#147-"Some Type of Bowfin" Edition

Previous Thread:

So I forgot all about the F&T Easter Santa Gift Exchangeâ„¢ but since it's spring and everybody is finally getting back out on the water again, I know we still have a couple fags that are down for another $25 secret gift exchange.

Just like Xmas, email Pepsi with what type of fishing you do and shipping info that I can pass on to whoever gets picked to shop for you. I think most people just ordered straight from their preferred website and had it shipped to the anons so it's easy and inexpensive and was a lot of fun.

What's the best knot for braid to light (like 6lb) flouro?

I tried the FG, but it seems to pull out faster than it should. I think it's because when using light line the braid won't dig into the flouro like It's suppose to. I read doing a surgeons knot with 5 wraps works pretty good, but I'm worried about castability.

I'm to the point where I use a sloppy version of a noose for everything. I can tie it supper fast and I haven't had it come undone yet.

I have a couple of those bug ones in smaller sizes but haven't used em much in forever. Never used the streamers. Mostly just regular Agilas. Agila Longs are made to run a little bit deeper but cause less vibration and noise so pick your battle. And then Black Furies have a slightly different shaped blade and I believe those cause a bit more noise than regular Agilas. If it's not a normal Agila, I will normally be using a Black Fury. There's something about those things.

Caught this nice fish today after 20 minutes of fishing. 50cm, 1,32kg.

Unfortunately the ceramics in the last guide of my rod broke right after I landed this one and I ended up losing two lures because of it, so I couldnt continue fishing. Has any of you ever had to replace the top guide before, if so how did you go about it?

Doing it wrong. Use more wraps to make a longer FG knot.
>>
>>994891
I've been using the Alberto knot for everything lately. It's just so easy to do it makes for a good knot to tie on the fly
>>
What's the best state in the US for fishing? All sorts of fishing in question, but let's say mainly lake fishing, ocean fishing being the runner up
>>
>>994944
Well the FG knot works because the braid can dig into the leader and the leader size I'm trying to use is smaller than the braid. I did 30 wrap thingies and it still pulled out.

California's main fishing attractions in no particular order:

Mountain streams and lakes for fly and regular fishing, including brown, rainbow, brook, cutthroat, and golden trout (the real ones, not gold rainbows).

Multiple rivers in the northern half of the state that have runs of steelhead, chinook salmon, and coho salmon.

Offshore fishing for a wide variety of fish including salmon, halibut, rockfish, tuna, and yellowtail.

Many fishing piers in every part of the state that let you access good fishing water conveniently, with no license requirement, and learn Spanish at the same time.

Decent largemouth/spotted bass fishing due to the large number of reservoirs in the state which produce big fish as well as the delta.

White sturgeon, largest freshwater fish in North America, can be caught here.

A lot of interesting native fish for people into roughfishing/microfishing.

Alaska would be the best fishing state hands down if it wasn't so far away though.

I had to test my new daiwa bg combo out on some pond dinks. I like it so far. I also wanted to try out tungsten weights and missile d bombs. Pretty happy with both.
>>
>>994996
I have an 8' mojo surf and there is nothing fragile about it.
>>
Tungsten works so good when fishing around rock pilings, the sensitivity is so much better than lead
>>
>>995275
My only concern is that I would use it to flip pompano and smaller fish over the pier's railings and I don't know if it can take it as well as cheaper tougher rods like my Berkley inshore.
>>
>>995279
Does it have a warranty?

Fancier brand like st.croix and shimano usually have decent warranty for their shit. You try to abuse it and use the warranty if it break
>>
>>995279
If you aren't using line with way higher test than the rod, the rod should not break before the line, especially with a decent rod. I doubt small fishes can break the rod that easily. The force flipping a small fish is also probably less than the force of casting the max weight lure rated for the rod. Surf rod are made to be able to handle strong cast so they must be durable.
>>
why is line so expensive

what the fuck
>>
>>995310
>surf rod

I'm talking about the st croix mojo inshore.
>>
>>995319
That should pretty durable as well since you need to cast from inshore after all. It depends which model you are getting as well. It also depend on how heavy the fishes you are planning to flip though.
>>
>>995230
>>995183

They have big fish populations due to low pressure and good management. On the freshwater side, there are huge pike and inconnu, salmon runs, and whitefish. In the salt there is flounder, rockfish/lingcod/greenling, halibut, and ocean salmon. I may have exaggerated about it being the best but there are some unique upsides to it.

Line and terminal tackle are literally the cheapest part of fishing. Once you get to lure buyfaggotry, you will understand.

Line is only expensive once you get offshore fishing for huge shit and deep sea where you need a lot of good quality high test lines and high test epxensive fluoro and steel leaders. If you get there, then you already at the point of high end fishing anyway.
>>
>>994950
don't do too many wraps. more than 20 ish means you can't tighten the whole thing down dueto the line getting in the way of itself.

