Hey everyone! I'm dating a wonderful girl who is going to school for professional photography. Her birthday is coming up and I want to surprise her with a macro lens. I myself know how to take a decent photo, but I'm completely new to buying cameras or other equipment. She has a Nikon D610, and any recommendations or advice is greatly appreciated.
Aside from the request, I'm gonna open the thread up to a general discussion about macro and/or telephoto lenses: pros and cons, favorites, stories, etc.. Pictures of either extreme are encouraged. I don't own a macro lens, so my pic's as close as I can get while maintaining quality.

>I myself know how to take a decent photo,
This reads really weird in the middle of all that. Like those context exercises in primary school where you have to identify the sentence that doesn't belong.

She's not dating me for my English prowess, or lack thereof.

Why would someone who is
>going to school for professional photography
need a macro lens?
They are fun for two weeks and won't be used ever again unless macro subjects are your hobby. What does your girl shoot for a living?
She prefers nature shots, but recognizes that a more steady paycheck comes from portraits and people. I'm just trying to encourage her hobbies.
Sorry I'm terrible at all this. First time starting a thread, and my first time buying specifics for a profession other than my own. Just kind of awkwardly stumbling my way through this.
If someone needs me to clarify anything or get more specific info, I'll do my best.

Nikkor 105mm 2.8 g or d
G has VR but is much more expensive and is made of plastic.
D doesn't have VR but is build like a tank.
Both can do 1:1.
You could also buy the 60mm 2.8 G or D, but IMO with 60mm you will need to be way too close to the subject when doing 1:1 macro shots.

I personally own the Sigma 105mm with HSM and OS and I'm really happy with it. It gives really crisp focus, but might be a little short on a full frame sensor. I own a DX camera myself, so it might be better with a 150 or 180 or maybe a 200mm macro instead.
I haven't tried Nikon's own 105mm, but I know that it is onl marginally better than the one I own, and double the price. The Sigma 150 and 180 are superb as well with little chromatic abberation and little to no distortion. It has more falloff, though, but on a macro lens that isn't really a big issue since the background is blurry anyways and can be easily corrected in post.
If she wants only a macro lens the 200mm would be the best bet, though. I went for the 105 since it can also be used with portraits without issues.
Pic related is a photo from my sigma 105mm.

Would be better to just buy a teleconverter.
>>2891091
Yes, that would probably be better. Then a 105mm could be used for both portraits and narrow macro shots. But OP would also have to buy more stuff.

Shouldn't more of the fly be in focus?
