Yeah I know what you mean. I took a few at this spot, including left with camera pointing more right. To me this one ended up feeling the most balanced, heavier foreground on the right but the background seemed heavy enough on the left to balance it out. Still, Im not fully happy with it. Yep, what I came back with.
Flew over with just carryon and bought a secondhand suitcase over there to bring back 20kgs checked. I was right on/little over the limit.
I had my checked bag inspected at Narita because a few litres of liquid and some steel reels would have looked hella suss on the xray, but no issues otherwise.
I got those cheap Jetstar flights too.
I shot a GS645 over there, but returned it b/c pinhole in the bellows.

Thanks for the comments Andrew, they more or less validate how I was feeling about most of them and give me some good perspective on others. Glad to hear you liked >>2860858 tho, I was struggling with the feeling of whether I was forcing a bad shot or not. I sometimes tend to feel that some bad photos are better than they are when I have really enjoyed the hike and get nostalgia / good feelings looking at a photo haha.
All the hikes I did were just day hikes, but they were still really lovely, especially coming from Australia - the vegetation in Japan is just the total opposite to here.
The first 6 photos are from the Kamikochi area, I wanted to do a bigger hike but it was still way too early and so I could only manage a short day hike up Yakedake.
The next one >>2860865 was from a small day hike around the eastern rim of Hakone
The next ones after that, expect for the last one, are all from the Nikko area, most of them from Mt. Nantai.
Have you done much hiking besides Mt Gozasiho while you've been in Japan? I'd recommend any of the hikes I did if you end up in the area. Kamikochi area looks like it would be an amazing place for some proper hiking later in the season - I think it wouldnt be too bad to get too from Kyoto if you go via Takayama

I know what you mean dude, I struggle with the same. It's especially hard when going back and looking at the photos after a few months. That photo definitely works for me though.
Cheers for the info on the hikes! You sure got around, that's rad. My SO has some family that live in between Nakatsugawa and Takayama so I'm over there a few times a year. I'm actually moving Kyoto -> Mie Prefecture this summer so I'll probably take some of these recommendations and do them. How were you getting around? Trains or did you rent a car?
I haven't done much hiking. Haven't had the time really but I'm leaving Japan in about 13 months and am wanting to do a bunch of hiking in the upcoming year.

What did you do to these photos besides take them with your phone and crop? I've been trying to get this look for a while now.
Do you put them through lightroom and mess with the white balance?

they're literally just VSCO presets, it's easy. this shows that you don't need a really expensive camera but the iphone 6 image is better than most cameras anyway. any body, a good zoom lens, learn to expose with either metering on the interesting parts of learn exposure compensation properly then use VSCO 01 presets (don't bother with anything more than 01), see how they look with your cameras color rendition and change parts of the preset to top them off a little, sharpen for the photo and for web and you are done.

Got around mostly by Trains - with a couple of buses here and there when needed. I used the cheapest rail-pass of 5 non-consecutive days of unlimited travel because it was cheaper than hiring a car, though looking back I think I would have been able to see and do more had I hired one, unfortunately.
Make sure you post some photos from the hikes when you get time to go!
