This is the Film General Thread, aka FGT.

I'm going to kick off the thread by asking one more time if anyone has used a Canon Pro 1 before, and if they have any advice before I dive in and start fucking shit up? Bought it last week, still haven't plugged it in. It is in situ though, and I bought my first small pack of paper yesterday. Ilford 'Galerie Prestige' 310GSM Smooth Pearl in A4.

I'll probably be breaking it in by printing some cheesy wedding photos I took in the last few weeks.
Shot something like 20 rolls for one and 12 for the other. Only have a handful of 120 colour negs still to dev, but a buttload of scanning to get through.

Nikon fm10 vs canon ae-1 for someone's who's trying to move up from a regular p&s?

Putting it in the fridge makes it last a very long time past the expiration date, it's a good idea to store it cold. If you freeze it then it supposedly lasts even longer, basically forever, but then it has to thaw before you can use it and it just seems a little unnecessary to me.

I'm a nikon fag who has had the fm-10, don't buy it. It's plastic garbage. for 200 dollars you could easily get a better Nikon SLR. Idk anything about Canon FD cams, but the AE-1 is fine too.
>>
>>2905022
What other Nikon cameras would you recommend? I'm in no rush to purchase, so maybe I'd be willing to wait and save a few hundred more. What should I look for that's ~450 or less?
>>
>>2905026
I mean, what features are important to you? just start reading Ken Rockwell pages on Nikon cameras. If you want auto focus, get an F100. If you want manual, get an F3. Then slap on whatever cheap prime you want.

>everything went better than expected
I just plugged it in, installed everything I could find on the canon driver website, downloaded the ICC profile for my paper from Ilford, and went to town.
I think it's totally fucking insane how much menu diving, tab hunting and checkbox checking you have to do to get it to do what you want, but I guess these are the breaks.
Printing must just be waiting for its great white apple-shaped saviour.
All I wanted it to do, by the way, was not rescale the image, print at the DPI I saved in the file, use the Ilford ICC profile, and not arbitrarily gimp my A4 paper with inch wide margins when the machine's capable of borderless A3.
I'd imagine that anybody who knows how to resize a fucking jpeg themselves would want to do exactly the same thing literally every time they printed anything at all, but apparently not...

I did a 35mm B&W wedding pic first up, using the canon raw converter plugin, Print Studio Pro, which I had to print twice because the first one upscaled itself, thanks to a hiding checkbox.
Then I did this colour 645 scan, which I decided would fit on the page at 600dpi. No joy from the Canon plugin, so I tried printing through GIMP.
Worked great, once I realised I had to tell it I was using a Canon paper to get small margins, then make it manage colour with the ICC profile.
>if how I'm doing this sounds pants-on-head retarded, please tell me, I am a total novice
Pic related is 100% crop of the scan on the left, which I sent to the printer as is, and the same area of the print itself (shot with one direct flash off to the side, the highlight at the top of the sign isn't blown out, it's just caught glare) on the right.
Not too bad, I reckon.
Still, a black and white wet print shits on this for sharpness and detail and tonality, seriously ignore internet shills who would say otherwise, I can't believe I took that bait so hard myself.

First time posting here, and I figured this thread would be proper for my question. My uncle is a prof. looking to post some online lecture material, and has a room set up at his place where he can walk around and write/ gesture, with lighting just like a real lecture hall.

He's looking for a decent tracking camera, that can be mounted and follows his movements in realtime. I've done some research and pulled up a two names, which I'll post below, but I have a feeling these are just the ones that shill themselves hardest on search engines. Anyone have any other brands/ models they'd recommended if you've done this sort setup before?

Anyone know of some cheaper ways to get it developed?

In my area right now (Halifax,Nova Scotia) they have to send away the film, which takes a week.. and it costs $15 per roll to get made into digital, excluding prints.

It has just become to pricey recently here, since all 1 hour photos shut down here.

If you don't have a cheap lab near you, then likely no unless you start developing yourself.

