Any weird or obscure models besides the usual suspects?
I havent even seen pic related irl but id like to try one. They look fun, like they could stand severe beating and abuse.

Almost all MF cameras were made for working pros, so they're designed and built to take a beating. I'm a particular fan of the Mamiya 645 series - nothing so far out of the ordinary, but a number of lenses with no equivalent in other systems, and onward compatible in the digital age.

i like the size, i like the concept, i like the 16 frrames per roll, but never got caught by the look of the photos. somethings missing.

Sometimes a little bland and aseptic, perhaps. More for three weddings a week than muh art.
>>2800134
Mamiya lenses are like that honestly. They are very clean and sterile. They are great lenses, but sometimes I wish they had the look of other MF lenses.
>>2800125
jesus can you kill yourself already
>>2800118
The Mamiya Press cameras are good fun, in that they look funky and accept a wide range of backs and lenses. They're one of those cameras where people will come to you and talk to you about it. Makes street portraiture that little bit more fun when your subject is interested in you and your camera
>>2800139
>Makes street portraiture that little bit more fun when your subject is interested in you and your camera
just like TLR's.
>thats the one vivian maier had!
girls cream at the sight of TLRs lately. i cant wait enough for the fucking weather to fix itself so i can have some cool overcast days for street portraiture. its already autumn ffs.
>>2800118
I have 2 koni-omega rapid, the first model. It is a lot of fun. It takes some abuse but like any other camera it should not be mistreated.
The worst thing I have done to it is taken it from really cold outdoor weather to a really hot indoor place. I forgot to put it in my bag or plastic bag so it can acclimate. Water was condensing all over it. I thought it was doomed for sure so I just watched it. I then just rubbed it with cloth to dry it and it was fine. Went back out and kept shooting.
The best thing about it is the cheap price and the image quality is not too bad.
>>2800139
I messed with a Mamiya Super 23 at a shop recently and it just seemed too huge to be viable. With how long it took to set up each shot, I might as well be using a 4x5 Speed Graphic. If anyone here uses one regularly I'm interested in what your process is like.
>>2800189
I own one but don't shoot regularly with it. They're one of those cameras where the joy of operating it becomes part of the enjoyment of shooting, like TLRs and more complicated MF box cameras. You do get a little faster at shooting with them with practice, they are press cameras after all.
The variety of lenses and backs are what attracts me to the Mamiya Press Cameras. That and people like to have their picture taken when I use this gigantic bulky thing

I hate you but not as much as I hate myself. I want that beauty. It reminds me of all the auctions I missed. I hate lusting after rare shit. It's not even the price. It's just finding one that's the challenge. I got a couple of items on my wish list that will make me broke because I'll pay almost any price for them since they are so hard to find.

Any of you carry a MF SLR walking around outside for either street or nature/landscape photography? If so, what camera do you use and how's it working out for you?
>>2801571
I have used that exact kit on the streets before. It's okay. I very much prefer having a meter and priority modes to having to meter and shoot manually, but if you have consistent light and can meter once and just shoot, the results are what you'd expect from medium format.
To me, not worth the hassle weight/size and inconvenience.
>>2800120
I have a 645 500/th that I use for street (no-one looks at you if your camera is held down by your side, and you can frame through the waist finder).
I would also like a good quality 1000s. But be warned, the 645 super is a pile of shit with serious design flaws.
>>2800189
I got one a while ago, and also have a Graflex.
While both are clunky box cameras, the Mamiya is massively more ergonomic, in that it's actually fun to shoot with it hand-held. While it is on the slow side to operate, I find I use it a lot more like a "normal" camera, instead of the "set up on tripod and do your ritual prayers" -shtick that is using the graflex.
You also have to take into account the nature of difference between LF and MF lenses. most LF lenses, you want to stop down pretty far to reach good sharpness and DOF, which relegates them to pretty much tripod-only use even in good light conditions. With MF you have more leeway, meaning hand-held use isn't out of the question with the right kind of film.
I also enjoy being able to freely switch between 6x7 (~same aspect ratio as graflex) and 6x9 formats. And of course, it's massively less expensive to operate at 6 money per roll instead of 2-3 money per sheet.
That said, i do love my Graflex too. But I've mostly relegated its use for slide/landscape photography when I'm alone and about and have all the time in the world to take my pics.
I guess the main difference is that while you can use both in a slow methodical way, you'll find that the focusing and framing is what ultimately makes them quite distinct, and the Mamiya that much faster & more user-friendly to use.
Ever tried framing a picture with an an F/8 lens in dusk on LF ground glass? It's just not very fun. It's so dark you can hardly see what the fuck you're doing (and the image is upside-down, to boot). Needing to use a loupe for accuracy also slows you down further.
Which is to say, unless you're content with only zone focusing, using the RF is just massively snappier, quicker, and less painful than focusing & framing with the a ground glass and darkcloth on a LF camera. It's much closer to " just using a normal camera" than what you get if you go with the full LF experience, despite all other similarities.
>>2801571
I've done some street snapshit with a ricohmatic tlr and an rb67 w/ wlf. In my experience, you get more attention, esp with the mamiya due to the size and sound; but not necessarily bad attention. Typically, I get more smiles and have had a few people come and ask me about the camera. Something smaller with an eyelevel finder or rangefinder may be faster but I've found that people find it more threatening.
Not obscure, but i have always had a hardon for bronica.
>>2804744
What flaws are those?
I'm testing out a 645 1000 now that I may buy from a friend, haven't noticed anything wonky yet apart from some loose contact between the camera and the meter prism.
>>2804809
>Ever tried framing a picture with an an F/8 lens in dusk
This is why I'll be going rangefinder Linhof if I ever go LF.
Movements are for dweebs anyway.
Everytime I see the same

