Hey /p/ so I'm going on a trip to Australia and I'm planning on doing scuba diving and I really wanna get some good underwater shots and videos but I dont want to have to pay $1000+ just to get underwater housing and I dont trust to put my (fairly expensive) dslr in a $30 camera bag.
What should I do?
Are there any good waterproof cameras out there that arent shitty $100 video cameras?
Where could I buy solid underwater housing for a decent price?
Please help. Thanks in advance

Not getting a lot of feedback here, Anon. No luck finding online reviews? I always get ads then have to ask a specialist anyway.

if youre trying to stay cheap its better to go mirrorless. Sony nex's /a6000s are what I normally use but olympus is a good way to go too.

Theres a cheaper line of housings by a company called neewer, you can find them for a variety of cameras on amazon for ~200 bucks. add that to a sony nex 5/6/7 for 200 to 500 bucks and you have a decent rig for like half a grand. Better to lose a 150 dollar camera than your slr.

If you're planning on taking it anywhere past 30 feet you'll need some external lights too, as it gets pretty difficult even with those cameras really good low-light handling.(if visibility is good you might be able to get away with no flash if you use the overhead light properly) Sea and sea makes strobes you can trigger with on camera flash and a fiber optic, for around 300.

Honestly though anon the newer gopros take great video and stills are good too provided youre not making large prints or anything.

A local shopowner who I am close with is an avid diver and underwater photographer. He showed me his rig, and it's intense. Rigid housing for a full size SLR with a fast wide zoom in it and both strobe and continuous light options.

He's done some insanely cool stuff - but it's expensive. He rents or borrows from friends.

You might be better served chatting with local dive shops or contacting bloggers, etc. that specifically focus on underwater stuff. Based on what you're doing you may need lighting and that gets complicated.

For snapshots at snorkel depths, a point and shoot underwater camera will get you ok but disappointing vacation shots. I have a little Sony P&S.
