I recently bought a Bronica SQ-A, here's a bunch of snapshits I've made with it. Composing squares has been a fun little challenge, I hope I did alright.

Comments and critiques are always appreciated. Rectangles need not apply.

That's all. EXIF is Bronica SQ-A with 50mm or 80mm lenses, mostly T-Max 400 and Tri-X 400 with a little bit of Delta 100, Acros 100, and Arista EDU 400 because I've been sampling different films.

Best in the thread imo. Your use of lens flares is nice, can you see that shit in the WLF or are they just happy accidents? Anyway nice job and keep shooting. What dev you use for these films?

You generally can't see it in the WLF/Prism.

>>2894430
Thanks anon. I couldn't see the flares and in fact I had no idea how bad the flaring would be from these lenses because I'm new to this camera, turns out they're pretty nice looking usually. I can barely see shit in the waist finder, honestly, a bunch of the photos ended up tilted or framed slightly wrong, but I'm getting used to it.

I use HC-110 to develop everything because I'm lazy and it's convenient, usually B or E dilution depending on film speed and how much contrast I want. Unfortunately that developer seems to be pretty grainy with T-Max and some of the other films I tried so I think I'll be mostly sticking to Tri-X and Acros like I do with 35mm.
>>
>>2894541
>a bunch of the photos ended up tilted or framed slightly wrong
Have you considered the speed grip or prism? Both together add a considerable weight but help greatly with framing.
>>
>>2894547
I bought both a speed grip and a 90 degree prism, but since I was on a road trip and doing some hiking I decided to stick to the WLF. Hopefully this weekend I'll try to do some portraits or something and I'll use the prism finder because it's enormous and heavy but I was pretty blown away with how big and easy to focus the image is.
>>
>>2894541
You should give Xtol a try if you want to get low grain and high sharpness from almost any film. It's powdered, but it's practically magic.

I'm not sure I'm as happy with this roll, maybe I should've developed all of the rolls and then chosen photos because this same location has been dragged on too long now. Also I think the ISO 400 films just looked better. One more roll of Tri-X remaining, maybe I'll get to it tomorrow.

two things:
1) Why the B&W?
Not that I'm against it, but for most of the shots ITT it seems that this only detracts from the photos. Photos such as >>2894057 >>2894060 >>2894078 are all okay, but most of the scenes have just become muddled due to the lack of colour and contrast.

2) there are some nice shots here, but most seem poorly composed. That being said, I imagine it would take some time getting used to framing a scene in a square using MF.

Keep at it though. looking forward to watching you get better at it
>>
I feel like you've used the light effectively in these shots.
>>2894067
>>2894069
>>2894073
That said, they're all pretty boring though.
As phonepleb said, square comp is easy to suck at, but also difficult to properly appreciate on a screen.
I get a strong impression that you're too far away from almost everything you're trying to photograph.
Maybe try a wider lense and moving in more.
>>
>>2894541
>I can barely see shit in the waist finder, honestly, a bunch of the photos ended up tilted or framed slightly wrong, but I'm getting used to it.

That's weird, my Bronica's WLF is bright enough to the point it only becomes a problem when shooting at night without artificial lights in the frame. Is it dirty?

Also, in regards to your comment on tilt/off compositions. That's probably partially due to everything being mirrored in the WLF. Once you get the hang of the backwardness you're issues with tilt and composition blunders will disappear.
>>
>>2894057
really amazing, streetsigns on the bottom left are a bit distracting though. Not much to be done there if you aren't ready to tear them down though I guess
>>2894060
noice
>>2894062
I don't dislike it. The subject matter is a bit bland, but the composition is interesting
>>2894064
overused comp, really warrants an interesting subject to work well
>>2894067
>>2894071
meh, less details on the back would've helped
>>2894073
>>2894074
pretty rad, the second one distinctly reminds me off giaocomelli
>>2896406
the sunflare is really distracting from the subject in this one imo
>>
>>2894057
this one's the really one I like from this thread

>>2894076
this one could've been nice if the people had been better framed, maybe more to the right

keep trying though, these show promise. the processing is great, maybe a little too high contrast in some
>>
>>2896423
I've never really shot color film, I'd have to buy chemicals for it or pay a lab to do it and I'd have to deal with learning to scan and color correct it which seems a lot more difficult. And I think that being able to make wet prints is one of the big reasons I shoot film, if I shot color I wouldn't be able to print it so I would only ever have digital scans of my color photos and then what's the point of doing that over just shooting digital in the first place? I do really like the look of a lot of color films, though.