Thought I'd share my recent finds. Picked up this Minolta TLR and just got around to cleaning everything; turned out beautifully. It was filthy, when I took out the viewfinder to the clean the mirror I found that a spider had been squatting in my camera for some time. I'm hoping to get a roll in it soon after I put in new light seals.

Got a minty Bessa R for a good price as well, it came with a Jupiter 8 lens. I've been told that that particular lens is pretty awesome for the price. I'll likely be looking for another lens as well; what are some good LTM lens I should keep an eye out for? Unless the glass is over a thousand, price isn't an issue.

Not film related, but thought I'd share anyway since Leitz (Leica) made cameras. Found this Leitz Trinovid dog for eight dollars. He's of German design and descent, and uses the Uppendahl prism system for his optics, which still blows some modern dogs' optics out of the water. He came out of the dog factory in '82, and somehow made his way to a ratty thrift store in north Georgia. No idea what that green thing by his feet is though.

Pic related is about 12 months old. Most of the 35mm is gone now. Quite so: next to no light, bird's moving around like sixty, no depth of field to speak of. But the colours came out nicely, and the processing is fairly alright. As far as test rolls for them C41 chems goes, I was pleased.

And yeah, macro on Acros 100, say no more say no more.

The X-pan is literally the same. They're pretty good if you know you're there to shoot pano 135 4 laifu.
I'm fully aware I entered into the pano pleb meme fully and live with my decision. t-tho at least I don't crop.
>>2905662
I'm honestly not sure. I've toyed with selling it since I got my xpan. Everything else works. I was considering knocking like 1/5th of the price off it because of the shutter bug.

It's a minor annoyance for me but if you're a smart tog you won't notice it.
Sadly I'm not willing to trade it for film. My 2nd Freezer's full and my main fridge/freezer's also at limit.
I'm just fishing for what people would find acceptable for a fully functional back-frame counter. The thing that's put me off selling it for so long is how autistic most film photographers are.

I was in love with it before I got my xpan, but nowadays I find it getting used far less.

Yeah I honestly wouldn't care. I could tell you wait frame each of my 4 current backs are one without looking. Fair enough about not needing film. Hopefully I find one in a store over here sometime soon. Lots of stores have Bronica gear but it's always ETRS stuff.

One thing I've always wondered, how do you know what exactly will be recorded on the film when looking at the viewfinder? Did the back come with a mask or do you just guesstimate?

Pic semi-related. When I fell for the 35mm through a 120 back meme.
>>

>One thing I've always wondered, how do you know what exactly will be recorded on the film when looking at the viewfinder? Did the back come with a mask or do you just guesstimate?
It has it's own viewfinder which is pretty useless. I got a transparency mask that sits on the focusing scren instead. That worked better for me.

I tried that too but was unimpressed with the results. The 135w is the next step up but is still weight. The ultimate 135 pano setup is an xpan. No questions asked.

Anyone know what the longest telephoto that I could fit into a Speed Graphic is?

From having a quick look, it seems there is good amounts of variation with flange distance despite same/similar focal lengths among lenses.
>>
>>2905909
You need to look for ~tele~ designs, not just long focal lengths. But the real answer is not very long.
I think there are a couple of Fuji and Nikon 300mms that are right on the cusp even for proper field cameras on standard bellows, you might be SOL with the Graflex.

>>
>>2905814
Well I don't think it's total garbage.
Film will degrade over time, irrespective of how its kept. It's the degree of the decay that changes, and at the end of the day only you can decide where the threshold sits for "unusable".
The BIGGEST factor influencing this though, is film speed. 400 speed colour film will almost certainly be trashed after 10 years expiry. You can still take pics with it, of course, but you'll want to shoot it at 100, and even then accept that a lomo-look is going to result.
I shot some 10 year expired Tri-X on the weekend, and the base fog on that is very substantial, especially when it's next to a roll of similar vintage T-Max 100 developed at the same time. Still usable, of course, but your grain and tonal range are compromised.
*I just "measured" the base fog by metering though the film base of both like they were ND filters: 1 stop for TMX, 2 stops for TXP*

Get an SB20. Pic related.
It's small, quite powerful, can bounce, has 3 settings for focal length, can be used in Auto thyristor mode or Manual, with an easy to use scale on the back, and when you upgrade your Nikon can also do TTL.
Mine was $20.

