Alright, been a little bit since I posted a thread, so here comes a new one. Been moving a bit away from all the prism stuff and have started doing a lot of gel and colored light work. It started out a bit rough but it's slowly getting better. As always, crits, comments, and questions welcome.

Hmm it's definitely not bad low light, but as you know the A7sII would serve you a lot better if you don't need a ton of resolution. Stuff gets pretty grainy above 1600, I just kind of embrace it.

Honestly it's nothing too fancy, pretty run and gun. I have a bunch of colored lightbulbs I got off amazon, and I normally replace one or two bulbs in lamps or overhead lights at wherever I'm shooting, then I also have a super cheap Neewer CN-126 that I gel and set up and use as a primary light. I know it's not the most glamorous, but my entire setup fits in a backpack so it makes it really nice when I'm traveling around the city.

No, photography is mostly a passion project for me right now, I'll book some paid stuff but for the most part I shoot trade. It's rough scheduling shoots around my work but the upside is that I get to shoot exactly what I want and I don't have to bother with shooting stuff I'm not feeling, I get complete creative freedom, blah blah.

yes pls, I'd like to learn how you did these. these are dope man
This was just one gel'd red light camera right, and a normal tungsten lamp pretty far off camera left.
I'll try and post the lighting setup for my shots from here on out. They're kind of embarrassingly simple as far as setups go, but I guess to be fair I only shot natural light for the longest time. It is a good example of how you don't need to go full on Crewdson to get decent results though.

Mike did it better.
How/where do you meet the models?
Like for shots like this
>> 2817742
>>2817750
He's using light for almost all of these. You don't need a $2000 full frame kit to get these images, at all.
>>2817806
Probably, Mike is good at what he does, he's a professional for a reason.
>>2817808
Almost every single one of my models I link up with on Instagram, same with MUA, hairstylists, and wardrobe. Basically everyone I know networks on IG. I'll occasionally do some testing for agencies in which case the models come directly from them, but the shots that agencies normally want from tests and the stuff I like to shoot doesn't always overlap.
>>2817811
While I love the A7r, it's true that I don't think it was necessary for any of these shots. An EVF really does help a ton when shooting through prisms and things though because you actually see exactly where the reflections are going to fall, as opposed to DSLRs where the mirror throws things off a bit.
The light in this one feels a bit unpolished but the shot has an old horror movie feel that I'm a big fan of.

I'm pretty big on IG man I just can't seem to find models that wanna do semi nude stuff for free, maybe I'm just a cheap cunt. Any tips senpai?
Ok, I really want to like all of these and I think that what's keeping me from it is my own malfunction. I see these and at first I'm like "cool" but immediately I'm then "but it's so try-hardy and been done".
I say this is my malfunction because it's a lot of what keeps me from experimenting around with stuff like this and other techniques.
Keep at it anon. I've loved every thread I've seen you post (albeit with the "meh tryhardy thing), if that makes any sense.
>>2817823
The main thing working against you is that you don't have a lot of portraiture and definitely no "edgy" portraiture on your IG. People generally feel more comfortable shooting stuff that they've already seen you can shoot well. In that aspect your first of those kinds of shoots is probably gonna be the hardest. Maybe settle for a model that may not be the best, but is willing to shoot just so you can get some of that stuff to show other better models in the future. That advice kind of holds for portraiture in general, when I first moved to the city I had next to no portraiture in my port so I shot a bunch of Model Mayhem models, before starting to reach out to people on IG. It also may help to post more portraiture in general before jumping straight to nudes or semi-nudes.

I don't think that my stuff is even close to unique or original, but just out of curiosity can you point me towards some other photogs doing similar work? I'm not trying to call bullshit, I'm just genuinely interested since I'm always looking for more inspo. Maybe it's the bubble of people I'm following on IG, but there's not a whooole bunch of similar stuff in my feed, though the whole shooting with found neon lights is starting to catch on. I know d. on here does some good ass colorful portraits, and I've been liking Mr. Iozo's work for crazy gel'd lights, and Damon Loble's stuff for just solid "beauty" portraits.
I don't even want to direct that specifically towards you, if anyone has any good rec's for photogs working with a potentially similar vibe I'd love to check them out.

