At least gearfags needs to engage their brain when obsessing over near gear. This is just reducing the world to the intellectual level of a fucking Magpie.

Yes, it really really is. If something in your frame isn't adding to your story, and supporting your concept, it should be removed, because otherwise, it's distracting and adds empty business to the frame. Look through the RPT and tell me that there isn't something in nearly every one that should have been removed to stop from detracting from the image.

>If something in your frame isn't adding to your story, and supporting your concept, it should be removed, because otherwise, it's distracting and adds empty business to the frame.

We are talking about photography not painting. Try removing a building or a mountain from your photo. I guess you can photoshop all that stuff out but that would imply there were no good photos before photoshop. This might work in a studio but in the real world it is unrealistic to imply that you can remove everything you want. You can remove some things but not all. Again this would imply that there are no good pictures taken outside of a studio. Even in a studio you might not be able to remove everything you want. You remove what you can and work with what you can't remove.

>Look through the RPT and tell me that there isn't something in nearly every one that should have been removed to stop from detracting from the image.

Look through any iconic or highly acclaimed photo and tell me that there isn't something in nearly every one that should have been removed to stop from detracting from the image.

So you don't know about moving around? Or changing your distance from the subject to adjust compression? Or changing focal length to change your frame? etc.

>So you don't know about moving around? Or changing your distance from the subject to adjust compression? Or changing focal length to change your frame? etc.

I know all about taking a different picture. I guess I can move around and have a different background while at the same time my subject has completely changed. I can also change distance and have my subject be a completely different size. I can also change the length and have a completely different composition.

You can change a lot of things but that will also make it more likely that you will take a different picture than you initially intended to take.

Even after you do all that there might still be things you can't remove.

Does everybody on /p/ carry film rangefinders around, or is it just that everybody who's inclined to take one of these photos does?

Here, old-ass pic of my everyday rig, back when I was actually shooting for a living. I still shoot for work but it's not my main job and it's just around the shop, maybe I'll take a pic later.

What's with all the shut ins talking shit on the swiss knife? I have one and it's literally the most useful and functional thing I own. I'm no outdorrsman, I'm a student, but I use it multiple times a week for eating fruit, cutting things with the scissors, using the screw driver and so on. Literally what the fuck.
>>
>>2761763
Some of us have knives, forks, screwdrivers, scissors, hands, teeth....

I have never owned or carried a knife, and yet I have never once had a moment where I was unable to accomplish something I was trying to do. Open a box on the road? Use my keys. want to eat an apple? I'll bite it. Etc.

>>

Leatherman is where its at mate.
>>
>>2761765
Yes of course, the whole purpose of a Swiss army knife, though, is to HAVE the knife, scissors, screw driver, tweezers, hole punch, and so on in a retractable pocket-sized object for when you're out of the house. Why is this so hard to understand? I like gardening, so if I see something I want to get a cutting for I'll take out my Swiss knife. If I have a loose thread on my shirt - scissors. Bicycle screw is loose - screwdriver. Need to open a package or an orange - knife.

Is it because of the knife? The knife is only one part of the object. I honestly doubt people buy Swiss Army Knives for the knife and to be cool - they're functional objects.

Yes I'm angry, I don't see why such an every day object is being so heavily derided by you people.
>>
>>2761771
Sure it's more functional but swiss army knives fit onto a keyring easier and have a lower profile. If I was going camping I'd prefer a leatherman but for every day carry nothing beats a swiss.
>>
>>2761772
Because it's a pocket fedora. You don't need it, you use it to be the guy who has the knife .
>>
>>2761774
Except you're being ridiculous. My girlfriend has one, her sister has one, her dad has one, my dad has one. Many of my friends have one. They're just every day functional objects, there's nothing more to it except for your strange perceptions.

Should have gone to like f/5.6 instead of f/1.4 to get the whole thing in focus--I can barely read your lens. Not quite centred either, and your item could be better aligned.

Otherwise yeah you're doing it right, tasteful and minimal selection of items, good general placement, good image resolution and file size.

I love when millennials take a well known word that absolutely means something totally normal, and try to make fun of someone else for not thinking that it means some completely different thing that ALSO has a well known term.

You want fleek? Take it. You want flame? Iffy, but if you're using a noun as an adjective, okay, we can get there. take it.

