Are there any working assistants on /p/? I'm looking at trying my hand at assistant work. I did a little bit back in my home town but I'm emigrating to Vancouver and though that would be a good place to try make it stick.

Any tips for an aspiring assistant? Getting over there I'll have no contacts so I'll probably have to resort to cold calling photographers and whoring myself out at conventions.. that sound about right?

No worries, AI will replace you before too long.

Dat sum AI?

AI will begin by cutting down on a lot of manufacturing/manual labour (already happening)
then transition into replacing all basic numeracy jobs (accounting, auditing)
itl be a loooong time until AI is smart enough to replace IT jobs (IT encompasses a lot of shit though so not exactly a definitive statement)

ex-assistant here.

I got my job by emailing all the photographers in my area. Eventually I got fired because I had sex with one of the models during break so I ended up becoming a webdev instead.

Worth it though, being an assistant is a thankless brainless job.

Did you become an assistant with a view to eventually becoming a full time photographer? I worry it'll burn me out

I had really gotten into photography back then and I thought it would become a pro photographer so I decided to start by getting an assistant job to get on the job experience. After doing some work and observing the workflow of the photographers I realised that it is mostly a tedious job so when I got fired i decided to do something else and made photography a hobby.
