Hi guys. Just putting up a thread for a 3 month trip away. Currently in Abu Dhabi airport waiting 7 hours for flight #3. Kill me.

Here's the first photo, coming in over the alps, editing on a pos laptop, so fuck knows what the colours are like.

I hope you enjoy.

Aigght, so Abu Dhabi airport officially sucks dicks. All the power plugs are switched off when the cleaners aren't on. I have a few more from London city airport > Rome airport.

Some of the images are similar, that's because I don't know what ones I like most so far.

Let's start at the beginning with this little triangle that set off my autism cannon at London city airport.

More alpine action.

It was incredible watching the sun rise over the mountain range, great way to start a holiday, do it tomorrow. The thing that looks like a sun is actually glare from the secondary glazing on the plane. This was the best I could get to minimise it.

This thread is great.
I heard that if you split tone all of your shots teal and orange you'll get heaps of fb lieks, is this tru?
>>
>>2719351
This is good purely because you were in an airplane, and the light was good. It's very poorly processed (visible banding, wtf) and the composition is only so-so

>>2719435
thats a circle not a triangle, and again the processing is atrocious

>>2719436
why did you post this

>>2719440
wasted opportunity, like the first but much worse. You were in a good place, and had a good shot, but you fucked it.

>>2719454
I'm beginning to get bored of babby's first plane trip now, have you landed yet?

>>2719455
hamfisted composition. tried to do something cliche, but did it poorly. that's a negative score.
You couldn't even get lines in your corners, or at least keep them spaced evenly?

From someone who constantly comments that photos are exposed strangely, and have poor colors, this thread is especially funny, but if I didn't know it were you, I'd enjoy:
>>2719455

The rest are really boring shots of nothing, exposed and colored strangely to try to bring some interest into them. Also, blown highlights on your face in your selfie? For shame.

Exposing for the surface of the sun is an interesting approach...
>>2719440

When the sun is up that high? We have a name for it. We call it "day". And during the "day" the sky isn't usually black...

these two are mare favorites, nicely captured. With the landscape from the window, the lower half is slightly darker than the upper half but I guess that's because of the plane window. Did you have a polarizer with you?

like the ideas in these ones, but there's distracting elements in them (trash cans in the top one, that water dispenser on the bottom one) that make them slightly weaker

Rest is meh imo. Still looking forward to the other pictures though

Poor WB, sky looks attrocious and semi-posterized, decent but expected composition. This is probably the strongest shot you've ever taken, if it didn't look like you'd edited it in Gimp on an LG phone.

>>2719435
Overexposed and over-yellow. should have cropped another window in to remove the bisected landing gear. Bisected lane line at the bottom could also have been avoided.

>>2719436
Poor skin care regimes take their toll :^)

>>2719440
Wasted opportunity, especially with the diagonal contrail or whatever. This composition is completely non-existent, as if you had no trace of thought towards the photo except for an intentionally wild underexposed.
A centered horizon with equal falloff to blacks in the sky and mountains could have been a powerful shot, particularly with the contrail accent, instead you just have another sky shot with a poor white balance. Neat looking, but purely a product of its location.

>>2719454
Do I really need to tell you the turbine or whatever that's visible out the window is detracting from the shot?
Not that it matters, this is pretty deletable anyway.

>>2719455
You claim to be autistic but you're "chuffed" at this geometry? Explains the glasses..

>why are you posting your own photos, that you've already posted many times before, in someone else's thread

>at least he's trying...
hahaha

The photos can't be separated from the artist. If he was a nice guy who talked about how he was learning, and supported others, and was supportive of the idea of creative exposure control and color editing, we'd be okay. In stead, he spends his time being ridiculously technically critical of any exposure he deems "incorrect" and goes so far as to claim that any colors he doesn't like in an image are wrong. not unpleasant, or subjectively off, just plain wrong. He'll call you a retard because of it. So to see these photos that are almost exclusively exposed WAY the fuck off the mark, defended with "I preserve highlights" (Uh, no you don't, a great deal of these have blown hightlights) and "I choose an aesthetically pleasing pallette, you just boost ugly colors" is fucking hysterical.

