycle.
>>

>>
>>2915379

Just go for it, buddy. The D750 is a terrific camera.

If you're really nervous, go buy a used D800 for less money and more pickles.

I would stick with the 35mm, though. It's probably the best 35 f/2 nikon has ever released. People just don't know about it yet because it's essentially brand new.

Olympus does classic styling, but it's mostly limited to the looks, the UI is modern with customizable dials, buttons and touchscreens. Even the tryhard-retro Pen F only has a fixed-function dial for exposure compensation. And the video is nothing to write home about - it's is included mostly to tick a box in the spec sheet, as anyone wanting a m43 video camera will buy a Panasonic anyway.
>>
>>2915319

lol wut. i don't own any Canon. I don't know where you're getting that. all i've been saying this whole time is that investing in crop lenses is unwise if you intend to get serious about photography, as all roads eventually lead to full frame.

I don't know when Pentax plans to up their video and AF game. Too many Pentax apologists claiming they don't need it, "I'll leave Pentax if they improve video", etc. It's pretty ridiculous.

Fujifriends used to be the same way until Fuji announced the X-T2 with great 4k and awesome AF tracking capabilities. Now suddenly video and AF is a Fuji thing! We actions sports now!

>>2915429
Pixel shift and astro-tracing is pretty exciting to me, and has a direct impact on image quality. It's not some LED or GUI colors gimmick. I really like all the neat things Pentax is doing with their shake reduction system, not just using it for shake reduction. And dat weather sealing NEVER gets old.

I'm going to be extremely disappointed if their new APS-C flagship camera doesn't come with better AF and AF tracking. No more excuses.
>>
>>2915449
When they get the patents sorted out for the dual-pixel AF in video on the K-70.
>>
>>2915449
>I'm going to be extremely disappointed if their new APS-C flagship camera doesn't come with better AF and AF tracking
Seeing some new results from the K-1 on motorsports the AF was improved a lot. It would be a wise decision to include the new AF sensor and improve the algorithm further for the new APS-C flagship.
Also more lenses with fast HSM or PLM AF drive. And fucking enable the KAF4 on the bloody K-3 dammit!
>>
>>2915449
Pixel shift isn't Pentax's invention though. Habbelsad did it years before, and I think E-M5II came earlier as well.

I wonder why Pentax doesn't try to make more niche things instead of trying to directly compete with Canikon. Did their misguided attempt at mirrorless cameras make them overly cautious?
>>
>>2915463
Not that kind of pixel shift resolution. It doesn't create more pickles, it gets rid of the bayer interpolation artifacts and softness.
>>
>>2915462
>more lenses with fast HSM or PLM AF drive

They could start by fixing the 16-50. What good is all the resolution and AF if your flagship standard lens is softer than a cheap Tamron?
>>
>>2915468
The 16-50 is fundamentally flawed by the optics, it is just too old design. The new 16-85 DC WR is considered to be the better successor although lacking the fast and constant aperture and star designation.
And the SDM drive usually shit itself on the older lenses, it was improved on newer batches but makes the parts incompatible. So you are stuck on the shit AF drive on an older one.
Just do as every other Pentax user and forget there was a 16-50.
>>
>>2915466
It's the same basic idea. Lolympus just does half pixel shifts and takes more images, so they get a bigger and more complex set of semi-overlapping data. I don't know the specifics, but one could probably pull full RGB data at original resolution out of that.
>>

>>
>>2915534
Yes, I understand, but if I want a fast lens I use a prime.
I'm not saying it is good enough in a lazy way, I am saying you have workarounds over the 16-50 conundrum. Until then there is the D-FA 24-70/2.8 or the Sigma/Tamron 17-50/2.8 if you want to use a fast zoom lens.
>>
>>2915538
Obviously, 16-50 isn't the only lens in the system. But it's a pretty annoying hole in their line-up, and instead of fixing it they had the audacity to bump the price by 50% a couple years ago.

> you have workarounds
Well, X-T1 is also a workaround... Although I'm not terribly impressed by the 16-55 either.
>>
>>2915547
I use a 16-45/4 and while it is not a terrific lens it is miles ahead of the 16-50/2.8 in sharpness. Too bad it is a reverse tele design and extends towards the wide end. Casts a horrible shadow from the on-board flash under 35mm but as a landscape and walkaround lens it is a good and cheap piece.