Ive fished alaska a few times. the fishery is incredible, we caught a lot of chicken halibut, cod, giant rockfish, big lings, grayling, char, lots salmon, & trout. other than the lings and salmon the rest fought like wet towels. the butts fought a bit deep but basically were cranked in pretty easy on 80# jigging rods. I like tuna so i;m biased.

Jig heads. Go as low as 1/32oz or even smaller like 1/64 if you want more small fish.
Go as high as 3/8 oz for bass lures.

Mind that getting them weedless isn't quite easy. But I noticed that since some jig heads have light hooks that you can bend them and make them weaker so that once you snagged it, you can pull them back and bend the hook out of a snag.

I think you can rig them like a flipping hook however. I'll do that next time with beaver plastic.

Remember, for tubes put the jig head into the tube. Hides the jig head.

>>995660
This one is a tiny bit low after a stupid fucking duck wrapped itself up in the line. But basically the top side of the spool, you want about 1/8" of space left, especially with mono or flouro because it will jump off in coils if you fill it more than that.

>>995661
And yes, except if the reel says 150yds of 8lb mono, you will probably get like 200yd+ of 10lb braid. 10lb braid is close to 4lb mono diameter I think. You can do whatever line you want on whichever reel but the limiting factors are going to be how high the drag can be set on the reel and line capacity.

Also if you don't want to waste all of that braid, do like 40-50yds of 8lb mono backing because you will still have 100yds+ of 10lb braid on there and will never even see the mono if you are fishing freshwater.
>>
Anyone have recommendations for a beginning fly outfit? Looking to wade in midwest lakes/rivers mostly.
>>
>>995665
Totally depends what you're after. Most Midwest streams / rivers that are good for wading are going to hold smaller trout, so you'd be after a 5/6 weight rod. I'd go with 8' or 8'6" for maneuvering in tight spots. Dry line to match, tapered leader with 4lb tippet and flies based on the local hatch.
In lakes you are going to be looking for a bigger setup... but I don't fly fish lakes.
>>
>>995665
Also, don't break the bank. I have been fly fishing for 30 years and use St. Croix rods, which are affordable. I use cheap reels; they work just fine. Spend your money on a nice pair of breathable waders and wading boots.

I didn't even know there were carp in hear. I think they must have stocked them recently cause I would have saw this guy sooner.

Best fight I've had with a fish yet, and I was STOKED when I saw him hit my lure. Placed a crappie jig right by his side and saw him gulp it up.

This pond by my uni keeps giving.

There are some really good field guides out there. Sunfish colorings, and to some degree, patterns vary regionally within a subspecies. There are ALOT of hybrids around also. All the fish you're catching there seem to only be about 1.5 years old at most, except for the carp. I think you're ready for a bigger pond.

First time I tried going to a river it was really fucked with way too much water flow and super high sediment.

Second time I went to this secluded stream in the middle of a forest that supposedly has trout in it but I was so unconfident i didn't even get the rod out of the case. I saw small minnows (tried identifying them but couldnt) but no bigger fish despite walking it for a few miles. I really didnt have a clue where to cast since it all seemed to be fast flowing water with very very few slow moving pockets.

The guy at the fly shop told me about a section of the big river north of me that is fly fishing only and ensured me I should be able to get trout of there all summer long but idk. Like I said my confidence is at rock bottom. I dont know anyone who would be able to show me the ropes so its hard.

A chance in hell is my confidence. Cant see fish? Drift a fly while you walk to the next pool, fish will hold in strange spots and sometimes youll get a fish and think "what was he doing there?"
At the river I get my trout I never see the trout, I just hook in to them.

The biggest thing for confidence is look under rocks for bugs, and mimick those

So I should just be flipping the little black fly upstream and letting it drift down 20 or so feet every single place I walk? I seriously can't imagine catching a fish like that. I did actually get my rod out up river from where I saw that massive school of minnows but mostly that was because it was wide open and I was just practicing my casting. My fly seemed to zip down the with the current so fast each drift was only a few seconds. And that was in the slower moving portion that I walked. How many times should I let my fly drift down the same section before moving on? This is pic from down stream of that little river. I did see public fishing signs on the state forest side of the river so I'd assume that means there are fish in there somewhere but as to where exactly I don't have the the first clue.

Would they be more likely to be in the slower moving water or the fast moving shallow water? I saw minnows in both sections
>>
>>996037

>>996046
Honestly it's all an odds game. I like starting way up stream and working my way down because in pools I.can set up for 5 minutes and then just walk with my fly in the water to the next pool.
And as for drifts only lasting a short time, thats normal. When im dead drifting nymphs it's usually only 7-12 seconds, and sometimes less. Ideally you want water going about walking speed, and if youre looking to cover water with no pools, look For other cover. If you see a boulder, give it 8 drifts mininum, two on the near side, two on the front, two on the far side, then two on the rear. Usually after that I move on, but if theres a bubble line running next to it ill give the bubble line a few drifts. And if you go to 3 spots that look fishy and get nothing, change patterns. I probably cut my line every 5-15 minutes to try a new pattern.
And if theres just a nondescript hole, I get on the shallow side and do a few close drifts. Then adjust my rig, go a littke deeper, try again, deeper, try, deeper, try etc until ive gone through it entirely 12 inches at a time.

