Whatever difficulty you faced taking the photo doesn't matter to me. It only matters that it's there, it's crooked, and it's distracting from an otherwise nicely composed photo.

Yeah, that worked. Look at those side by side. Be mindful of compression at any stage in the file-handling process when you're working with smooth gradients. I said lower the res to keep filesize small, in case that was ambiguous. I don't think it makes too much of a difference on how gradients are rendered.

That's valid, and if that was what the shooter was trying to represent, they succeeded. The more I spend time with this pic... there is a lot to like about it. The girl splits the picture between the cool and warm tones. And maybe her gaze does work...it merges with all of the other horizontals off frame. Having shot a fair amount of skating, this is a good shot.
personally would've moved further right to have the skater against the sky not the trees.
also how the board is oriented is super important to me. like i always try to have it at the apex of the trick (upside down in the case of kick/heel flips, board perpendicular to rail for board/lip slides etc)
lastly 800 seems like a little high. it's way granier than it needs to be. but that might be your style.

Time for some of my recent sailing shots. The quality of them isn't great since I derped with my shutter speed on all of them... I underestimated the shutter speed I needed to get sharp shots. I was on a boat bouncing up and down with a 450mm focal length (actually 300mm but 1.5x crop factor).

Thanks for the feedback. She was definitely too far right but it's so crowded in gion I was lucky to be able to have a clear shot at all.

I got a good deal on a barely used one. It's pricey if you buy new, but I really love it so far. I'm a tall guy, and being free to focus+snap with the touchscreen from waistlevel has completely changed how I shoot quick stuff while I'm walking home or whatever.

Maybe you got the same phenomenon on Flickr and Instagram too, but I know that 500px is basically the biggest circlejerk on the internet.

That's a Fibonacci spiral crop-overlay. Also called "golden spiral". It's a spiral which gets wider by a factor of "the golden ratio" for each quarter-turn it makes.
For some reason (magic?), humans tend to find things using the golden ratio visually appealing. I think the spiral approximates how your eye naturally tracks when looking at the picture or something.
Arguably the "rule of thirds" is an approximation of the golden spiral. The innermost point of the spiral is at about one third into the picture.