If the photos are muddled it's certainly my fault and not the medium's fault because there are obviously lots of excellent black and white photos out there.

Composing squares is still pretty hard, too as you and others have pointed out. I also want to try shooting 6x6 but with the intent to crop to 4:5, that might be my next little project.

>>2896582
At first I thought you wrote Giacometti and I was really trying to figure out how my photos look like sculptures of walking figures, I figured it out eventually though. I've seen a few of Giacomelli's photos before but I never knew the name so thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Tbh this second set isn't quite as good as the first.

>>2896406
This one is nice, again the flare is cool but don't go way overboard and try to excite that in every shot. The people are a cool detail, but they're just too small. In the thumbnail they just look like bumps.

>>2896409
This one has some nice texture.
The others are really kinda plain.

As for your statement about your film choice, this is Acros, a tabular grain film. (hence the term "Neopan") It's like Tmax and Delta, very sharp, very fine grain, but less contrasty. Tri-X has a traditional grain structure and has a different contrast curve, it lends itself to the nice rich tones people associate with it. the ISO doesn't mean too much, it's just the way each film is designed.

>>2896611
>And I think that being able to make wet prints is one of the big reasons I shoot film

If you haven't already made wet prints, I highly recommend it. If you have, but haven't made medium format prints, trust me when I say it's like a whole new world. The quality is amazing.

As others said please keep going and definitely make the square work for you. You can make some really unique stuff that normal aspects can't quite achieve.

If it's your cup of tea, you might find this book inspirational, pic related. He shoots all squares mostly, the book is all square stuff, it's awesome. You can check out most of it online if you don't want to shell out for the book.

it is really good, and definitely worth 80, but yea the shipping is moronic. I almost didn't buy it, but I mean, it's signed and limited and all that, I'm autistic for that shit. >>
>>2896652
Oh man, just bought this. Thanks for the rec.

OP composing in square takes some getting used to. Youve done a good job with some of these. Rule of thirds becomes less exaggerated and centered compositions tend to work more often when compared to 35mm. Be wary of smashing the subject close to the edge of the frame, and if you you'll probably need something on the opposite edge to balance it out. Symmetry in terms of weight is always a good thing to pay attention to.

I have a question, too. In several photos on this last roll I saw a bunch of these round out of focus dark spots, this photo seems to have them the worst along the left edge, this is the original raw scan. It looks like digital sensor dust, but obviously it's not that. Is it dust on the scanner glass or air bubbles from poor agitation during developing or what could it be?

Dude, those are fucking birds

Could be fogging/webbing/dust in the lens. Pretty common for older cameras

You'd see that in the negative, take a loupe to it.
if it's not in the negative, you'll know its your scanner

ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING

just like all MF bokeh :^)
>>2898530
If you can't see it on the neg, it could be the scanner usually with the neg touching the glass.

if the left edge was on the top/bottom in the tank, i believe this may be improper dev or fixing (sometimes the reels like slipping upwards during agitation)

Do you use a light meter or have the prism finder? I've had trouble in the past keeping the lighting correct in mf but you seen to have done a good job.

Also, tripod or no tripod?

No tripod for these, fuck if I'm going to hike with a tripod strapped to my back. It was pretty sunny anyway and I mostly shot ISO 400 film so most of the photos were probably around f/8 or f/11 and 1/250. When it gets a little dark you can lock up the mirror and get away with much slower shutter speeds, too.

I meter with a really shitty cell phone app most of the time, or if I have my GR with me I meter with that. I've gotten used to it enough that I don't have to meter every single photo, I usually just check it when I first see a scene and then if the lighting changes drastically. As long as you're reasonably close it really doesn't need to be super accurate, and if you're not sure just overexpose a bit.