I hear that's the best T series model for being such a step up from the previous years release. Always makes me giggle thinking about a fully electric+plastic body with the FD lenses for the time period. As for the Tamron you could get some good very of far aways images with it. Start with a mediocre film first than work your way up.

That's quite a lot considering those are Ameribux, the lenses belong in the trash, and using the T70 is like scrubbing your dick with AIDS-infected steel wool.
But if your ego will allow you to shoot in Program Auto, and you can find a real lense, and you can just grit your teeth and deal with the hateful noises it makes, it's a perfectly effective camera.

thoughts on fuji ga645zi?
>>
>>2906204
fuji ga645zi if you can deal with a non interchangeable lens, i dont know about the lens quality but fuji does make some god tier mf lenses so i have high hopes
>>
>>2906238
I generally shoot 35mm on 35mm and once I have a lens I kind of just adapt to the focal distance and dealwithit
Thinking maybe the GA645 or 645i for the 60mm (35mm on 35mm equivalent) though instead of the zi because I'm not a fan of zoom lenses and never shoot more outside of 35mm anyway.
>>
>>2906245
I'm not a fan of zooms either but in the case of the zi, it's so small and has such excellent IQ that the only downside I can think of is the slower lens. On the short side, it's f4.5 instead of f4 so not a big deal either
>>
>>2906251
surely the GA645 has slightly better IQ due to the fixed lens?
As I said though I tend to like 1 focal distance because I like to adapt to it and make the photos adapt to.
>>
>>2906225
Yeah, I looked at yen earlier today, the AUD's sucking a fat one right now.

Hey guys, idk if this is the right thread for this, but what can you guys tell me about pinhole photography? Saw some cool pics and it looks dirt cheap to do, but I can't find any info on where to get the film, processing etc. Any info would be appreciated.
>>
>>2906288
is there any discernible reason to go for 6x7 over 6x4.5 other than the obvious bigger negs?
>>
>>2906291
Well having a choice of lenses, I guess.
I'm the massive gearfag OP, and I find the IQ from 645's to be worth the jump from 35mm and adequate for my needs.
BUT - I shoot a lot of verticals, and for that both the native orientation of RF 645's and the 3:4 aspect ratio are ideal.
And if you're mostly putting your work online, vertical resolution is what it's all about, so if you mostly shoot in a landscape orientation, you won't quite get that dank MF feel unless you go for 6x6 and up.
And finally, there ARE shitty 645 lenses. Or more correctly you're still going to enlarge enough sometimes to see the deficiencies in some 645 lenses.
Whereas 6x7 and up, pretty much everything is world-class if-your-photos-suck-its-not-the-camera tier.
>>
>>2906162

How to meter for slide film?
>>
>>2906477
Is it just me, or is this FGT getting massively shat in by basic bitch q&a's?
Use the fucking meter, is how you meter for slide film. Do what the fuck it says.
If your film is ISO 100, and the meter says you should expose for ISO 100 at f/2.8 for 1/125th of a second, then fucking do that.
If it so happens it says 1/250 but you're trying to take a picture of a wedding dress in a snowstorm, use 1/60.
If you're trying to take a picture of a negro in a mine shaft, use 1/500. It's that simple.
>>
>>2906477
the way you meter for negative film

Just keep in mind that underexposure is easier to fix than overexposure (the reverse from negative film)
>>
>>2906477
Most slide has fuck-all for dynamic range. You have zones III thru VII. Try to preserve highlights in non-emitted light as far as possible; emission sources can go straight to zone XX for all I care.

In terms of scenes, you'll be looking for low contrast and vivid colours.