Formulaic calendar bullshit.
2 of my favorites right now are the Hasselblad 1000f, and the Norita 66. The hassy has a 80mm 2.8 tessar as the standard lens, and the Norita has a 80mm f2 as the standard lens. I've done a bit of street photography with the hassy. I'm a big fan of the way the Zeiss tessar renders.
>>2804959
>I'm a big fan of the way the Zeiss tessar renders.
tessar is my waifu.
>>2804830

>>2804917
The 1000s is fine, as it's just an upgraded 645 with a self timer. The super is a different fish altogether. If it has a removable film back, then it's a super.
Flaws? Holding it feels like one of those rubber bricks you had to fetch from the bottom of the school swimming pool. Nothing like the comfortable, ergonomic design of the original 645. The big chunky levers for the mirror lock and multiple exposure were replaced by tiny little ones that hurt your fingers to turn. The top shutter release was removed, meaning you can't use your thumb for waist level photography. But the biggest flaw is the plastic connection plate on the left side. The connector serves the left hand grip shutter release or the cable release. It's a 1 inch piece of plastic which WILL fall off and get lost, but it's biggest absolutely shit-tier attribute is that when fitted, it covers the mirror lockup lever.
Just imagine...you've put the camera on a tripod, you've framed that crucial shot, and decided to cable release for minimum shake. Now all you've got to do is lock up that big old mirror for the perfect...woops, dismantle everything.
Stupid design. Just stupid.
Oh, and on my super, the shutter curtain has twisted and jammed several times, invoking much panic and swearing. My trusty 645 has never done this, even though I've had it for years and years.
>>2800120
most of them lack any kind of features a pro would want, hell some of lack features anyone would want, multiple shutter speeds for one.
>>2801571
I don't but would like to try street with MF. Well, I've shot a bit with a Holga but that doesn't really count obviously.
I'm just really lusting after the heavy & clumsy Pentacks 6x7, I don't know why. Even if the Fuji stuff would be closer to the P&S compacts I use for 35mm, I think I would still rather get that.
>>2806941
>the heavy & clumsy Pentacks 6x7
just heavy, not clumsy.. the first time i got it out for outdoors shooting it amazed me how fast you work it. if camera weight/small hands is not a problem to you, it shouldnt give you more trouble than a spotmatic.
>>2801571
Street and long hikes for the majority of my Bronica SQ-A's use. Wouldn't change it for the world. Had a Mamiya 6 for awhile thinking it would be even better but it wasn't. Back to the SQ-A I went.
>>2806995
ffuu I just got a mamiya 6 because I thought something like the bronica would be too much
>>2801571
I have a Bronica S2A, but it's pretty heavy and is more at home on a tripod than in hand. Shooting with a handheld meter is also pretty time consuming if you're doing anything other than landscape, architecture, or portraiture.
One of these days I might get an EC-TL or an SQ-A.

Maybe a dumb question but do Hassy have a patent on 6x6 system cameras or something?
Like, how come there are 6x6 Mamiya TLRs and RFs but their system cameras are all 6x4.5? Same goes for Bronica.
Are my only options for a 6x6 system camera a Hassy 500 or a Kiev slavshit copy?
>>2807599
To my knowledge they have a patent on their exact mechanism, but not a blanket copyright on ALL 6x6 SLR cameras.
Bronica made a whole line of 6x6 SLRs with ones like the S2 and SQ, Rollei had the SL66, there was the Pentacon Six, Norita 66, Kowa Sixm and the Exakta 66 to name a few.
Your cheapest options are going to be something like a Bronica S2 or SQ-A, or a Pentacon Six if you want a 6x6 SLR. Don't bother with the Kiev 88 unless you want to play the slavshit quality control lottery.

