The shot was in quite dark shadow, what you see there is pretty true to life in terms of colour. I've compensated exposure by +1.5 on this one, looks much nicer, I think I'll just have to wait to get an opportunity to shoot the bird in better light. it would be very difficult to get closer but it would be nice to have the shot without the bricks I agree.

Yeah, a shot like that is taken on a tripod with remote with a prime lens stopped down, metered exactly and processed in a very particular way. Otherwise it's not plausible to get the sharp black to white contrast on adjacent pixels in the final image.

Shoot from different places. Try different focal lengths. (Note: This doesn't mean stand in one place and turn the zoom ring. It means moving forwards and back and using the zoom feature to compensate.) Try low and high angles.
I can see that you're at 55mm with a maximum aperture at this focal length of f/5.7. This leads me to believe that you're using your 18-55mm kit lens. If you have a 55-200 or similar, I'd try moving further away and zooming in (especially moved to the left to get a better angle of the boat). If you don't have a lens like that, consider one.
You used a square composition and put the boat dead center, which isn't bad, but isn't very exciting either. I wouldn't throw this image in the garbage but there's room for improvement

i usually do think about composition and angles but personally i am happy with the composition of this photo, as it is a very simple photo, and i dont think a different angle would make much of a difference

Oh I agree, it was stupid of me, but I accidentally flipped one over to it, and I've never actually used the """high speed""" setting (horseshit) so I figured, why not see if it lives up for shits and giggles? This is the only one that isn't a vague black blur, but they're snapshits of the family dog so nothing lost, nothing gained.

I have some like those. Looks like you have a slow shutter so you just underexpose so you can have crisper shots.
I would suggest making it more visible, try converting to a black and white color filter.