His shots out the window of the plane are about as creatively demanding as putting Planet Earth on your TV and taking photos of the screen, and he still managed to fuck them up, compositoinally. The photos on the ground are literally of nothing, and he's tried to make them seem interesting by drastically under-exposing, because everyone knows that silhouettes of boring shit are much more interesting than actually being able to see things you're looking at. But he's stated many times that he has mental problems, so being able to identify a scene that would be pleasant or interesting to a fellow human is outside of his realm of abilities, as is on display here.

This is not /p/ beating up a cripple who's trying.

This is /p/ reacting to the guy who sits courtside for a year telling everyone playing that they're fucking shit, and then stands up and gets in the game, only to pitch 7 airballs in a row and then trip over his own pants, WHILE CLAIMING THAT HE'S DOING IT RIGHT.

translates very easily to:
>I'm defensive and can't be objective about my work at all. Can't you see that there's a reflection on the ground? I've seen photos with reflections get good praise before, so clearly my photo is good too. I don't understand why someone wouldn't like this poorly exposed photo of nothing, because it has a reflection in it! Photo 101 told me to look for things like reflectoins so I did! I did it the way a book taught me! You're an idiot because you don't know how right I am!"

It's a photo of a photo, man. It's not interesting, and all the crushed black shit in the middle is distracting as fuck. If the silhouette was doing ANYTHING AT ALL, it might be better, but it's not interesting in any way.

It's sad how you assume the only person who might disagree with isi in this thread is moop.
>>
>>2720055
>And yes, I exposed for the highlights so I got the over the top colours. Some people are clearly enjoying them :)

"If you shoot a shot at night, and it looks like daytime, you've overexposed, what's so hard to grasp about this? The photo looks distinctly wrong because of OP's "decision" to overexpose a night time shot. It's hardly like I'm the only person to point out his shots look like shit."

>>2719467
Why is this being posted? It's impossible to even tell what body position the seated person is in, so any intended connection between him (her?) and the models is impossible. The only remotely interesting element of this is the reflective floor. It's a pretty run-of-the-mill advertisement, too. Not enough artistic value to validate forcing a viewer to consume it.

Not trying to be a dick, just hopefully asking questions that will lead to be better understanding on my part of the photo and on op's part as well. It's tough to understand intent when the photo is heavily effect-ed, though because the artist was seeing something so different than what I'm currently seeing.

The thing that grabbed me was the triangle formed between the plane door, blue trolley and window of the truck, which is then mirrored in the triangle of the rear wing. As I said, autism, I get that not everyone picks up on shapes the way I do (not implying superiority, this is just what makes my brain splurge)

Yeah, please don't remind me it won't be in imax by the time I get back and my first viewing will probably be on the 10" screen on the back of the plane seat infront of me in March. Life is unfair.

In other news, isn't it about time you got a passport and left north America.
>>
>>2720359
I've still got plenty of North America left to see before I tromp overseas.
Not everyone fetishizes the exoticity of the first-worlder-overseas, or mistakes the exoticity for anything but what it is- interest in something novel.

The lack of which in your drab home country has sent you overseas. Such is life on a small European island nation. :^)

>>

But massively lacking in cultural diversity.
Which shows in people that haven't ever left.

And it wasn't an invitation to India, I'd be just as happy for you if you went past Mexico. You don't work, so there's not really anything stopping you.

For someone that comments I don't leave my basement, you sure have a problem leaving your back yard.
>>
>>2720389
>But massively lacking in cultural diversity.
Sounds like someone that's never actually visited America, or experienced anything other than its meta-culture.

New England is very different from Georgia, which is very different from Louisiana, which is wildly different from Texas, who is pretty much the polar opposite of California. Until you get to North California, where it becomes more like Alabama, which is kind of like Georgia, but with a much broader variation in culture from point to point in the state.

American metaculture might be absolutely retarded, but it's also very surface-level. And your insistence that it's all there is paints a clear picture of who is truly lacking in an understanding of cultural diversity.