You can't, however, suddenly claim that "drive" suddenly means "fly" now, for example. Because drive, as a verb, has a meaning that everyone knows.
>>

Why do so many people feel the need to listen to music 24/7? I love music as much as the next person, but shit, give it a fucking rest every now and then. Your brain needs some quiet time. for sure, I love the look of big light.
The camera is no heavier than a DSLR, and LF negs provide a tonal range, and feel of space no other format can provide.

I have always enjoyed Polaroid (Impossible is a disappointment), the film itself has a softness which is kind of interesting.

>>
>>2764237
Jails are a complex problem and it all seems to point to jails being a flawed concept. There's no resocialization happening and it's just legal modern slavery, not that I myself have an alternative solution.

Even if they were paid the state's minimum wage it would still be slavery because they're forced to work with the threat of losing absolutely everything, but perhaps if they were paid the state's minimum wage there would be less incentive to have mandatory sentences for small offenses such as non-violent drug abuse. Well, there would still be private jails that would want to be full to get the state's money and cheap labor and people in power aren't universally against bribery / lobbying for corporations that are making bank on said cheap labor and state cash but the simple answer is don't have private jails, if you can somehow get a law passed.

What?
Without an iPhone, what is the way to stay in contact with friends, upload photos, check in with work, send and receive emails, navigate to new places, take notes, make reminders, manage my networked schedule and calendar, etc. Without the addition of any extra stuff?

People are saying that you can do all the stuff you can do with a pocket knife with teeth, nails, and keys, without carrying anything extra or going out of your way. How do you do all the functionality of a phone without the phone?

no shit, that's why iphones are convenient and not necessary. you can do all that it does with other stuff. this additional notion of "without other stuff" is just moving the goalposts because you're retarded
>>
>>2764663
And yet without a knife, you can still do all the same shit with things you're already carrying with you. Fingernails. Teeth. Keys. It doesn't involve bringing anything extra along. That's the point. A phone does things nothing else can. A knife does... make you look like the guy who has a knife.

How many posts have you spent attacking the idea that people carry knives? People who are calm and at least partially well adjusted don't go that far out of their way to attack something so utterly pointless to attack. People who are calm and marginally well adjusted also don't assume that their life experiences are universal to the point of telling other people that their life experiences are wrong over trivial matters.

You're fucked in the head anon.
>>
>>2764677
Except in literally all of the most common uses for a knife in your daily life. (Opening mail, opening boxes that have been taped, cleaning under your finger nails)

>>2764680
>How many posts have you spent attacking the idea that people carry knives?
I would guess roughly the same amount as you have been defending your need for a knife?
You're welcome to tell me all the times you've needed one. That might sway me I suppose. If you work every day on a fishing boat and regularly get tied up in the line and would be dragged overboard and drown if not for your trusty leatherman... or if your girlfriend is kidnapped and tied up under the pier and you and your dad have to work together to free her from her ropes before the tide comes in and she drowns, and also Lassie saves Jules at the same time. You know. That sort of thing. All I have to go on is my 29 years of life experience with camping, traveling, kayaking, climbing, etc. where I have never once failed to accomplish a task because I didn't carry a knife with me.
>>
>>2764686

>seriously you sound retarded
Your implication game is strong, but it doesn't change my life experience. I was out camping in a tent for a week with my best friend and never once needed a knife. I had one in the trunk of my car, and never once took it out. I see the merits of bringing a knife when you do certain knife-centric tasks (fishing, for one, would be difficult without it) but most people's daily lives don't include those tasks. Stll:

>You're welcome to tell me all the times you've needed one. That might sway me I suppose.
>>
>All I have to go on is my 29 years of life experience with camping, traveling, kayaking, climbing, etc. where I have never once failed to accomplish a task because I didn't carry a knife with me.

Bullshit. Just about every climber I know would never argue against carrying a knife for any reason whatsoever and just tell you to use your fingernails, teeth, or keys
>>

You don't use tools. congrats, you're a fucking neanderthal.
>>
>>2764686
>you
I've posted literally twice in this thread. This is my third.

As far as use goes, I generally use my knife daily. Notice that I'm not calling into doubt that you've managed to get through life without one. Notice I'm not claiming it's a necessity. That said, I won't willingly go a day without carrying a knife or a lighter because I generally have use for them. Frankly, in my life, I'd rather have a knife or a lighter than a cell phone. There's nothing my phone does that can't wait until I get to a computer to do it.

