Is this camera really called the mu-two?
>>2875226
Yep
Kinda funny, the pokemon was released in '96 and the camera in '97
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mewtwo
http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Olympus_mju_II
I've got an xa and mju-ii but my grail is probably a klasse s or a contax t3
I love the rangefinder on the xa but the mju-ii is sharper and so simple to use aside from having to turn the flash off every time you un-clam it
>>2875233
I should have mentioned it might be kinda redundant to get a contax though because I'll probably just end up getting a g1 and that sexy 45/2 planar
>>2875234
nah the g1 is a pig, the viewfinder is terrible
>>2875247
Well I got one at a price I couldn't pass up. Looking through it now and it really isn't that bad
>>2875209
I've tried a few, none of them have hit the spot
My Olympus XA can't focus, half the time the whole frame is out of focus even at narrow apertures (literally the whole frame, not even missed focus). I assume it took a drop at some point. Good when it works, but unreliable.
My Ricoh R1 died. It sort of works, but the lens won't retract. Got one roll through it which turned out fine.
My Oly Mju 1 is okay, exposures are sometimes slightly funky. I don't like how if I'm fudging the DX encoding it won't tell me what speed the meter is using. Haven't dared try it for that reason.
A weatherproof Ricoh GR/Nikon Coolpix A would be my ideal. Pocketable, sharpish prime lens, relatively fast (2.8 is fine), RAW, weatherproof because I work outdoors and it's usually either dusty or raining, one handed operation.
Hoping to see some nice strides in the affordability of good, pocketable compacts.
I like my stylus epic but I hate how it doesn't remember my flash mode. Recently bought a gr1s and it made me but a gr2. Found one used for 450 very excited to use it
Panasonic GM5 with a 15mm f1.7. Body is tiny but the lens is rather big even if it does fit a hoodie pocket, looking to get the 20mm at some point. Mostly use the 15mm on my Olympus M5ii.
leica mini is fun
>>2875209
I secretly hope to get my hands on pic related, but given that I never found film compacts useful, I'm not going to pay for it. And it would sit on my shelf looking sexy rather than seeing any actual use, because I don't see any point in picking a compact over SLR when going out to shoot film.
I used to have the Contax T2, which I found mostly overrated. It's big and clunky for a compact, although built like a tank. Lens performance is mediocre due to extremely bad vignetting and edge blurring at wide apertures. Also the autofocus tended to disagree with me a lot. Traded it in for a mirrorless digital and haven't missed it for a day.
>>2875209
Have this. Copped for 25$ on craigslist. It's fine for taking acceptable snapshots, the auto exposure is pretty decent. If I needed something with more control I have other cameras for that.
Grail is contax T3. Every other compact has some glaring flaw and the T3 gets nearly everything right.
>>2875344
How is the gr1s? I hear the lcd tends to dim and fail, making the camera a brick. Can you get a replacement in third party aftermarket?
>>2875354
The point is, for me at least, is that they stay in your pocket all the time. Cameras like the praised nikon l35af would be useless to me then because they are so large. I'm with you there, If I'm not going to have it in my pocket I might as well take an SLR or a rangefinder.
>>2875364
That's part of the reason why the Contax didn't work for me, it's not pocketable at all and you need a large compact carry pouch for it, for which the only non-retarded attachment point is on the sling of backpack. So in the end I have to carry a backpack around to have a god damn compact camera with me. I guess I could consider my Nettar 518 as a compact, it's what I usually carry around as secondary. Takes very little space when folded up, and as far as I know it sort of was a compact camera of its era.

Luckily I bought mine from a guy in ebay who had no idea what he was doing. Got it for 150 down from 300 and it works fine. The light seal for the film type window was bust as many are on old cameras so I wiped it off and covered it with black tape. I told the guy the foam was rotten and managed to get him to give me a 40 dollar discount.
After a few rolls through I've noticed that the LCD is dying as some cells in the number counter fail to switch to black, for example creating a 5 instead of a 6. This seems to be I my when it powers on though. I'm not sure there are third party lcds out there.
>>2875209
Grail is Hexar AF.
Current most regular carry is the Fuji HD-M.
I believe the lense is the same as used twice in the $3000 Horseman Stereo 3D. It's amazingly sharp and distortion free.
Also manual focus, manual flash and selectable ISO ftw.
I have lots of others too.

