been a while since I last made a thread.
so /p/, guess who's a photography major from now on. just gotten myself accepted into my city's theater and cinema university, with the highest exam scores in the cohort so I'm pretty stoked!
gonna start building my portfolio and look for scholarships so I can study photography abroad next year hopefully.
dumping some of my recent street shots, and also though you guys can be a bunch of stubborn and hostile faggots, I did get a lot of my knowledge from lurking/posting here during the recent months - so thanks a lot /p/, and happy shooting!

These books already exist (don't have a link sorry, someone here will though). There was a book being made at the start of this year by Iggy, representing 2015's photos, but after receiving everyone's submissions Iggy fucked off somewhere and hasn't been on /p/ since.

What a fucking waste of an education, learn a useful trade, do photo on the side or do an apprenticeship, you will learn much more.
photography majors are pretentious faggots, which makes you a pretentious faggot. You have great photos but you're a dumbass
>>2907671
You are everything wrong with this board. Who cares what he does with his life, it's his not yours, it's none of your business and if anything, you are the dumbass. All we see here is that he takes good pictures while you are totally worthless. Go ahead OP.
>>2907671
I stopped studying economics after my third year to pursue photography because it's something that I can truly dedicate myself to, wholeheartedly. and to me how a trade can be considered useful is the way one uses it.
I have a more than decent background on economics and media already so my intention is to use photography as a means of finding a scholarship so I can go abroad out of my little country to major in something like visual communication and advertising, not fine arts.

jesus christ, when did /p/ become /safespace/? I care what he does with his life because I dont want a fellow /p/ster to throw way money.
you should of acquired your economics degree, or double majored/minored in photo. I will admit that the connections you get in art school are better than anything you'll get without it, but thats about all you get.
Im telling you this, and I was harsh because I myself have a photography degree. 2 yrs community college then transferred into large state uni. The ONLY thing it has helped me with is connections, but still they're slim to none. I could of spent more time actively trying to budge my way into the local commercial/advertising scene in my city than wasting thousands of dollars on a worthless piece of paper.
No matter how good, or bad of a photographer you are no one will care about your degree, literally no one. Your portfolio and your connections built through eager networking are the only and primary factors.
>>2908128
Not every country is like America anon, where you very well should be considering the monetary value (payback?) of your studies. For example where I'm from, it's the norm to go study stuff you find interesting, as the government actually gives you money to live off of and pays part of your rent every month when you're a student.
Now, I don't know how it is in Vietnam, but I'm all for OP for chasing his dreams. You only live once, so do what you want, try stuff and if it doesn't work, move on to different things. I know many older people who really regret not going for the thing they were passionate about. And I know people my age who went for the thing they thought they were passionate about, and found out they really weren't, it was just nice to daydream about. So they dropped out or graduated halfheartedly, and are now doing something else. And that's fine.
I have one of those "worthless" pieces of paper too, not from photography though. It was worth it, after all I only paid for it in some years of my life. After graduating I spent a while doing gigs, searched for a job, and then went to a different school to study a more practical thing that gets me a better paying job. Zero regrets. I still moonlight at the more creative thing I have a degree in and if I ever get the chance, I'd happily switch into doing it full time.
Now obviously we have high taxes here to make this system work, but that's a different topic altogether.
>>2908128
It depends where you live & what type of photography you're getting into. Over here if you want to get your work into galleries, etc. Having one of those piece of papers help you ALOT.
>Your portfolio and your connections built through eager networking are the only and primary factors.
Yeah and going to school is the quickest way to getting connections with people in the industry. I fucking wish I gone to school for it just for that alone.
>>2908128
It's too bad art school never had an English course you could HAVE taken. Maybe no one will hire you because you have no idea when to use HAVE instead of OF.
But really, fellow photog, for the sake of you trying to "make connections" learn that "should've" is not short for "should of" it is short for "should have." This type of minor difference is what makes a customer look at your email like it is from a fellow professional or a kid off the street. Every little thing counts when you are trying to seal a deal.
>>2908141
I agree and disagree with this post.
The disagree portion is that it's really not that hard to do a double major. It just takes effort. My view is that if you do go the college route, double major in something that'll definitely be able to provide you a good living (making the investment worthwhile, a sort of hedging the investment), and something you're passionate about (if it's not one of the more lucrative majors). This way you have options. You have something to fall back on if you find out that your passion can't keep you in the lifestyle that you want or if you find that you prefer to keep your passions separated from what you do to finance your life. Doing something you love for pay DOES change it. Things definitely become different when you have to balance out your outlays vs your income from a given project and this isn't necessarily what everyone wants to do with their lives. Some people are far, far better off being middle manager (for example), and pursuing their passions in their off time, and this does include people who could easily be financially successful at their passions. Some people really do not like to link the two.

