Hey /p/ham question here
What makes Leica lenses great?
What sets their lenses apart from others?
Coatings? Glass elements?
What on an engineering aspect makes their lenses so superior?
What makes their out dated and vintage lenses superior to modern lenses?
What do Leica lenses offer that other lenses don't?
Please no responses of just "they're sharper"
I want to understand what makes Leica superior and why they've been considered superior for the past 50 years
They're sharper.

only thing they really offer is good build quality, small size , and excellent image quality

When talking about their film cameras: they did what they were supposed to do very fucking well and with a precision that makes them feel good to use. If you don't know what it's like to use a precisely tooled instrument to achieve a task, then there's not really a good way to describe it. Hasselblad kinda has the same thing going on. It's just an excellently designed machine that works the way it's supposed to. Whether or not you want that is another matter entirely.
In the digital age, they're mostly a boutique brand that lives in the same kind of market space that brands like Rolls Royce live in. They aren't for those who want the pinnacle of performance, but want performance with a cachet of style and legacy that other companies just can't provide.

Welp. Three posts in and we're already at car analogies.

That's a bad thing, why?
Also, Rolls is an apt comparison to Leica. You can find cheaper that do the job just as well, but without the social reaction that having one of the premium products will get you.
Would you rather we talk about Gucci bags?

They're a bad thing because they're hilariously inapt and a rote cliche at this point. Also, no one here actually has any experience with a rolls royce, so you might as well say "lunar rover" and it'll have the same effect and insight.

Leicas are made for precision. Everything is handcrafted and its not mass produced in sweat shops. The bokeh on a summilux is nothing like the bokeh on a canon L. No CA or Flares on bright objects unlike other lenses.. Its made to almost perfection.

Read the Thursten Overgaard interview with Peter Karbe - it provides a reasoned and measured explanation of their design philosophy: http://www.overgaard.dk/leica-50mm-APO-Summicron-M-ASPH-f-20.html
If you ever have like 2 hours - reading any of Irwin Putz's tomes on the Leica lenses and their development, etc. - you will learn a lot about lenses in general, and the good/bad/ugly of the Leica catalog as well.
Once you are playing in the rare air around lenses like the Summicron M 50mm f/2 APO ASPH, you're talking about manufacturing tolerances that are at the very limit of commercial feasibility... just for a perfectly neutral lens.
That lenses like this can exist, along with the Nocti 0.95, the Summilux 50 ASPH, the 75mm 'Cron, the R 35-70 APO - it's a good thing overall.

Don't forget how rapid but smooth the transition from sharp focus to out of focus is and how beautifully it handles texture, detail and tonal variations even in deeper shadows.
Maybe along with the (now discontinued) ZM 50mm Makro Planar f/2 ... no other lens gets me more comments from non-photographers than the 'Lux 50.