>leaving your back yard
India has closer consideration to Britain's backyard, in a historical context, than Arizona or New Mexico have as Alabama's backyard.

You ain't no cultural anthropologist, son. You're a westerner exploiting economic advantage to photograph the exotic. And there's nothing wrong with that, really, until you start getting high and mighty about it as if you're off on some noble visionquest. :^)

Ya see how this works around here isi.

I give photo feedback that's fairly cutting, gets cutting feedback in return.

You are a nasty, conniving human, everyone hates you.

If you weren't so ashamed of your actions you wouldn't find it necessary to write facebook epitaphs to every person you upset. Nor would you find it necessary to remove all the contact details from your website. :)

I don't know your opinion of me Ricky, but I always thought you were a fairly decent bloke and it sucks that some people can be such mindless dick heads.

Oh and isi, I found your mum on my patio this morning, pic related. So sorry.

You can blame me all you want, but the facts are this:

Cjdavies called the cops on you.
You heard from 4chan I did it, because people meme at the suggestion of things.
You chose to go on IRC under a sockpuppet and insist that I did it. You were asked not to talk about the situation, because on your *real* account you'd asked it not to be brought up. You insisted on doing so, and insisted on spreading lies regarding it by tying it to me.

The problem is your own behavior.

Hold it against me all you like, my concscience is clean. I'm not cjdavies, and I also told no one anything improper. You on the other hand did sockpuppet me, not long after you complained to me of Ayya doing such things to you.

Any issue we have between us is your own creation.

Basically the irc contingent decided to call the cops on someone under the pretense that he was depressed and potentially suicidal. Whereas the reality was they called the cops on him because he got under their skin.

Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves and consider killing themselves, because the last thing a depressed person needs is police hammering on the door in the middle of the night.

Isi, Sakurai, cjdavies, kmcdon and agnotologist, ayya and anyone else in the irc at the time basically drove someone out of their own home through fear.

And some wonder why people think this is such a toxic place.

>>
>>2720928
Just a quick question for clarity, as I'm new to this:
It seems as though a visit to your house from police worried about your safety after a bout of suicidal depression seems like it would be different than having your front door kicked in by 10 armored SWAT member who throw you down and pin you to the floor...

So what actually happened? And why would any visit from the police cause you to flee your house in fear...

To an outsider, this all really comes across as "I played the pity card to my friends, and they bit the bait too hard, and it messed up my life for a minute, but I want to blame them for it, rather than manning up and taking responsibility."
>>
>>2720823
>Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves and consider killing themselves, because the last thing a depressed person needs is police hammering on the door in the middle of the night.
FYI, nothing could be further from the truth. Potential suicide cases where authorities intervene rarely attempt suicide again because they are forced to get treatment.

20mm because it's a new toy
28mm because it's my only native lens and useful for autofocus snapshitting
35mm shift for panoramas
50mm because 50mm
85mm probably unnecessary, but it found it's way in anyways
135mm because it's tiny and the longest lens I own

I can justify carrying this many lenses for a few reasons, the rest of my stuff fits in the daysack of my backpack, I travel light. I use an A7 and the weight and space savings are very noticeable and apart from the 20mm and 85mm they are very compact legacy lenses.

I also have a chunky laptop, flashgun, sony c3 second body and a carbon fibre tripod with me and I still have room left over in my 60+10 litre pack.

5 of pic related and a pair of board shorts is all the clothes i brought. my sleeping bag is a sleeping bag liner.

hows your trip so far? I know how hot and polluted that place is but are you having fun? It's a new experience I can imagine for someone that hasnt been to India. If you hit up a Shiva celebration or someplace that worships Shiva (more than just a temple) you can probably make friends and get weed. Shiva loves weed and it's divine in hinduism.

Also, >>2722099 this photo is a bit off. Instead of the -7.4EV, just put a longer shutter speed. The image will turn out cleaner. You don't need to worry about star trails, it's a pretty wide lens you're using. And focus from the Live View.

wish you well man, have fun and keep posting.