>Wait, so you can use a WLF with it? Fug that! I guess it'd be easy to make your own mask though.
I fugged up. I was sleepy at the time.
It has it's own focusing screen, you can use the WLF with it.
You can also buy the generic hassy masks online for a few euros and use them instead (which is what I use anyway)
>>
>>2904798
is there anyway to get different color tints when developing color film?
or can one only do that kinda stuff in post editing

Actually, it's the other way around. And metering isn't as easy as you say it is. For instance, you never addressed the difference between reflective and incident metering. If he's using his camera's meter, he should know what type of meter it has and how to use it. If metering is so simple why did Alex Burke dedicate a whole blog post to it? should've just linked him to the post, it's well written, comprehensive and without the shitty condescending attitude.

Welp, in the trash you go.
When you take a meter reading off a white scene, and you intend to render it as white in the final image, you add two stops.
Inverse for something you want to render as black (but not as much, because it's nice to have a little detail in there).
Alex's blog post reiterates constantly that metering is simple, and not a dark art at all.

The most helpful hint I've had re: metering was that "18% Grey" typically corresponds to the luminance of grass. So if your scene is complex and you have no idea what your meter is picking up on (and you don't have an actual meter, to take an incident reading), point it at the damned ground and lock your exposure there.

>>
>>2906763
>focusing a 24mm in the dark is just as hard as ever though
Here's a protip:

Step 1: Assessing the situation
>Can you see your arm?
>Yes
Good, Proceed to step 2.
>No
All hope is lost. Just set it to f2.8 1/15 and hope for the bleedin' best.

Step 2: Rangefinding and scouting
>hold out your arm in front of you.
>Is the subject farther than your arm?
>Yes
Move lens focusing ring to the right.
>no
hmmmm
>can you safely elbow your target?
>Yes
Move it about the middle to left
>No
move it all the way to the fucking left

Step 3: calculating required 24mm eqv depth of field and available light
>do you have a flash?
>Yes
Set flash to mid/low power, set aperture to f8/11. Blast that mother.
>No
All hope is lost. Revert back to step 1 and answer no.

The closest Yodobashi camera or Litanies camera will surely have them. Yodobashi will probably have a better selection depending on what you're looking for. Otherwise you could always order what you want off Amazon.jp and have it sent to her address in Japan. Shipping is often super cheap or even free.

thanks for the information
I do actually shoot mostly in portrait which sounds like a good thing with the ga645.
from what I hear about lenses though the GA645 lenses are pretty great.. only problem is I've searched online for some shots taken with a ga645 and there's only a handful that are interesting and obviously medium format.. but I suppose lots of people don't know what they're doing.

I think you're thinking of the T50. The T70 had shutter priority and full manual. Also had a partial meter (11%) for taking readings. Not quite as good as a real spot meter, but better than just relying on center weighted all the time.

I meant the T70.
"Having Manual" doesn't make a camera nice to use.
You need to peer through the viewfinder and see if a number is flashing or not to meter? And make sure you're holding that button down the whole time, or the viewfinder "display" will go away. Then look again on top of the cam to see what shutter speed it's on. Then there's no exposure comp. It's a fucking debacle. If you have to use that camera, the program is far and away the least painful.
The 3 options, for tele, normal and wide, are even better than most modern cams, as you can basically make the cam bias towards preferencing shutter speed or preferencing DOF.

IMO not when you're shooting a SLR - a 645 neg is already big enough. 6×6 or 6×7 is better when you're shooting a rangefinder, because 645 negs are oriented vertically on the film roll and all 645 rangefinders shoot portrait orientation in normal position.
>>
>>2906291
6x7 is about 4x as big as 35mm
6x4.5 is maybe a bit bigger than 2 35mm frames stuck together end to end.
to me, 645 isn't worth it. 6x6 / 6x7 is the way to go.

