Skied up to this cabin, an easy three hour trip to get to this beautiful secluded cabin wthout electricity and running water, where we got drunk by candlelight before skiing back down the next day.

I largely skipped this season because of financial (and a few personal) reasons. Unfortunately it turned out to be banner year at the mountain I would have been working at so I'm kind of kicking myself.

Ive never been skiing and I have a fear of people making fun of me if I try to learn new hobbies/sports, or even if I try to do ones I like with other people.

So I just pretend I dont want to and make excuses when people ask why I dont try it. Im actually really curious about it but the whole culture seems intimidating and arrogant.

I avoid rock climbing for the same reason. I went with a friend once and it was ok, so I bought shoes, but he got a different job and now I never see him. I've dropped hints at other people who climb but never get the invite to try it so I just assume Id be too much trouble when they could be doing cool stuff.

Come to think of it, I also avoid swimming because Ive forgotten how since childhood and fear having to re learn, and I don't do competitive shooting like I want to try because I know I wont be great at it and I have a friend who does it and would inevitably be at the same event as me.

Social anxiety is a right motherfucker, /out/. Ibwas not made for this world.

Anyway, it was a tremendous ski season here. I actually work part time fire/ems at our local resort and they had huge crowds all having great ski days. Wish I could've tried it.

Oh man, that sounds terrible.
I can relate to your fear of making a fool of yourself, but not to a degree that made me stop doing the things I love.

I hope you can overcome your anxiety and not let it stop you from doing the things you want to do forever.
Remember what David Foster Wallace wrote; "You'll stop caring about what tohers think of you, when you realize how seldom they do".
Most people have more than enough trying to not make fools of themselves to have the time to ridicule others. The ones that do find the time can go fuck themselves.

I really hope you can get a grip on your anxiety and try out some stuff. Skiing is very possible to do by yourself, and bouldering is a very fun form of climbing imo that can be done alone if you want.

Since you already have the shoes, maybe see if you can find a bouldering gym nearby? If that's too much, most places have outdoor bouldering within reasonable distance too, where you could go and be alone.

As for work I usually just work in one of the lodges as a houseman. It's braindead easy work and I get a bed and a ski pass.

Ive thought about trying cross country at least since its a lower entry cost and theres trail systems accessible without having to go all the way up the hill. Then maybe downhill or whatever.

I should look in to some bouldering spots. There is a bouldering gym here but theres usually quite a few people at it and yeah, pretty darn social. But maybe Im just overthinking all this like you say. Actually Im sure that I am, its just hard to get past it all.

My skis just look a little different.

Carry avalanche gear and know how to use it effectively and efficiently.

Snow here's getting hard, lots of loose wet slide activity lately as the snowpack starts to go monolithic and daytime temps warm up.

Racing next weekend.

The weather was pretty good today, -3 degrees and no clouds in sight. Perfect day for a ski trip. Stopped at a cabin and had coffee with a guy that had spent a night in there.

Dude, I'm in exactly the same boat. That's the exact reason I cant ski. Well, not downhill at least.

Back in school, I was interested in sailing so a friend suggested we take a course.

During the first class, the instructor demonstrated indoors how to switch sides in the boat when making a turn, how to hold the ropes and such, before we get to try it out on the lake. Then he asked everyone in the room to take turns to try it out.

Every single one before me did it on their first try, no problem at all. Then it's my turn. Naturally, I do something wrong. He makes me do it again. I make another mistake. By now, I feel the piercing gaze of every single person in the room in the back of my neck. My heart starts pounding like crazy. Instructor notices and comments on it. This makes it even worse. People start to whisper. Please god just make it stop.

That was one of the worst experiences in my life. So yeah, I can relate. Shit sucks.