Someone is selling me A Fuji DL Super Mini or Fuji Tiara for $85.
Anyone here care to tell me if its a good compact camera?
I can barely find any info about it on the net.
>>2875686
I don't know if it's good or not, but I think you should buy it solely on the basis that it's fucking adorable
>>2875686
It's good go for it
>>2875843
I would think that it should be obvious if one is considering an expensive film p&s they're probably not interested in digital bang for buck.
Personally I'm just waiting to find something really appealing to appear in front of me in a secondhand store or something, at which point I'm going to start farting around with film. Got plenty of digital gear, just want a toy.
>>2875843
Spent 80 on my stylus epic
If you want it now you gotta pay
Also I don't mind spending money on my hobbies especially if I can resell for the same price
Is my Mju II broken?
Getting close things in focus is hit and miss.
>>2875846

>expensive
Lol fuji is among the mid tier to cheap brands. If it's a Leica or a Rollei then probably because it has collectors value. It's a $20 p&s film camera.
>>2875851
>resell for the same price
Keep on dreaming pal. Film will go out in a decade and no one will use your camera. If it's electronic then it probably has no more spare parts.
>muh red dot
It's quick, quiet and has an excellent image quality. The auto focus is always on point, as is the exposure.
The only downside is that it doesn't remember your flash settings if you turn it off and that people on eBay try to get 100EUR for it because of the name, I got mine for 20, just dig a little.
>>2875860
>Film will go out in a decade
It's going to be longer than that but affordable medium and large format digital will kill film
>>2875869
Pic related, Fomapan 400 test film, hence the grain. Sharpness is great for such a small camera, exposure for the dark interior and the very bright exterior as well as the different lightning conditions is flawless.

Lomo LC Wide, sold a rollei 35s to get one.
Used to be Contax T2 as my grail but 28/35/38mm FoV is boring, love the 17mm looks.
Now I want nikon DL 18-50 because its 18mm lens (35mm equiv.) but it's too expensive for the 1" sensor camera just like RX100iv.
>What do you have?
RX100iv, Zenith LCA, Lomo LCW, probably the Nikon DL 18-50 soon.
>What to avoid?
Rollei 35s, it's a mechanical beauty with godlike design but such a shit to use, I was using it with too much missfocus in one roll of film.
Canonet series, don't be tempted by its cheap price, the lens sucks.

I probably wouldn't use them though.
>What do you have?
Two Konica Pops
>What to avoid?
I bought the Pop(s) as a meme and wasn't planning on using them as anything but decoration, but I came to like the fact that other than the flash, no batteries are needed (I have other complete analog ones, but SLRs, not fixed lens compacts).
So, I guess small frame with electronics? since service tends to be more bothersome, they just die, the fucking weird ass batteries are a pain in the ass to find nowadays, etc.

Flea markets started fucking overpricing everything, ebay and craigslist tends to be better nowadays for finds.

My film carry is a Zorki 4k with 50 f/2 and 35 f/2.8
Would like to get an x100s or x100t some day.
>>2878856
Pfft, my Z4s shutter dial is completely fucked. Before it was somewhat messed up and was about one speed off going slower but after the shutter curtain capped and I got it to work again it began to fire at half second intervals at the 1/1000 mark.
If funds allow for it I may just say to hell with it and cop a low end Bessa.
>>2878798
Yeah, it's almost the size of the X100 though and it has a fixed 17mm/24 equiv. lens or something unreasonable like that. Which might be fine for streetshitting, but the 28-112mm 2.0-2.8 on the 10/20/30 is so much more versatile, especially for a travel or vacation camera.
As far as I'm concerned the X30 was a blunder too. I could live with the EVF, although I've come to appreciate OVF. But the fairly substantial increase in body size for no increase in sensor size, as well as the decrease in build quality make it really unattractive.
>>2878510

Yeah, I tried one out side-by-side and it was definitely less solid than the X20 with more plastic. I imagine it's under the guise of weight reduction but it just doesn't feel right, just like the XE-1 and 2.

I've got a Canon SureShot 80u, it's shit
it's a fucking terrible camera all things considered. 38-80mm zoom lens that zooms in steps. At 38mm wide open it's f4.7, at 80mm it's f9 or something fucking awful like that.
it vignettes a lot. the lens is sharp enough at the center. autofocus and exposure are suprisingly very accurate, even at night.
the viewfinder is impossible to look through since it's so small. the camera gives you no indication of what it focuses on so you just sort of have to wing it.
it's got some cool 'hidden' modes, like +/- 1.5 stops, portrait mode, a bunch of flash options and rear-curtain sync for shooting in the dark.
copped it for $5 brand new at a thrift store.
overall it's a pretty quirky camera but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone seriously. takes fun party photos and that's about it