6x7 is typically counted as being about twice as big as 35mm, in film area. Even the focal length and dof calculations are done with a factor of two. 645 isn't much bigger than one 35mm, but it's enough of a difference. Basically 645 is the best of both worlds, with relatively small camera bodies, fast lenses(for medium format) and easily superior IQ compared to 35mm, with good dof control. If anon is looking for a camera system that is similar in use and design to 35mm cams, then 645 is a good start, but it won't compare to bigger neg cameras, obviously.

So I finally got everything together and last night developed my three first rolls, today I did three more. Everything seems to be going pretty good. Still need to figure out scanning, I have a macro lens and extension rings, and can use gf's old school light table but I guess I need to figure out how to block out ambient light, how to hold the film on the table etc.

Also I just realized I'm gonna need negative sleeves or everything is going to be a huge mess really soon. Where to buy those cheapest (in Europe)? Or do I just suck up and pay the postage fees at Macodirect and buy from there? I guess I could buy some film too while I'm at it but I don't really need it right now.

Until work starts up again I can't really afford a new set of chems so I've been playing with the idea of double exposure in scanner instead of developing the rolls I shot recently. I'm taking random negs just to test and see if it works anything like a real, in camera double exposure.

So far it seems like it only works if you pair an extremely contrasty neg with very few mid tones, and a regular neg. Setting the scanner from the default exposure (100%) to 200 made a big difference. Pic related, you can just sort of see a skyline of buildings upside down coming in from the left. I wasn't expecting anything workable but it seems like it might be worth playing with, it might work better with proper analog printing.

E6 = 630Â¥/roll

>>
>>2907572
Yeah something like that. ID-11 is £6.99 for a litre, I've seen D76 for £9.99 for 3.8 litres (seems too good to be true almost), plus a litre of fixer which online is something like 10 or 15 quid. For reference £10 is about 13 US dollars.

I have the money, it's more that there are more appropriate things to spend it on right now. When work kicks off in September I'll be able to get back in.
>>
>>2907746
Yeah, pretty standard. Lots of photo "labs" around that aren't really labs, but places that do enlargements and photo album type stuff. Many of them will send your film tons Fuji developer for around those prices give or take 100Â¥. When I lived in Kyoto I went to a major Yodobashi camera and paid those same prices.

I'm going to be taking advantage of the cheap E6 processing for the rest of my time here. C41 is actually a tad more expensive here than what I used to pay in Canada.
>>
>>2907752
6×4.5 is plenty even for mural size prints. Especially if you shoot Arcos or some other extremely fine grained film. Don't forget that size and weight are also factors.

depends on what you want to do. If you want to make large prints, you probably need to DSLR scan but for general purposes (social media, /p/, flickr etc.) I quite like the results. Here's a B&W shot I scanned today

Do you have any tips, or a technique you follow? Have a V600, but have yet to get decent results from it. I usually just pay an extra $5 when developing film so medium res scans. Thinking of selling the scanner, but might keep it unless I want to make higher res scans if I decide to make some prints down the road.

Alright, so since this seems to be DSLR scanning central as well, I'm gonna ask a couple of questions as my last post didn't really get noticed.

I've got a camera, a macro lens, extension rings, a tripod and an old school light(ing?) table. Also a retina screen iPad if that's better. And of course, about 10 rolls of both medium format and 35mm I want to scan, and I'm about to develop more. Do I still need to get something for good results? Diffusion material, something to lay on top/under the film? Also is having ambient light in the room with this kind of setup going to cause me any trouble?

Is there a black and white film that looks good without pushing?

I can't believe I didn't think of this before. You just scrape off or add to change the ISO that automatic exposure film cameras read.

Huh. Cool.

It's better with a diffused flash rather than using an iPad etc. Get a sheet of opal acrylic and shoot a flashgun at 1/128 through that. Your camera should be at around f8 1/125 and the lowest ISO. Shoot RAW obviously.

Portra 400 and just overexpose it if you want to go lower on the ISO, it's great even at 100. From what I've seen, I don't really like the skin tones (for white people) with Ektar. Portra is a lot better in that regard and also very versatile.

