That tripod is probably meant for a video camera, they use that second nub so they don't rotate themselves loose during pans and stuff.

also OP, I've had some tripod plates where that pin is held in with a screw on the other side of the plate, and you can just undo that and take it out. idk if yours is like that though. If you can do so though, it won't hurt anything.

It's a reference to an old thread with a similar question, where someone made a joke.
The pin in the tripod plate vanishes when it's depressed into the plate.
So you can then make reference to the Monty Python skit "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition"