Honestly your only option is the mju ii/ stylus epic. It's the smallest one but it still takes up like all the room in your pocket (can't get thinner than a roll of film after all.
There are other cameras but literally everything is far more expensive. Yashica T4 is similar but a bit larger and a stop slower, and like the olympus is overpriced by 100$ on ebay.
That being said there are plenty of passable cheap 35mm cameras to be had from second hand stores or craigslist. Anything that is from a decent brand with a prime lens would work fine. I picked up my stylus epic for 20$ on craigslist. They are out there.
Go to 35mmc for researching these cameras. He has covered everything worth covering in this market segment at this point on that site, although the prices are probably outdated.
Shooting compact P&S is my preference. Have shot with most of the popular ones over the years. The prices have definitely gone up. Can't quite understand the price for T3's, I don't see how there that much better than a T2.
Luckily have gotten my T2 for $250. Found a Yashica T4 Super at the thrift shop for $4. Got a Stylus Epic for $35 at a flea market.

GR II here. I fell for the meme.
But I love it.
>>2883581
Give me one anon.
>>2883646
How did you buy? They're in an ebay bubble right now
>>2883640
why not?
>>2883646
your lcd will fail. these cameras are all doomed.
>>2883581
I looked through the viewfinder of an mju zoom yesterday and it was horrible.
>>2878751
I paid £30 for mine, which seems pretty usual for UK ebay. They're definitely inflated a little based on the mju II's reputation, so hang on until you spot one you really think is a bargain. It's a perfectly fine snapshotting camera but not much else. I hand it round at parties or take it with me when I walk the dogs. Sometimes I take it to work.
>>2883918
all of the viewfinders are terrible
>>2884244
The Mju II viewfinder is ok for a compact IMO. I have a shitty zoom version too and it's terrible in comparison.
>>2878751
go to your local fleamarket. shouldnt be paying more than 5 bucks
>>2884760
This. Got mine for 3€ and woud not pay more than 15€ for it.
The XA or Mju II is another story, though...

I buy my MJU 2's for the same price, around 2-5€
>>2884809

>>2884809
What? Where? Is there some sort of Mju II paradise in Germany I don't know about? I've been to a big flea market just the other day and there was nothing.

You just got to be lucky, my weekend routine consists of visiting like 4-5 flea markets on saturdays and sundays and looking for cameras. sometimes youre lucky, sometimes you arent

So I've been looking around a bit for something to carry around everyday and I think I've set my sights on the minox 35gt. Should I try to get one that comes with the flash? I'm new to photography and im pretty broke, so the 20-30 dollar difference has me torn. Also are there thrid party flash units for these that I can buy later, if I decide to go for in the near future? Thanks in advance /p/
>>2884837
I have a perfectly working Minox 35MB with flash in the box, it isn't MINT so collectors don't want it but if you offer enough you can have it.

>>2884860
I don't know. I don't want to lowball you, I know it's a nice peice, but around $40-50 is my limit right now. My current realistic alternative is an Olympus OM-10 with film for $50. That's not my first choice, so I want to make something work with you, but times are tough and im gonna go back to my uni soon so its gonna get even tougher economically
I have a Canon SX600 HS, compact and have a good zoom, for me it is a good compact camera, and at last is a lot better than a Nikon S3600 that i had.
Should I do it? Am I getting ripped off? What's the max you'd pay?
>>2884867
40-50 is a bit low. I'm not greedy but also not a charity.
I have an OM-10 working with manual adapter as well.
>No lowballs I know what I got.
>>2884909
Sorry we couldn't figure something out, I completely understand. Thanks for the offer though! Would you recommend the OM-10 for beginners?
>>2884919
Nice piece of kit, good lenses. TTL.
Aperture priority & automatic exposure for the newbs and manual shutter speed control with the adapter (and only with the adapter). That piece is a bit awkward though.
Same focussing screen as the OM-1.
Often overlooked, because everyone wants the OM-1.
Most manual slr's with TTL are fine for beginners, it's just a box and all about the lenses.
>>2884817
So I just copped a nice XA for 12€ on fleabay. Did I do good?
>>2884972
if it works yes
using that camera always puts a smile on my face

kinda ugly.
>>2888231
So is the Mju ii. The majority of compacts look like shit with the exception of meme titanium ones which cost $400+
Here are my compacts
The Ricoh GR1V is my daily carry.
The Pentax PC35-AFM is the camera that goes in non-camera bags
The Konica WB28 comes out for river trips, beach trips, rainy days, etc. It is invincible.
>>2888280
its actually $40
$1 = 1.31£
>>2888288
forgot to answer OPs questions
>What's your grail?
The GR1V was my compact grail
>What do you have?
The GR1V. I was shooting with the Pentax before I got it.
>What to avoid?
Not all 70's compact Rangefinders are created equal. Do your research before buying one. For as much as people love the Canonet the fact that it can't meter in manual mode is hilariously awful. Shame as it has a great viewfinder for the money.
>Where to cop?
I got my GR1V from the rangefinder forums off another user. Took me a while to find one that had the LCD replaced so I don't have to worry about LCD death for a while

it has cool lines and a sleek design. that nikon one is a dumb brick. lrn2aesthetics.