Do it, I'd almost say to focus on quantity over quality at first, and then once you have a solid base cut back and start only working with people you're excited for an try and get really solid shots. Are you in a major city? That tends to make things a lot easier.
>>2817837
Lara Jade and Joey L play with this same sort of thing a lot off the top of my head. Beyond that I'd have to look and don't really have time now, but I've been seeing a good deal of the two color shots springing up in more ad centric works over the last six months...although, it might be that they're just more sticking out in my mind because of novelty.
Honestly, I wasn't saying any of that as a dig at you or your work, just more me trying to work through my blocks, you know?
>>2817845
Yeah man I didn't really take it as a shot, like I said, I don't have any delusions that I'm doing anything new. I basically crib directly from Benoît Debie, albeit poorly. I don't think you have to "work through blocks or anything", esp with photography and art. There's so much out there that if something isn't doing much for you, you can just move on until you find something that does. Though there is something to be said for more difficult works that require some effort (not that that's what mine are, at all).
>>2817707
How do you decide where to shoot? Do you scout locations ahead of time? Do you use the models personal housing or do you have apartments of other people's to use? Do you take input from the model on where they want, or do you have a location first and then get model to suit?
I've always loved your stuff, you have the exact style of editorial/fashion/portraits that I hope to achieve. Can't wait for more.
>>2817852
Thanks, I really appreciate that.
To be honest finding locations is the biggest thing I struggle with here. I'll routinely have great models to shoot that I feel like I waste on shit locations. For the colorful light interior series (I really should name it) I shoot in the model's apartment, which is great because they tend to be comfortable there, and they have their full wardrobe and mua readily available. It's not great because I never really know what I'm walking into before I get there, so there's a lot of me walking around and looking at their apartment from different angles while I figure out what I'm gonna do. I really really wish I had a better solution for finding locations, but it's a struggle not having a car, and everything being either shot to death or wildly expensive around here.

Thanks, I like how low-key his style is. Would love to shoot in some of those interiors too, sigh.

Umm my most updated thing would prob be my instagram: @asumaray. There's a link to my tumblr on there which I need to update, and my site which I hardly ever update is http://audiesumaray.com
Alright guys, heading to the gym to climb for a little bit, I'll be back on tonight and post a few more photos.
>>2817707
Some really nice shots here man, well done.
The one thing I could think to critique right now is your composition in some of these.
>>2817789
The way that sewage cover meets with her body is ruining the shot IMO. I'd also consider dumbing down the highlights in a couple areas - that flashing "stop" hand and the street light just above her head. My eyes usually go to the brightest part of the image, so those are competing with the subject for me.
>>2817722
Same here with the highlights, though they aren't as distracting here for me. Take what I say with a grain of salt.
>>2817720
This is my personal fave, the expression, the light and posing are all bang on here.
Other than that just keep doing what you do, and always be refining and pushing yourself when you can.
>>2817727
I really like this one.
>>2817894
Thanks for the crit, I definitely agree with the sewage cover in the first one, I remember wishing it wasn't there when I was editing it.

Man, this is great. Thanks for the thread OP. Though I would like to say, I'd like you to experiment more with aspect ratios, especially seeing as you went for a rather cinematic style in a lot of these.

My fav
Beautiful work man, this is some real good shit
These are not bad but a bit too trendy and shallow. I don't think they have much else going besides pretty girls in neon lights.
Still, much better than the board's average. I'd just look for more consistency and maybe less distracting elements in the pics while keeping the neons and prisms etc.
>>2817822
>as opposed to DSLRs where the mirror throws things off a bit.
I'm not sure why this would be the case? With a DSLR, aren't you seeing exactly what the sensor sees? I'm not disagreeing, as such, because I haven't tried it, but logically it doesn't seem to make sense to me.
>>2818326
Ohthumbelina?
>>2817713
Like your stuff but got to say my god she's hot. Is she the same model that was standing in front of the bail bonds neon sign in a previous thread?
>>2818550
Thanks, good comments. I definitely wish I could drive more 16:9 crops on the regular, but the issue is that I generally edit my sets in a way that the images are all consistent with each other, so to go 16:9 I'd need to do it for everything, and generally there ends up being at least one or two that I can't get to work but love too much to cut. I do think I can get away with inconsistent aspect ratios for sets that I'm not aiming to get published though, since they're basically never seen the in set form.
>>2818578
I can't really speak to the physics of it but I do notice a distinct difference between optical and EVF when shooting through prisms.

I took your advise and posted on a site called Starnow, all the stars are models that want to work with me, thanks for the idea bro!

Beautiful photo
Check'd and ereck'd
This is good photography.
Getting models that people want to see nude or in various states of undress is not easy, so the skill required to do this can't be ignored.
The photos and portraits are solid. Gels can be really gimmicky, but you create kind of a look and stick with it - direction of the models helps add to this, so it builds into a style that goes beyond "dramatic gels". I'm on board.
you should shoot slide film in 6x4.5 format t b h f a m

What gels you use for the light? Tryna find some to fit my neewer 160 led panel
>>2823807
Thanks for the input! Talking about color, do you do all your coloring by hand or are you using some presets as a base?

I'm using a Lee Filter gel multipack, they're way too big for the Neewer but I just fold them over and tape them. Doesn't look pretty but it works.

Of your gels? You don't re-sell gels. You get a whole pack for like $20. They're just a thin piece of plastic that you put over the flash. Not like a lens filter.

I don't buy tools with their resale value as a priority. You can use a set of gels for the rest of your life. There's no reason to ever sell them.