But that's my life and my needs. You might not have the leeway I have in doing things like not answering emails until the end of my business day. Your boss might have to approve whatever meetings you have before you can schedule them. My life isn't your life, just as your life isn't my life.
>>
>>2764686
I worked in a shop that made luxury boat covers and I used it anywhere from 10-15 times a day whether in the shop or on the road

You say 'being the guy with the knife' is a bad thing though. I've been on a trip or out on a boat and had people ask me to use my knife multitudes of times because it's not hard to just keep one clipped onto your waistband

>I am not a climber, I have gone climbing probably a dozen times in my life. Never needed one.

Sounds like you were probably climbing with people more experienced than you or in a more controlled environment. You've never had to cut a new cord or clean an anchor. Climbers rarely argue about carrying knives and more so about which knife is the most useful

I use my knife and multitool a ton at work, but I suppose my case is a bit atypical. I work in an automotive fabrication shop, and though I'm technically the PR/sales guy, I end up helping out with actual work a lot in my downtime. I open a ton of packages, including ones that are bound in those stiff nylon straps that are pretty much impossible to open without some kind of bladed tool. We also do a ton of welding and I use my MT to cut MIG wire, TIG rod, etc.

Aside from work, I carry my knife as a lifesaving device. I do a lot of canyon driving, and people crash quite a bit up there. My knife is a Benchmade Triage, which has a glass breaker and seatbelt cutter, and I've used both to extract people from wrecked cars on multiple occasions. It's also nice knowing that it'll be right there in my pocket so I can break myself out of my own car if I fuck up and find myself hanging upside down with a locked seatbelt and jammed doors.

I gave in and took one of these after a week of staring at this damn thread.

I'm an ex pro photojournalist who's back in college because photography is a stupid way to try to make a living and I was sick of spending 24/7 hunting for work, being on the road constantly, and making shit money at the end of it.

Great phone, when you do get around to upgrading, you'll really like the S6 Active.

Nice, a gx1. Is that the 14mm or 20mm?

no wonder you were stupid enough to think you could make photography a viable career path

It's alright, the camera sucks in anything but great light, though. I'm actually thinking of getting a CM1 now that I'm not working in a "rugged" environment, and it'd give me performance similar to or better than the GX1 but without having to carry a separate camera.

>>2766521
It's the 20mm, great little lens and the only one that's ever on this camera for stills. (I have it hacked for high bitrate video and use the kit lens for that.)

Yeah, I know, quitting is definitely on my shortlist. I keep trying, making it a few weeks, and then going nuts and getting back on.

I actually did pretty well with photography. It went from a side thing to successful enough that I dropped out of college to do it full time, and the money seemed pretty damn good as a 21 year old. It's just that as I hit 30, that same money was starting to seem pretty shitty, and the industry has totally gone to hell in the last 10 years.

I was only making 30-40k a year after expenses as a photog, and then took a PR position for around 60k a few years ago and did it for a while. I've had a bunch of big corporations try to recruit me for 100k+ jobs; I have specialty knowledge and skills from my journalism niche that are in demand for PR, but they always pull the offers when they find out I don't have a degree, so I'm working on fixing that.

>always pull the offers when they find out I don't have a degree,
If there ever is a fucking revolution or one of those "murder is legal" days, I can promise you, HR shits will be the first against the wall. They have literally fucked our country.

Could you not swing similar deals as a consultant? Usually you get to bypass faggotassed HR fucks as a consultant.
>>
>>2766551
That's kind of what I was doing at my old place, but it sucked. No W2s, no benefits, crazy hours, constant fighting to get paid on time, and no real argument when they'd lump extra work on me. (Which was pretty much always, and I got paid fairly for it, but working 6-7 days a week with insane hours got old fast. Money is kind of useless when you've got no time to spend it.)

And yeah, HR fucks are the bane of my existence. I've had some really, really awesome offers from department heads and then had the shitlords in HR shoot them down.

no its retards going to school for dumb as shit liberal arts degrees taking jobs that dont require any degree. then employers say, well why should we hire anyone without a degree when we have tons of applicants that are college educated. and there are people like dipshit bernie sanders who wants to make uni free so every dumb as shit retard can get a degree in some worthless shit and feel entitled to a job, further saturating the market and devaluing a university education