But fron hole yorhole I dead drift, because sometimes youll find a random fish holding on nothing

Incredi-Slims are a lil easier to use IMO but hard to find. Same thing but the body is thinner so they work better on a 4/0 EWG. Hard to explain but Culprit uses this harder plastic and the Incredi-Slims just seem to stay on the hook better without running a big 5/0+ hook.

Do you mean just fishing with those long ass collapsible poles?
>>

Basically you prepare a lure that you have to throw to the point where you are fishing to attract the fishes. The bait can be boilies, worms, or the very same lure. You can use a feeder too. The fishing rod (or pole?) doesn't have any reel, and they can be telescopic or fixed. Is like the traditional fishing but actualized.

>>
>>996720
Know ur spots.

Inlines I understand, but how are you hanging up the Texas rigs? Only way that happens to me is on those couple lakes with super rocky dropoffs.

I don't have a problem with that we'll just have to see how our schedules work out

>>996703
>When are you going to get a 4x4?
Good question. If I have to I can borrow my moms truck lol.

>>996720
When you feel yourself get snagged be gentle. Most of the time trying to pop something loose right off the bat is a good way to get it really snagged.

Whenever I get a lure stuck I put some slack in the line and hold the rod tip high and shake it lightly. This works for me about 75% of the time. If that doesn't work I'll take up the slack and do a couple quick jerks. If that doesn't work I'll try the bow and arrow method.

Worst case I just point my rod at the snag and walk backwards until the line break/knot breaks or the lure comes free.

Don't do the last one if you're using heavy braid though, you'll fuck up your reel. Use a wooden dowel or big stick or something to wrap the braid around and pull from that.
>>
I'm looking for an all-round lure to put in my ultralight fishing kit. Considering something like this.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>996729
Rocky drop offs must be the reason. I'm avoiding that spot til later in summer when the water level drops

Going back to my question about rod actions; i get how fishing for huge salty fish requires a big rod but how come bass fishermen need heavy ones? UL can still catch big bass and work any bass lure. At least light action is the optimal.

Are realistic swimbaits worth it? I have been fishing below a dam and am pretty sure Id smash them with a realistic swimbait.

Article I saw was saying (for bass at least) that contrast and movement seem to get them going more than anything. That's why a Junebug Trick Worm wiggling around in some green and yellow grass will get a lot of attention.
>>
>>996832
I'm guessing frogging needs a long rod to keep it on the top easier? I get that.
>>996841
Isn't fishing around cover determined by line strength? And I've taken smallies and carp on UL before, that's as strong as freshwater gets. Why do you need a giant rod for?
>>
>>996953
It really depends on your body of water. If there's big fish, clear water, and it's super pressured they'll work the best.

>>997017
>I'm guessing frogging needs a long rod to keep it on the top easier?

dude wat

Frogging needs a heavier rod because you generally frog in Lilly pads or over heavy grass.

>Isn't fishing around cover determined by line strength?
You know what why dont you put 40# braid on your UL and go flipping. Report back with your findings.

>Why do you need a giant rod for?

A heavy rod for bass fishing isn't giant unless you're a manlet.

Go frogging, flipping, or punching with your UL then get back to us.

Or go home and tie a 1/2 oz jig with a trailer and cast that around.
>>
>>997035
The guy is clearly trolling.

Go flipping with some 1 oz tungsten around cover with your UL and pull out a fish. I'll be waiting for the pics.
>>
>>997035
Froggin I've never done, I just don't fish in places like that. I will this summer since it seems fun.
And you can still catch big fish like cats on a short rod. It's more fun to have a fight with them. Although I wouldn't be using 6 lb test. Maybe a light action rod with 10lb at least.
>>997040
Why the hell would I use 1 oz of weight?
>>
>>996733
Joe's Flies are really fucking good for panfish. Get size 8 or 10 in any natural colors
>>
>>997066
>Froggin I've never done

Or punching, or flipping, or fished more than 5 feet deep.

>big fish like cats on a short rod
A couple things here. I almost gaurantee you will not catch a big cat on an UL just due to the limitations of what bait you can throw. Also, you know they make 7 foot UL rods right? The length has nothing to do with it.

There's nothing wrong with using an ultralight, but purposely handicapping yourself and saying "you don't need anything heavier lol" isn't the smartest thing in the world.

>Why the hell would I use 1 oz of weight?

For fishing deep water, grass, lay downs ect. You can't fish them effectively with light weights.
>>
>>997066
>punchin mats nigga
You gotta go heavy. Like 3/4oz+ and if you try and cast that on a light rod, the thing will just buckle and you will never get any distance.

>>997040
Lel that 1oz tungsten weight probably costs more than the most expensive Megabass memes.
>>
>>997070
Alright, thanks for teaching me something new.
You fish Texas rigged stuff with that heavy stuff right? Get it down past the top water weeds and push it through a lot more beneath?
And heavier line pulls through the stuff better than light line that can get torn up?