It looks cool and retro. The Mju ii is like every other clamshell plastic tacky piece of shit.
i've been browsing online for a good budget compact. do you guys have any recommendations?
Just found this little guy a few days ago. Finally popped in some new batteries and finished the roll that was left in it. It's pretty neat.

Pentax PC35AF, either variety. The M feels better in the hand but has a loud-ish motor wind so if you care about stealth, get the regular version.
The lens is fantastic and sharp. The AF is that infrared stuff so it prefocuses instantly and the lens travel is relatively fast for a compact so hardly any shutter delay at all. Just be sure to pay attention to the focus indicator, IR focusing can get fooled sometimes. The build quality is really quite good and the clamshell keep the lens clean on top of being super satisfying to open (spring loaded).
There are tons of them on ebay and its way cooler than buying into the MJU craze
>>2875209
Grail is to find old timey bellowed medium format camera from flea market someday, brand isnt too important as long it will work :S
Rolling with nikon 35ti from such flea market for that was 40€, seemed broken but after renewing battery seems to work pretty well.
Avoiding all the cheap digital compact cameras that are around, panasonics expecially, the menus make nikons operating menus feel like heaven

not sure if you will see this, but thanks for your advice friend!

Just an FYI, but Industrial 400 is Superia 400
I've never shot Superia. I only got 2 rolls so we'll see how I like the 100 stuff (which is actually Fujicolor 100).
>>2889095
I saw it.
BTW, when you get it, go read the 35MMC guide to disabling the exposure beep. You basically just undo the top plate and snip a wire, took me like 5 minutes.
Canonet QL17
AGAT 18K
I just bought one of these russian half-framers. Anyone heard of these guys? Supposed to be quite small and light.

I have one. It's fun. It's also very plasticy and I managed to break the shutter mechanism pretty quickly. Luckily it's pretty simple so I managed to fix it myself.
I got a Konica AA-35 a while back so I don't use the Agat much anymore.
Wondering If I could get a recommendation.
My current cameras are:

Mju II
I've really fallen in love with compact cameras after getting the MJU II so im looking for a digital compact. Im looking for something I can actually fit inside my pocket or at least a jacket pocket. I'm not looking to spend over $400 (willing to buy used) but would prefer to spend in the $300 range. I've looked at the x100 but kinda question how portable it is. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
>>2891229
I have the X100. It's portable for sure, but not pocketable at all (unless its a large coat)
I hear the Ricoh GR (digital) are fairly comparable. Never used one, but look as though they would fit into a pocket. People seem to like them for shooting street if thats your thing. There's a few different version of them, I think the 16megapixel being the newest, and the 12MP being the generation before.
FYI - Picture shot in x100.

have been MIA and using GRDIV as my daily for a few months. I like it a lot despite taking a shit on me twice in the first month (lens stuck in, stuck out) and now sensor dust. I have an a7 but wanted a compact to carry around and not worry about. first I had an x100s and liked it a lot less than I thought I would, and it felt too nice to not worry about. also not pocketable. as far as 35mm I got a T2 at the flea market for $5 last month, seems to work fine though I haven't developed anything from it yet

I really wanted to try Canonet, but the flickr images look like ass. Anyone got any from it?
>>2889016
lucky you found that at a flea market, people are paying upwards of 200-350+ for the meme dials on top
>>2890328
small, light and annoying to use due to no aperture/dof control - aperture/shutter combos are preset since they are physically the same thing. Shot two rolls on mine. It has very blurry corners up to f/5.6 and the viewfinder is misleading. It takes more effort to use properly than any normal camera. Keyword being properly. Pic related, ilford pan 400.
>>2878662
Can you describe it? I'm considering it as a compact.
>>2891229
I love my x100, but it's not pocketable in trouser pockets, jacket maybe depending on what kind. The issue is the depth of it, the lens sticks out. Once you've got a filter ring on there and a proper lens cap it really adds to the bulk. It's nice and light, but just a tiny bit heavy for comfortable one handed shooting (although not heavy enough to need two hands if you're shooting in auto/aperture priority).
Just got fixed this mju, got it for 9€ because it was broken and it came with another one in very bad condition for parts. Opened it and the film winder was broken, looks almost as new and it's working perfectly.
