I guess there is some technique and gear plus software operating behind getting shots as you want them.
But it varies with what you do.
For example, if you want to do studio shots of people. It could easily be that preparations with makeup, studio lighting and stuff plus post work with software are the harder parts, and operating your camera extremely easy (if it's a suitable enough camera).
There are a bunch of gear and techniques behind this, but it usually has not THAT much to do with a "Nikon D7100" beyond knowing the settings and choosing somewhat obviously adequate ones.

I've heard that a good way to get the right focus is to get your cameras, sit where you plan to be, and focus on the tripod head lock that focus, put the camera back on the tripod and sit back in the same place. Now you should have focused on the exact distance between you and the camera.