Boy howdy do I. Prepare to get butthurt.
I have an incredibly rare Linhof 70 model with a 10.5cm f/4.5 Voigtlander APO Lanthar lens. This thing is so rare, I've never seen one with this lens for sale. The lens itself sells for many thousands, and a couple of Bessa II cameras with this lens have sold for over $10,000. The Linhof 70 is a much better camera in all respects, just bigger and heavier, so I expect it would command even more.
I use it to take snapshits because fuck you.

>>2811567
If you did actual work instead of simulating it by raising and lowering chunks of metal like some kind of robot you'd probably have developed the physical coordination needed to handle moderately-sized objects without dropping them.
I'm interested in getting into medium format. Right now I'm looking at the Fuji GW670/680/690 cameras. I know the big difference is the amount of shots on a 120 roll.
What I'm wondering about is what are the differences between the single numbered models, the II, and the III?

http://camerapedia.wikia.com/wiki/Fujica_GW690#GW690II_and_GSW690II

To be fair, dumbbell work like flys, raises, and presses do help to build a lot of coordination. They activate the muscles in a way that is conducive to handling real world objects.
>>2811779
>I love TLRs but not having interchangable lenses and backs sucks.
thats why TLRs are for true pros. because they arent in the field thinking "aw this would look cool in color, aw this would be epic in bw", they load color or bw roll with a project and a clear aesthetic in mind.

Also, what basic research might not tell you is that the 70's and 80's are rare and elusive, and come at a premium most of the time.
The Fuji push button spool release on the III's is a massive improvement on the twist lock system, so much faster to reload that it's almost worth the price difference on its own.
Hot shoe idgaf, any decent flash can sync to PC anyway.

dunno about this attitude of restrictive equipment = more pro

What do I need to start shooting medium format film? I want full manual and interchangeable lenses but don't know what I need because many cameras are sold in parts and I can't tell what goes to what. I've been shooting 35mm for 2 years now with ease but it seems that medium format is quite a big leap from 35mm in terms of difficulty and price. I have a budget of around $100 - $150, is this enough to get a good setup and what would you recommend? Thanks.

>I have a budget of around $100 - $150
PENTACON SIX. AT YOUR RISK.
>>2811977
>I have a budget of around $100 - $150
Sounds like you don't have a budget.
How does someone as poor as you even shoot 35mm?
>>2811982
What do you mean "at your own risk"? What's common that's wrong with these and is there anything I should look out for?
Bronica SQ-A, so nice
>>2811977
$150 isn't going to get you much. Maybe a non metered Kiev 60, MAYBE a Pentacon Six like the other anon said, and you could probably find a Yashica TLR like the A or D for $150 or less.
>>2811985
Pentacons are old and are known for sticky mechanics. I would recommend getting it CLA'd if you ever got one.
They also apparently refuse to work in cold weather.

35mm at a basic level is effectively free
>>2811977
You probably won't be able to get something with interchangeable lenses for that price (maybe a really good deal on an RB67) but you could get a really nice TLR that would take excellent pictures.
>>2811999
You could probably build an RB kit for sub $200, but shipping would rape you.
>>2811997
>35mm at a basic level is effectively free
what the fuck.
>>2811999
What should I look for in a TLR? I've considered these but like cameras with interchangeable lenses, I have no idea what to get or what to watch out for. Also, how's the glass on them?
>>2812003
If you're not a sperg and you interact with other humans, you'll find that a lot of people have 35mm cameras they're never going to use again and would be happy to hand them over to someone interested. Similar deal for expired film, which is generally fine. Failing that, P&S cameras usually run around $5 at salvo.
>>2812005
Something in the f/3 or f/4 area, preferably a Yashica or Minolta. Keep in mind that you're probably not going to get a light meter at that price point unless a 124 or Yachica Mat EM pops up.
>>2812019
>formula 1 is literally free, just find someone who buys you a racing car lmao!
end yourself, my cancerous pal.
>>2812027
Is it actually difficult for you to comprehend the idea that different kind of objects with different rarities and desirabilities may have different values, ranging from zero on up?
>>2812005
You should probably look for a Minolta Autocord because they're apparently less likely to have mechanical problems.
Most TLRs had either 3 or 4 element lenses. None of them are really bad, but the 4 element ones are what you want unless you're into swirly bokeh and similar.

This dude is from /fa/ right
I'd really like to shoot this thing more but I lack means of scanning MF and the lab does such a garbage job at it. I love how compact this thing is, more pocketable than my Contax T2. Wish I had more shutter speeds than the three that Vario offers, though.

Got pic related for $50, along with a modified 120 spool and a 116 spool, and a used roll of 220 Portra 160VC. Wondering if I can remove the lens without damaging the camera to mess around with on digital while I save up for more film. In case anyone doesn't know what it is, it's a No.1A Folding Pocket Kodak R.R. Lens Type Model D.

That's plenty for colour negs.
Also, don't be afraid of f/32, it's not the shitshow you might imagine from hearing people talk about "unusable softeness" at f/16 on crop digi.
Pic related.
