I always love seeing idiots who are completely out of touch try to give advice on social media marketing.

I have 12.6k followers and only about 600 something pictures posted. I follow about 650 people, and I only unfollow a very small amount if their content changes drastically. Never have I used Follow4Follow, purchased followers, or any of the other ultra-faggy techniques you just mentioned.

You're showing your ignorance again. 10% engagement would be horrible for an account with <500 followers, but as an account grows, the engagement naturally shrinks. Look at any of the big accounts, like Calsnape, Jordan Herschel, Scott Kranz, OurPlanetDaily etc. They're all down near 1%-5% engagement.

Is there any way to get real followers on Instagram. Whenever I post a photo I got 3-6 followers but next day I lose 2-5 followers that is so weird. Because of that I stopped using Instagram. Well then I guess it just depends on your definition of fake. If you mean people who just stopped using IG, then sure. If you mean people who only check in once a week or once a month, then also sure. Those people don't click like on hardly anything because they don't use the app much, but they DO follow people. In fact, people like that are way more likely to follow huge accounts for nice pictures, because they aren't on there for their friends. Casual users are attracted to the big accounts because they're easier to find, they aren't using IG to seek out the super gnarly, niche photography like one of us /p/haggots.

So if that's what you mean by fake, then ok.

Also, definitely have seen robots follow me. If I see it I block them, but I sure af haven't seen every single one of my 12,700 followers, so some slip the cracks. That's just life on the internet, don't know what to tell ya. Doesn't mean that people go out and SEEK fake followers.

3 tips on gaining followers

1. Get a niche and stick to it. Nobody wants to go to a page and see random shit. If someone can't see within 2 seconds what you "do" (eg fitness, urban photography) you're doing it wrong.

2. Use relevant hashtags with 100k-750k posts. Too big and you'll get drowned out in new posts, too little and nobody will see it.

3. Post consistently and quality. Ideally, you should be posting 1-2 high quality photo of whatever your niche is at least once a day for optimal growth

Follow this and you'll hit the 1k mark if you stick at it. Once you get past 1k, getting followers is alot easier. Get big enough on Instagram you can earn money through paid shoutouts. Rule of thumb for that is (followers/1000) meaning that if you have 75k real followers, you can charge approx. $75 per shoutout

Wow, neither of these are true at all.
Generally followers are what get you followers. "Quality" by way of meaning "good photography" does nothing to get you engagement. The qualities that tend to get you the most engagement are a nice set of tits or ass. After that, it's a popular person in the image. Then, some bullshit inspirational something. Clever hashtag work counts for a decent amount as well. None of this equates to, or can be equated to "good photography" in any reasonable definition of the phrase.

Now one might be able to make a case for engagement from a specific, knowledgable subset of users, but even that doesn't equate to someone making good photographs because we can't know that when the knowledgeable subset engages that they do so with the intention to show that they believe a piece is "good".

You're the one that's obsessed with engagement rates. I hardly bother with social media because my business comes through word of mouth. Social media's only really important in larger markets and once I moved to a middle sized market, it quickly became a waste of my time. The fact of the matter is that a like means essentially nothing. A comment means slightly more, but still closer to nothing than something, and a follow means less than either.

I use Lightroom/Photoshop in tandem. A lot of the processing is done in LR but I use PS for adjustment layers.

Have been shooting with various Android phones with mixed results. I just got an LX100 to step up my low light game.

I'd welcome any feedback or follows, of course. The learning curve for DSLRs is exciting but steep. I did not appreciate how much work my phone's software was doing.

Instagram intrigues me, I used it for a bit as a kind of travelogue thing when I was on holiday but without great sights to shoot I just turned it into a kind of fashion blog, and haven't used it in ages now.

I'm torn between the idea of using it as a vehicle for professional self-promotion (filmmaker), a genuine medium of connecting with friends or perhaps making new friends, and as a kind of process based art project: a sort of non-finite documentation of incidental sources of inspiration.

...people seem to like when I wear kooky-stylish outfits.

How do you approach it? Do you have a conscious approach?
