I can understand taking pictures of objects to practice lighting and product shot photography and get some use out of those short focus lenses. However as it seems to be just the item in question I don't see a lot of deviation from the shots used to sell these items already. Do you ever attempt to create scenes or introduce other items? Is this a convention I am unaware of? are these shots just for your own enjoyment or is this to try and break into the product photography market?

Followed that link, Yeah this is more what I was thinking would be interesting to do with such figures.

The only defense I have for the OP is that if they want to do product photography this might be a good place to start and understand light. However I do completely agree that the shots are way to narrow for that purpose. introducing interesting backgrounds and trying to create a scene would dramatically improve the interest in the subject matter.
Since the figures each have their own backstory perhaps playing on that would be a good start.

It's hardly a unique or special setup, so I wouldn't call it "mine"!

Small soft boxes help a lot, since they create softer shadows. I usually put a flash to the side of the figure as key light and a apply rim light with a second flash to separate the subject from the background.

I've also used colour gels on the second flash pretty often to make these basic shots slightly less dull.
