Try to do a composite with a longer lower ISO shot of the landscape and a separate shot for the sky, then combine them in photoshop.
This way the landscape will be mouch more clear and much less noisy while the starscape will have no trailing. You can process the starscape separately to remove noise from the black sky but leave the brighter parts, stars, clusters and nebulae brighter.
>>
>>2875392
I'm a sucker for Andromeda. It's just a damn good looking galaxy.

>>2875393
This is a rad shot. Generally, I don't think of astro stuff as being heavy on composition, but this has a nice balance to it.
>>
This thread makes me hate living in the part of the country I do during the summer. It's just so damn hazy all the time. Most nights, there's too much cloud cover to do anything, and even if it's not mostly cloudy, it's just a hazy soup with shitty air.
>>
>>2877522
Astrophotography season is autumn and winter, that is when the air is mostly still and clear.
Summer is an off-season for astro but rarely there are a few usable nights. Even then the air is shimmering too much.
>>
>>2877537
There is no "season"
Stop trying to simplify it that much. Watch your air humidity and cloud cover and you can regularly shoot in the summer.

Winter typically shows the worst face of the milky way by the way. The best view of the eye is july-august
>>
>>2877461
ik but I dont have a fast lens, you cant tell too much the trails and im fine with it
>>
>>2877711
Try stacking them, use photoshop's average or smart stacking feature. It reduces noise and enhances detail in the milky way. Then you can put it back into the landscape shot.
Most of the starscape shots you see on the internet etc... are made with such composite methods with separate shots for the landscape and stacking many frames for the stars.

Thanks, I haven't been able to get back out west lately and have been kicking myself now that I've figured out that low ISO is better. I have a new D750 body and lens shipping right now, so I'm just trying to figure out what an optimal setup would be. This one here was taken a couple of weeks later but i would like to improve more.

>There is no "season"
There's no universal season for everyone, but depending on your location on the globe there can definitely be seasons that are largely useless. If you live in a tropical or subtropical climate and you've got a hot, mostly rainy summer season, you're rarely going to have an opportunity for good astrophotography. For example, temperatures were I am have have been mid to upper 30's C (high 90's F) with average humidity 80% or above for the past few weeks. Looking ahead, it looks like get a nice reprieve one day with humidity down as low as 70%!
>>
>>2877546
>There is no "season"

i live in alaska. we literally do not reach nautical twilight during the summer, much less astronomical twilight. for several months astro simply isn't possible.

yes, there are seasons.

Start with the lenses you already own, before buying anything. Download the Stellarium software to see all the objects visible in the night sky, and try to shoot the biggest and brightest nebulae like >>2876162. Summer is great for this because there is plenty of stuff in the milky way, that you can shoot with small focal lenghts.

Then learn about stacking your images (with a software like DeepSkyStacker):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0JSTF8SGi4

is a very nice video introduction to astrophoto and stacking.

The main thing about astrophoto is exposure time. You can look into building a barn-door tracker, or buy a motorized mount (equatorial mount) to increase your exposure time. The goal is to have insane exposure times, to capture all these photons from distant and faint objects.

I would say at least levels and contrast adjustment. If you're at the level, also sharpened layer and curves layer for more contrast, both with a blurred layer mask.

How the fuck? I have a 300mm F5.6 and my lens doesn't seem to be able to actually zoom in far enough to see anything close to this in detail. Does adding an extra 100mm make that much of a difference? If so, would getting a sigma 150-500 F5-6.3 be a good idea? I'm really interested in astrophotography but I always thought you needed a proper telescope to even remotely get pictures like this.
>>
>>2883678
kinda new to astrophotography myself, but I thought longer exposure stacking with noise editing is what makes the best shots not moar zoom
>>
>>2883678
A lot of things in the sky are pretty big. They're just dim. The Andromeda galaxy is three times larger than the full moon, for instance. But you can't see that with your eyes, it's not bright enough, all you can make out even with binoculars is the fuzzy spot at the very center. What you need is to know where they are in advance and have a tracking system that can take long exposures. Which, yes, you then stack. (it's possible to stack the one-second-or-so exposures that you can get without tracking, but this is a bit like chopping down a tree with a knife)

300mm-equivalent is enough focal length for many things. (though not for others. Tiny galaxies and, especially, planets, need something much longer, which means a telescope)
>>
I just picked up the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, the non vc one for 275$, anyone have any experience with this lens for astro?
>>
>>2884543
>275$
Brand new or used? Because you overpayed a whole lot if that's used, you can pick them up for under $200 aud. Anyway yeah I bought one last month, haven't had too much use with it yet but so far the only real problem is corner sharpness at 17mm.
