The grid is a byproduct of resizing algorithms, the low grain xpro2 setting being compressed by the resize, and to me stacking exposures with the eraser tool.

It really does more to obliterate contrast than to increase it, but you're allowed to think whatever you like.
The photo without flash would be silhouettes of brush and a fence with little definition owing to light loss.
I understand not liking the photo, but flash ain't really the reason why. Sometimes you can simply not like something without looking to objectively identify why that is. Looks are feels.

As I suspected, you have absolutely no understanding of what DR settings do, as you've been cucked by your adopted crusade against the dreaded jpeg format so readily that you never even took a moment to learn the methodologies of your enemy.
The point of shooting expanded DR jpegs on a Fuji is to *not* throw away a stop of DR. 800 iso, 400% dr wipes the floor with iso 200, dr 100% straight out of the camera. What I am theoretically sacrificing is not dynamic range, it is incremental sharpness upon the alter *to* dynamic range.

Their raw files are more or less identical. DR settings cause raw files to underexpose for latitude. One setting simply gives me a very usable jpeg the moment I take the shot.

Shooting jpegs on an Xpro2 or XT2 is more or less shooting film, with a much broader level of control over minute-to-minute decisions, and the range of the in-camera converter in these newer cameras is rather obscenely useful.

The only real benefit shooting film has over this is the *lack* of intent, the element of surprise, "lomography" as it were.
Fuji's have a directional pad on the back, a function button on the top, and a function button on the front. I have mine set up so that the custom profiles for the camera are 4 color profiles, varying from -2/-2 highlights and shadows (for very low contrast, and the highest apparent DR) to +4/+4 (for very high contrast, for example the rain cloud), and then 3 more settings of the same for Acros/B&W.
These custom profiles are available in a drop-down menu that I have bound to my left arrow. My right arrow is film simulation, should I need to change the filter color of the B&W sim, or should I desire to shoot Velvia or something (I typically shoot Classic Chrome), the down arrow is white balance.
I've also generally got the iso dial set to Automatic, and in the settings for auto-iso (which I have bound to the top function button) I have 3 profiles, 800 iso minimum to 800 iso maximum, 3200 minimum to 3200 maximum, and 800 minimum to 12800 maximum. This lets me bypass the iso dial when I don't want to be locked into it.
With the camera set up this way, and with the fact that each of those menus (film simulation, white balance, custom profiles) show as image previews while in the dropdowns, allows for incredibly quick tuning of jpeg controls to what you want or close enough to what you want (should you, say, choose to raise shadows 2 stops from +4 to +2 while leaving the highlights at +4 or something)

This is ironic because Canon cameras noise profiles tend to be the most prone to the artifacts discussed earlier in this thread. Anyone that ever uploaded to instagram from a DSLR before they increased the image size and altered their resizing algorithm has probably encountered a similar grid-like appearance before.
I would agree however that when my photos are riddled with artifacts owing to having been posted from my phone, your photos do indeed win out on the technical detail of not being covered in a grid.
I would suggest finding clouds that are strong subjects themselves if you want to do "that type of picture" tho. I was photographing a strong rain column. I'm not sure what you were attempting to photograph, but your most prominent subject is blurry grass tops. :^)