I was definitely talking about the giant spider in my room, you ball guzzling simpleton.

Went out to take photos last night as there was lightning, wanted the 20MM up near the fishing boats on the beach with lightning in the background. Apparently I'm not allowed on the beach at night in case I drown, so could only take photos from the glaringly lit promenade which fucked all the contrast And made for boring compositions, and I can't take photos on the beach in the day as "the other people do not like" I've got an nd10 on you fucking dildos.

Speak in posh, clipped English and you'll gain their respect. Then a little baksheesh and a promise not to go near the water should do the trick.

If it's low season there could well some nasty rips coming in off the Arabian Sea so it may well be a good idea to keep out of the sea unless you are a strong and confident swimmer.

You should try and get up to Ooty, about 80-90k north-north east of Coimbatore and go see the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. It's rather special

I think the problem is that extremely few Indians know how to swim.

>Am I not allowed standard tourist photos to remember my trip?
Dude, you are hard on everyone on this board when you are off your meds trying to "critique" people. You suggest that anything that isn't perfect shouldn't even been taken, and anyone taking boring empty shots should be shot themselves. You're being judged by the criteria that you yourself have set. You stood on a boring empty street with absolutely nothing to look at, and took at LEAST 3 photos of absolutely nothing. What are you remembering with those photos? that one time when you couldn't go anywhere interesting at all, and had to stand on a totally generic sidewalk in shit light? Wow. Great.

You're supposedly a photographer. In India. One of the most photographically rich and dense countries in the world, and you're taking those three photos.

We've all always known how much of a shitty armchair technician you are, but we always assumed you'd at least try to hide it from us a bit, and play the part of someone who actually knows what a successful photo is. Apparently you can't even look at your own photos with any objectivity or sense of reality.
>>
>>2723124
>Not to mention they're still more interesting than most of the rpt.
They are exactly as interesting as any photo of any empty street or "person being boring in a restauratn" in the RPT. Exactly so.

You won't trip to be filtered, but at least you are containing all your terrible photos into one thread that can be minimized. Genuine thanks for that.
>>

>why don't you take photos in the day?
>Where in India are you?
>can you try meet a "sadhu" and take a photo?
>more photos pls?

No one in India gives a flying fuck about photos being taken around them so just keep shooting.
>>
I have to say, as someone that's followed the drama between you and isi involuntarily, this thread really paints a clear picture to me; it's jealousy.

isi takes more interesting photos than you, and it tears you up. You went to India and came back with sub-RPT stuff. Shamefur dispray.

how do i become a patrician

I dont get composition at all. It seems every ones idea of good composition is almost completely up to taste other than a few obvious no-nos which I don't really see that much of.

I mean I dunno i guess this dudes photos are a little artsy fartsy and generic looking, but they are still kind of nice.

Just everyone keeps on talking about geometry and shit and subject matter being close up. Why can't subject matter be smaller or why does everything have to be perfectly straight.
>>
>>2723373
>how do i become a patrician

read. and watch good docus. theres a thread here right now with photo docus, watch it and youll see people light years beyond what you can find on this thread.

>I dont get composition at all.
>Why can't subject matter be smaller or why does everything have to be perfectly straight.

subjects can be ant small. or photo can be tilted as fuck. question is: do these characteristics add up to the photo? do they detract from the photo? its all about efficacy and skill to deliver a message (or a worldview).

photos in this thread are all over the place in terms of composition and post processing. thats what happens when you dont have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish, so you try and try things. its all literally neophyte tier.
>>
>>2723379
But I'm still better than isi
>>
>>2723364
The photos from the plane are okay, but exposed for shit, and very very easy to do. Literally anyone with an aisle seat can (and often will) take them. And he doesn't even get average credit because his skies are black in the middle of the day.

