Hey guys; So I've been shooting a ton of automotive photography lately and I really enjoy it, have a few friends with some supercars who are more than happy to let me get some photoshoots in. But how do you break into the market of making money off of it? I can't seem to find any gigs to even offer, where do I begin to find car gigs in the first place?

Also; If you've done some automotive photography, feel free to put it up.

Take it easy with the editing, the sky looks fake as fuck in 1st pic.
Don't photograph graffiti, it's ghetto and nigger-tier.
Those hands look retarded, like you ran out of car photos so you just put in whatever bullshit pics you had laying around. Get your shit together, senpai, be organized and more professional.

To answer your question, beyond having a good portfolio to reference, I would think perhaps the after-market parts used in some of the custom tuning world wouldn't be happy to have someone go to some events and try to piece together something eye-catching.

They tend to be relatively less difficult to get sponsored by. I have a couple friends who already have gotten sponsored after only having entered the scene maybe a year before.

So if you're trying to put all your options on the table, I would consider this.

Also ofc you if you have favorite photographers who focus on the kinds of cars you would want to work with, read about how they did it or try to even ask if they could impart some knowledge.

Appreciate the feedback! The graffiti was sort of a forced location by the owner haha; the hands just happen to be there from the gallery randomly sorting the photos; I'll try to re-organize it!

>>2908371
The first part was a little confusing? Would be happy, or Wouldn't be? -And thanks! I'll try and reach out to some of the larger photographers in my area.

>Don't photograph grafitti, it's ghetto and nigger-tier

God you're fucking stupid.
>>
>>2908364
You should follow 'Frederic Schlosser' on Facebook. He's a simple student that started taking pics of cars about 5 years ago and now he's one of the best commercial car photographers on the planet. To be successful, you need a strong portfolio and great skills in both photography and postprocessing.

Btw - get Virtualrig for some rolling shot action.

add all the car groups etc in your area on social media

go to car shows and meets and take pics

make a facebook or insta or whatever and put peoples cars up on it, tell the people to check out your page or website or whatever

>>2908367
the point of car photography is to make the cars look good, fuck the sky, no one gives a shit about the background, fair enough it can attract attention to the photo and make it more interesting, but still its not an important factor

My bad. I meant they would be happy to have someone supplying them with pics or something marketing-wise.

I do agree with the idea of just go find a local group and start seeing what kind of stuff you can start working around.

Also I think the criticism of the sky and editing of the backgrounds in general is a little misdirected. Yes, the focus should be making the car look good. Thus, if you make some tweaks to make the image accomplish that goal then you're doing fine.

Sorry OP if I partly hijack your thread, but this is relevant to my request and since I'm not a regular of this board, I don't plan on opening a new thread if I can avoid it.

In the scope of a website I have created with a few friends, we have the chance to photograph motorbikes, still and in motion, and write reviews about them.
This is done on our free time and we are not getting paid for this, but we try to have a decent result.

Also we do not have the means to attend international fairs, given the remote location we live in (Reunion Island).
So I'm wondering if there are any photographers with an interest in motorcycles who plan on attending the coming shows, and if they would be willing to work some king of agreement out.

Bonus question, we'll have a bike to shoot during a full eclipse, any suggestion to make the most out of it?

I posted in a rush during breakfast, but I had something to give, too.
OP, maybe our own experience may help you.

We have started doing our own material with our own ressources, shooting our own motorbikes and such. We promoted them on our FB page.
Then we have asked a shop to let us test ride a bike, and we have made a video clip out of it.
It got a modest success on FB and we have been approached by a local magazine. They have asked us to write reviews for them, as they don't have time to actually test the bikes (they focus on cars, with only 2 pages about the motorcyles).
This partnership gave us leverage to approach more shops, and some of them agreed to lend us new bikes when they hit the market.
When I showed our Harley Davidson material to BMW, the guy asked me how much it would cost them to do the same. He was almost shocked that we didn't ask for money in return....yet.
Our latest video of the BMW has been viewed over 22K times on FB.
So to sum up:
-Try to do a good job
-Do it for free in your corner and try to promote it through social medias
-Get your foot in the door with a legit partner who will, in return, give you credibility.
-Become legit and start selling your work.
>>
>>2909149
why didnt you ask BMW for money if they were willing to give it to you?
>>
>>2909159
Because we haven't set up a company to legally cash in any money yet, and because right now we need to build up our reputation locally more than we need a few hundred euros. We want to be recognized as motorcycle "specialists" and not as an advertising company. If we accept money for our test rides, then how can we claim to be independant?
In the future we may think of a way to monetize our experience, but maybe more in the form of advertising space on our website.
>>
>>2909165
ok cool
>>
Bumping >>2909014 since OP seems to have left.
How would you guys take advantage of an eclipse?
I was toying with the idea of time lapsing the eclipse with the bike in the forefront.
We'd have a light source on the bike so as the sunshine would decrease, the bike would reveal progressively.
Is that dumb?

>>2908417
butthurt nigger detected
all dem tears of KFC and waddymelon, mmm, delicious
>>
>>2908417
You're both right.

Graffiti is nigger tier, but then again, but so are most supercars and their owners.
>>
>>2909165
>If we accept money for our test rides, then how can we claim to be independant?

What makes you think anyone cares?
You're living in a dream world if you think automotive "journalists" are all independent and don't take gifts or money from every company they "test" for.

>>2911328
Read again, I'm not against being paid but this is not a priority yet. A small Island is a closed market and a good reputation is more valuable than a quick buck.

I didn't miss anything the first time.

Taking the BMW job was a definitely a good thing for your portfolio.
But doing it for money would not have jeopardized any future jobs, and doing it pro bono didn't do you any favors either.

Being impartial, honest, and objective may seem like the way to go. But it will hurt your future in the long run.
Car companies and magazines do not want objective reviews. They want someone to highlight the good things about their product and gloss over the bad.

Triumph won't care that you previously took money or sponsorship from BMW. But they will care that you pointed out some flaws.
Its the same for any publication. Nobody wants to lose advertising money for something as stupid and irrelevant as the truth.
There is no place for negativity.
>>
>>2911868
No, I didn't mean they offered money to test the bike and write reviews, they thought we charged the shooting and editing of pics and videos.
We don't want to charge for this part as it may deter them from giving us all the bikes they have.
If it becomes an expense, then they may think twice before giving us access to the bikes.
So right now it's more important to us to have plenty of bikes to test, and make plenty of material for ourselves, rather than charging a few hundreds euros for one shooting and then struggling to have any bike at all.
