>Le wacky un-level camera angle :*)
This thread and the cliche of wanting to avoid cliches as I associate it with a high school mentality and approach of worrying about impressions over nuanced detail. Cliches are excellent when pulled off well. It's the pack of an ability to pull it off or even tell when others do that makes the cliche so unapproachable to the newfags
>>2888972
Graffiti, abandoned and dilapidated buildings, shots outside a broken window, the homeless, old storefront signs against a chipped brick wall, incandescent shots of Italian food or kitchen decor on a wooden cutting board, the homeless, urban crap like subways or elevated train tracks and rooftop water towers. Of course 90s style double exposures of a dark hotel room with an old metal fan and a cigarette-smoking pixie chick wearing thickrimmed sunglasses illuminated by a neon sign.
>>2889060
You forgot the homeless.
>>2889060
>Of course 90s style double exposures of a dark hotel room with an old metal fan and a cigarette-smoking pixie chick wearing thickrimmed sunglasses illuminated by a neon sign.
Uhhh, what? I don't think I've ever seen a photo like that, let alone so many that it's a cliche.
>>2889067
Oh yeah and the homeless...oh shit I almost forgot...the homeless.
>>2889088
Ok, its called hyperbole. I'm talking about vaporware shit like pic related that I see everywhere that's held up like high art or the epitome of film photography.

>Cliches are excellent when pulled off well
nah, even if they're aesthetically pleasing they will come off as boring. no way around it. the only reason old master photographers get away with it is because when you look at it from a historical perspective, the cliches weren't as popular back then, and in many cases the artists CREATED the cliche
>>2889311
Nah, this is what young creatives think before they get past their 100th creation

what did he mean by this?
So, basically every type of photograph is cliche.
>>2889335
To be innovative, is to fully understand and master tradition. Then you can use what you have learned to create new ideas; otherwise its not really innovation.

But thats a very nice one
>>2889423
But it seems to have been accurate :^)
The street photography meme.
>>2889454
Whats wrong with street photography?
>>2889480
Because every Tom, Dick and Harry can take pictures on the street, ad vsco, and call it street photography. Look at Eric Kim, without his filters it would be snapshit central.
>>2889454
I used to do street photography but stopped a year or so back because of how pointless it began to feel. Whenever I tried to justify it to myself, I'd always end up at "but I'm exploring what it means to be human..." and that's when I realize the genre's been gutted. I guess it was on me to not find a direction to go with it, but it made me sick to see so many of my "peers" posting soulless photos of homeless people, people's backs, people looking surprised at the camera, people on bicycles, etc. just go on Flickr, and you'll understand why I rage-quit.
Albeit landscape photography has even more annoying cunts, basing my intent and style on what The New Topographics was about has given me a fresh, new direction.

This is the reason the US is still a shithole. You expanded too fast, and except for your coastal cities, you're basically living in the 90s with your checks, minimum wage and tipping/gratuities

NEVER. EVER. use a Dutch tilt outside of film for mise en scene reasons. I have an Indian friend who does this all the time and wonders why noone likes his photos
>>2889516
Yeah, but these snide opinions that you keep to yourself to be thrown out anonymously online to vent your frustrations are in no way, shape, or form related to the social alienation and competition that you feel from those you define as your friends.
>>2889495
I'm currently trying to pursue documentary photography and cinematography. Street photography has really helped me pretty much banish my social anxiety with strangers and fear of sketchy places.
I definitely agree that most street photography I see is cancer. But like most of these tropes and cliches its interesting to find your voice and see what you can bring to the table.
>>2889520
Dutch angle is shit, anyone educated on the subject of photography/composition will laugh in your face for defending it. Prove me wrong.
>>2889520
Wow, thats pretty dark from someone anonymous. I may browse 4chan, but I'm anything but a /b/tard. I called him a friend the same way you call that coworker you almost never speak to is a friend. We talk sometimes, but he is so negative and unwilling to change its hard to hang out with him. Indian culture as a whole seems to grate against me, the way you can barely know each other and they feel like its okay to ask big favors
>tfw the worst faggot meme/cliche of them all has not yet been posted
>>2889530
>I called him a friend the same way you call that coworker you almost never speak to is a friend.
I don't do that. That's so weird that you do that. Is it because you don't have any real friends to use the word on?
Creepy, bruv.

for most people on here its more a coopted sense of what they think being an artist is (being unique)
"I dont like cliche photography" is emphatically the quote of a person who looks at photographs not individually, but as a merit badge to their lacking personality.
It's no coincidence this thread seems to be written by mostly highschool age folks. You grow out of these ideas and idealistic notions...or find another passion or job after realizing photography isn't a merit badge that will solve your autism.

It's not hard to create original referential artwork, to reapproach the already beaten path. You just have to get over yourself and learn some individual photographs rather than a list of cliches that make you feel "above it"
Why not find a project in your area long abandoned, and make your own followup to it from your own point in time and visual perspective?

Indeed, I think that many people take cliche pictures because they recognize the general aesthetic principles that make a picture interesting. The fact that these principles are recognizable by an amateur are what make them cliches in the first place. However, if a picture is taken in a way that is original and interesting then it doesn't matter if it is cliche or not.