I really appreciate your input guys, whether you agree with me or not. honestly speaking, I'm aware that a degree in photography isn't all that valuable, and paying 40~50k a year to study it in the US is just so expensive - especially for me, photography is something that I can learn and advance by myself, and that a photographer's worth is measured by his ability, not a degree. that's why I'm so determined to find a scholarship, and if I do I want to major in visual communication or advertising, not photography specifically.
also I'd like to think of it as a path that will get me out of my little country, which is not something I find very possible if I keep pursuing that degree in foreign trade - I was enrolled in the single most prestigious economics university in Vietnam so the competition for scholarships is very stiff, and economics isn't something that I can pursue wholeheartedly either. I just really love photography, and I want to put my all into something for once, guys.

weird colours
weird contrast
picture of a disabled guy with an odd face
being an alley gremlin
why should we care about this photo? its boring and makes zero sense to the viewer, the only good thing is that youve shot it at golden hour but even then its lost to your bad processing. go shoot something worth looking at then come back for critique

Not a fan of the lifted blacks here. The lighting looks nice, but the lack of blacks aren't helping accentuating the contrasting light condition.
>>2905700
I'd crop tighter and get rid of the left side where the stall ends, so the image implies a more overwhelming environment.
>>2905703
Doesn't really say much to me. I'd drop the photo if you're looking into compiling a photo series.
>>2905783
Dude looks out of focus here... not sure why since you're already at f/8.
>>2905788
Nice. Love the action that's happening in every staircase. Would crop a bit tighter and get rid of the top. Reminiscent of Fan Ho's staircase shot.
>>2905790
Beautiful moment. Again, would crop tighter to get rid of the trash next to the column at the far left, the blue thing at the upper left corner, and to crop the road so the photo ends with the ornate sidewalk for less clutter.
>>2906560
This one feels too snapshitty. It describes the scenery well, but there's a lack of focus point imo.
>>2907981
Not digging how the guitarist ends up literally taking the spotlight from the vocalist, since he's the brightest and pretty much dead center. The photo feels very indecisive, both with the composition and with the exposure.
>>2909098
I like the moment here, but feel like the shot would benefit from you being there for 5–10 minutes, slowly building up a series of moments to choose from. Right now the photograph feels unresolved. Additionally, I don't like the fact that the left dude's left foot is visually absent in the frame.
>>2909109
Curious to see the colour shot. It's such a cop out to convert colour to BW because colours don't work, and it's especially obvious if it's in a photo set.
>>2909997
Manual focusing for hyperfocal would've benefitted the shot since the woman is OOF, but the motorcycle is too distracting anyway so I'd throw away this shot. It's a fun one, but unresolved.
>>2910653
I like the light but not necessarily the composition.
Feel free to disagree.
Congratz Hanoian!! You're actually my fav street photographer from /p/. I was kind of rude the first time I replied you, but I love your work and even saved a few to better studies (not joking). So, I want to say sorry for being rude the first time, and say you're a unique photographer with a bright future!!
Do you process all of these individually and manually? Or are these Fuji presets and/or Lightroom presets you use?
Tones are nice
>>2910850
wow thanks for input man, it's nice to have someone on /p/ take the time to scrutinize my photos for once. I mostly agree with your comments, and I'd like to elaborate a bit more on what I'm doing with this thread - the photos I post here are usually completely new and I post them on /p/ right after I got back home from shooting and finished post processing, hence why you'd find some of them snapshot-ish. living in Hanoi and being out and about most of the time gives me a lot of opportunities for shooting street so I always try to post as many new ones instead of old keepers as I can to seek your feedback!

thanks guys, I'm still relatively new to LR so still experimenting a lot, most of these are edited individually which might explain why some may look a bit out of place compared to the rest. usually I'd use this LR preset that I've developed for a starting point though
posting a few old ones, I've been down with a cold after quite a hectic week so not many new shots :<

Pretty nice, is that Fuji's in-camera jpeg processing?
>>2912930
I lurk 99% of the time, and you seemed like you desperately wanted more critique so I decided to pick some that I feel like are worth noting. Also, it's fine that some are snappy or experimental. To me, I was just giving feedback as if you are editing a photo essay.
In regards to this photo, I like the approach to the photograph, but would prefer more negative space up top instead of going for a square crop. That said, I really dislike square crops so maybe I'm biased. Crop aside, consider burning the legs so it's not as hot, and warm the newspaper so it's not as blue.
>>2912933
Way too overcooked. Really strays away from the toned-down style you have going on in the rest of your photos.
>>2912934
Really like the vibe here, but I suggest playing with the crop and don't hesitate killing some elements for a stronger composition, because a lot of things are really far apart, and the negative space doesn't necessarily strengthen the photograph.
>>2913048
Kind of torn about this. Not quite sure if breaking the rule of thirds benefits the story here or not.
>>2913078
most of my recent shots are RAWs processed in LR
>>2913843
thanks man, honestly speaking I find asians and western people have very different perspectives when it comes to art in general and photos specifically, so I try to get as diversed feedbacks as I can. your comments about the color temperatures are spot on too, though I have yet to develop my PS skills. I plan to do some studio work in the near future though, so that's another thing I'm gonna have to work on.
>>2913844
yeah I was in a hurry to capture the moment in the sunset photo so kinda messed up the exposure while I was fumbling around with the camera. tried to salvage it but it didn't come out entirely like I wanted it to :<
with >>2912934 I tried a square crop too but with how the stools are framed so close to the edges it didn't feel quite right, like it was missing something on the upper part of the frame so I left it that way
for >>2913048 I went for symmetry, and the old woman is still in the center of the frame so I really liked how that one worked out though
just recovered from my cold and I have been really busy with work so haven't been able to go shoot all week which was a real bummer guys. gonna go on a short trip to another city tonight though, so that should be a nice change of pace.
have a film shot for now, happy shooting /p/