>>2908369

You can also tape over if you want to go slower. I use both all the time with my only DX reading cameras like Mju I and II.

OK getting some Portra 400 in 35mm, and Portra 160 in 120mm, see how we go.
Agree with Ektar though, too orange/pink for skin tones, great for architectural stuff though.

I run a semi photography based magazine with my partner and Kodak is offering us some film to review so thought I'd ask.

I understand you don't get it. I've shot a load of Portra 160, but I prefer Portra 400 even if I shoot it at 100. Subjective stuff, you know. For speed I'd rather go straight to Portra 800, I like the 400 most at least a little overexposed.

>Is an x-ray film protector worth it for $15?

I remember reading somewhere that those scanners are really useless. I never had film ruined by scanners (even 1600 ISO), but I usually just ask them to hand check it so it doesn't have to go through the scanner. On around 15 flights, I only had my film go through a scanner once. Just make sure that you arrive there early so you don't have to rush through security and keep your film on top of your carry on luggage, ideally in a ziplock bag or something

sorry for the late reply. I feel like it works a lot lot better for MF than for 35mm. You can of course scan 35mm but the results are meh (don't have pictures on this PC right now, will post some examples when I get home).

As far as the scanning process goes, I usually just load the film, wipe down the scanning section with a microfibre cloth, use condensed air on the emulsion site and flip it over quickly (so the dust coming from the air doesn't settle on that side), put the film down, use compressed air on the other side of the film and that's it.

As for the scanning, I use professional mode 16bit greyscale (for B&W) or 48bit color (for color negatives), 2400 dpi, do a preview scan, adjust the highlights/shadows/blacks if necessary, check dust removal to medium (high for 35mm) and scan+export as .tiff files.

I own a V550 which is pretty much the same. I'd get rid of my flatbed entirely if it wasn't for my xpan/bronica. As much as I hate to admit it. You're better off DSLR scanning/using a dedicated option like a plustek/pakon etc for standard 135 negs.

The biggest thing you need to do to get good scans is to understand the limitations of the scanner. The best advice I'd give for scanning 135 on it is to not exceed the optical DPI when scanning and to downscale when possible. Although the scanner states it's 6400 DPI, it's really a bit closer to 1600 DPI in terms of resolving power. I personally scan at 3200 DPI and downscale to 1600 in PS.
I usually don't use the auto exposure results from the scanner/it's crops. Instead I select the frames manually. I usually scan with dust removal/ICE etc all turned off and adjust in photoshop. Alex has an amazing guide he wrote on his site that should help you get the best colour out of your scanner. http://www.alexburkephoto.com/blog/2013/06/02/scanning-and-editing-color-negative-film

Rotate it 90 degrees clockwise for a start friend :)

EI refers to the speed you metered the film at.
The development times are all given for chemicals at 20 degrees C.
Pick your developer, which in your case is Rodinal R09, and pick which dilution you'll be using. Either 1 part rodinal to 25 parts water, or 1 part rodinal to 50 parts water.
Go along in that row until you find what speed you metered at, so if you metered at 400, in a 1:25 dilution your development time is six minutes (with a proper agitation routine).

So to read the table pick your developer and dilution, then read across to find the appropriate development time for the speed you metered at.

Good luck!
There's also a new fim thread over here: >>2908966

Then at the bottom it says to fix for 2 to 5 minutes.
>>
>>2910681
thank you!! (btw I posted the pic from my phone and it auto rotated like that...)

No problem!

That looks like Ilford Pan 400? It doesn't have a fact sheet but if you read the one for Ilford HP5 it's not too far off. Then read the tech sheet for Ilford powder devs. The specifics won't be relevant but they explain everything like how to measure your chemicals, how to agitate, how to develop, it makes it all very simple. Much better than most blog articles.

I've shot seven rolls of it, I like it! Pushed it to 800 twice. Decent emulsion, I hope you get some good photos out of it!
