i used to make trails behind my house. I usually set out with a rake, bow saw, and machete. The rake does a damn good job at uprooting vegetation you can more or less swing it through the air and cut down on vegetation without getting too close.

My brother made a trail in his land with the smallest diesel John Deere tractor they make with a front bucket, a chainsaw and tree pruners. HOWEVER a heavy duty Weed Wacker works for me since I only want to be able to see the ground and keep the brush away enough so I don't get ticks. Do depends on what you want. My biggest feat was making a trail through the north Canadian bush for a four wheeler using only a small ax and a quest knock off Swiss army knife.