The rest are all just "point the camera in a random direction at a random time and press the shutter button" as there's no content, no concept of the "the moment" and nothing to look at at all.
>>
>>2723373
>I dont get composition at all.
Composition is just the way of organizing things in the frame. Yes, people have different tastes, but generally, it's about balance, and minimizing distracting, while trying to keep the viewer's eye on the subject. You can start to understand it pretty easily with a bit of practice and thoughtful practice, and while opinions do differ, there's usually a pretty strong bell curve of most people more or less agreeing on composition.

The subject can be small, but then the rest of the photo had better support that smaller subject. Usually, if someone is complaining about a small subject, it's because the rest of the frame is distracting, and unpleasant, in light of that subject. And lines should be straight most of the time because take your time and do your photo right. Having a crooked perspective makes the viewer feel a certain way, and if that off-balance look hurts your intent, then it's a bad thing.
>>
>>2723305

>Kovalam, Kerala atm
Kerala is a really touristy area. Never been there myself but it's said to have some awesome beaches and lots of middle aged western women slopping goop on their faces at expensive spas and resorts.

>sadhu
I would guess there are not too many around there but here is a protip. Most sadhus, snake charmers, beggars etc will expect to be paid PER PHOTO and they will count the clicks so put your shutter on silent.
>>

>Most sadhus, snake charmers, beggars etc will expect to be paid PER PHOTO and they will count the clicks so put your shutter on silent
There's a difference between expecting something and being obliged to something. Do you legally have to pay them, or will they just harass the shit out of you if you don't?
>>
>>2723394
>exposed for shit
Oh no, I made creative decisions instead of needle matching
>anyone can do
Uh-huh, show me yours, I bet they have less engaging composition and more boring processing, or you don't have any.
>aisle seat
Nigger you dumb
>random direction
Please, elaborate, the only shot that has a non standard subject and composition is >>2719435
>no concept of timing
The only 2 shots that required a decisive moment feature lightning and a plant shooting out of someone's head. And the plane photos I got about a 30 second window to recognise, compose, focus and expose.

Nigger, if you're gonna be so salty, don't make your arguments so easy to disassemble.

>>2723373
>>2723396
For my more successful photos I find that subject comes second to aesthetic and geometry. Gursky is fairly anti-subject yet still easy to digest. But yes, some things draw us in and are "pleasing". Similar to how our tastes with food can vary massively but common pairings like sweet and sour are popular the world over from duck a l'orange to pathia with coconut rice; Which also works as an analogy for subject and anti-subject.

>>2723379
>dont have a clear vision
Get holiday photos, I can't force my more serious photos to appear everywhere I go.
>processing
All the contrast, hinting towards a warm peachy feel in the colour ones. No, they aren't all cookie cutter sooc jpg presets like isi, I'm happy with this, each photo has been taken into consideration. I'm not opening an exhibition of these as a set.

I've been to USA twice, each to find something new to explore. Will never go back, as it's a shithole like India. I was in NYC for New Years and it's absolutely bollocks. There is nothing in USA that other countries don't have the equivalent of and better and what's most revolting and uninviting to me are the people (rather the majority not all) rude, depressed.

And if you think the diversity between states is something you can count as diversity, you have a lot more to travel. Sure it was a great experience but I've seen all of USA and nothing there makes me want to go back. Heck I'd rather chill in Norfolk Islands again for the 4th time, maybe see Canada again or New Caledonia, heck even down south to Invercargill would be a nice drive from here. At least there I don't have to take off my shoes at the customs or fear for my life because some crackhead 5 year old decides a shootout will be fun.

This is getting a bit embarrassing now guys, he clearly has a better idea of how to compose and process than most of /p.

Moop calm down. And maybe hold off on editing until you get back to your normal screen, because these are some of the worst work I've seen from you. they look like they're coated in pee.

Challenge: try to get a photo of an interesting person from the front, from less than 400 feet away, like you're not a coward. Less birds and backs, more story telling.
>>
Go to India and come back with bokeh birds on boats rofl
>>
>>2724372
This. Very much this.
>>

I know you think that people don't realize that you're trying to hide your lack of photographic skill behind those poor trolling attempts, but you know, we actually do.
>>
>>2724372
I think you linked to the wrong post there bud.
But today I went to a sisp school for disadvantaged kids and took some photos for their website in exchange for a tour round the school.

