look at this madman shooting in manual
I think they'd look better if you lifted the mid tones a bit. probably need more contrast
okay composition. I think boring subject matter imo
you've blown out the highlights in some photos of the sky.

What happened to your lens?
A lot of objects. I get that there's an impulse to shoot the things that catch your eye, but I'm not getting much out of pictures of building tops, or a lamp on the street. Likewise for flowers and whatever.
>>2881972
I like the grit of this one, but it's distracting to have the crowd gathered at the bottom, and it seems clear that you just wanted a symmetrical shot of the monument and the people were in the way. Either you've got to isolate that monument to get a clean comp, or you've got to find something to make the crowd the star of the show. As it is it's a touristy snapshit.
The UK's full of people with "ENGLISH" written all over their face with expression, go shoot some people, head outside touristy spots to find some interesting streets, anything.
You're probably never going to find an interesting shot at the eye unless it's someone in the bubbles doing something interesting, I don't like these spindly "abstract" comps because they don't lead to any identifiable subject.

I think i either smacked it on something in the london underground or a girl i was chatting with sat on my bag.
It was a kit lens from 10 years ago so no worries. the bad thing is i only had enough cash to get a more recent kit. anyway i bought a Minolta with a rokkor 50mm so im going to get an adapter for that.

Thank you! I will try to focus on actual subjects and have a more humanist approach
i intend to get into street photography because i am a fan of Robert Frank and HCB but i wasn't taken by the urge to do it in this instance. I tried my hand at it in milan (pic related) and i feel it went ok for a first timer

You need to concentrate on visual language - what are you filling your frame with and, more importantly, WHY.
Your composition seems to be a little all over the place: try to embrace the rule of thirds - place important subject matter approximately 1/3rd of the way into a shot, leaving ample space for a backdrop that helps to explain the context of the shot.
If you wish to impart the subject matter with a sense of space or power - then putting it in the center of the shot can help, especially if the subject extends to the edges of the frame. If the subject is in the center of the shot but does NOT reach to the edges you can create a feeling of isolation, like the subject is detached from its environment, and should be given specific consideration.
Think about how your shots "read". Where the eye should start, and what it should be considering after the main subject.
On the left you can see my version of your shot >>2878382 >>2878384 (same light struts, same bridge)
Notice how the main subject matter is central - but reaches out to the edges of the shot.
I have also placed the main detail of the shot about a third of the way from the edge of shot - it helps to frame the subject.

Wtf were you doing in the elephant? stay away from there, ew, i cant even... unless you're a student, in which case - home sweet home.
>>2883263
I taught myself composition but when I'm out in the field I tend to eschew it or other to consider it entirely. Which is obviously to my detriment- I think I framed things weirdly in order to avoid getting specific objects in the shot that longer in the background.
Don't know anything about this elephant- is it student accom? We stayed at university college digs

I'm goin to reiterate this point because I could do with some advice.
How do I settle the issue of not being able to frame a shot using traditional compositional techniques due to the fact that composition would include unwanted objects in the field of view
So basically, should I always use traditional composition to the detriment of the subject or should I frame it in a strange way to the detriment of the composition??

No one really frames their shots based on composition theory. Instinct comes first, theory is an afterthought.
Any professional that tells you otherwise is lying.
>>2883840
>No one really frames their shots based on composition theory
>theory is an afterthought.
>Any professional that tells you otherwise is lying.
HAHAHAHA are you fucking KIDDING me? You literally know nothing do you?
Being a professional photographer is ALL ABOUT knowing how to compose and communicate with visual cues on the hop. Not just guessing, KNOWING what works. LEARN your fucking visual language, subject placement, aesthetic considerations. If you dont you will just end up with endless threads like THIS ONE, where NOTHING is framed in a narratively conducive manner. Just a splurge of shit imagery with no intention, no cues, nothing. Garbage.
...fucking "instinct"...bringing that bullshit around here.
>>2883824
>I taught myself composition
Well you did a shitty job.
>but when I'm out in the field I tend to eschew it
Theres your problem
>I framed things weirdly in order to avoid getting specific objects in the shot
Well then frame them in a way that compliments the main subject matter - half the skill of being a photographer is being able to improvise and adapt to get the shot.
>>2883883
Learning theory and applying theory are not one and the same. How do you know I did a shitty job of learning? Telling me did a shitty job of applying it is a fair criticism though

Because you "eschew" everything you learned, bitch, that's why all of your shots look like somebody gave Stevie Wonder a disposable. Apply what you've learned, otherwise I ain't gonna believe you've learned shit.