It was one of the most heart wrenching days I've ever had, but you will be glad to hear there are photos of people.

This afternoon i learnt to surf, so I'm fucking exhausted, so no pics today.

There's not a lot of story telling to be done in this spot, as I've mentioned its a very touristy spot filled with government officials and pilots, but I have many more places to go. I leave here tomorrow.

I'm editing on the go so I don't have to sift through thousands when I'm home, for sure every starred photo will be revisited when I have a good screen and a mouse.

>There's a difference between expecting something and being obliged to something. Do you legally have to pay them, or will they just harass the shit out of you if you don't?

The latter. They do it primarily for the benefit of tourists anyway and they usually tell you the price before they let you start. In those situations I would usually shoot 5-6 bursts of about the same number of frames then delete most of them at editing stage. (After all you are looking for pics with eyes open, mouth closed and fingers out of nostril and you don't want to have to go back to re-shoot). It;s astonishing how fast they can add it up.

In truth it doesn't add up to that much and it is their way of earning a living. But I've only ever known it to happen in India and Nepal.

Yeah, im so done with this fucking laptop.
Every colour looks blown the fuck out in Lr, histogram is fine. Everything is far too fucking blue. And this trackpad is making its life mission to be a dick.

See you in a couple of months!

Heres a photo of a doggo from my new £90 asus phone that has the best photo tools ive seen on a phone, for taking pics it has a good low light mode (uses 4 pixels per pixel), super resolution for 52mp images, full manual controls, long exposure mode (doesnt need an nd filter in daylight) and the photo editing app is pretty much a fully featured bit of kit with shadow/highlight control, rgb curves, sat and vibrancy and plenty of other useful shit. Its ridiculously better for photos than my old sony z3. If it did raw i would jizz my pants.

i can't believe asus paid moop to advertise on 4chan

and didn't supply him with their own photo

I'll excuse your terrible editing because it is fairly obvious the laptop is fucking with you
but

>you went to fucking India
>the place where you get Nat Geo tier shots even if you're not trying (one of the reasons why many people don't like McCurry that much)

And you come back with... this?
Wtf m8.
I had a friend with absolutely zero photographic knowledge go there and come back with plenty of cool shots. With a Fuji P&S. Pic related, not awesome or amazing but it's a decent shot, she had better ones but I don't have them saved. You came back with nothing that could be better than this literal snapshit, I've never seen anyone come back with so little from fucking India.

Those are average plane snapshits with really bad editing. There's nothing autist in this, OP fucked up.

The screen just doesnt have the dynamic range for me to edit with confidence and the colour shifts from different angles is too extreme without a desk.

Have another off my phone.
>>
>>2727542
I'm glad you like them. They're not good, though.
There is a vast difference between "I like this" and "it's objectively good"

This is /p/, not facebook, plane snapshits can be interesting - these are just snapshits, he didn't give a shit for them so much that he shot them wrong and his attempts to recover the photos destroyed any quality they might have had. The one with the clouds is a black & white with no white, for fuck's sake, the brightest "white" is a very dull R199 G199 B199, greyer than grey.

Ive been to 2 beach tourist resorts over run with tourists so far. Why are so many people missing the fact im only about 10% through this trip? For photos im looking forward to going up the western ghats, these places so fat are just pure chill the fuck out in fake easy india. Its the equivalent of going to diznee worl and people lamenting the lack of grand canyon photos.

Have a fishing boat at night off my phone

Because you know how much contrast the original raw had, right? And raised black points are a new thing. Lol

Even when people red penned other peoples photos half the board complained it was shit crit.

P has crit. Just those that are pissy little cumnuggets that get their shots torn to bits try and ruin it for everyone else.

Just observe the amount of manchild crybaby faggots in this thread because op has given them crit & bants in the past.

Back onto the "blame everything that disparages what i say on moopco" train of thought.

You're a perfect example of the crybaby manchild that anon was talking about.
