is this a meme or what
>>990509
Well to tellnyou the teuth your a moron.
If you just shit once it will wash away. But if uou want to make camp you might as well buy a 4 foot shovel from home depot.
>>990514
I'm not trekking a shovel out innabush faggot
>>990509
depends, like with all other item compromises must be made between size and capability.
a little shovel like that is able to dig a shithole or a fire pit slightly faster than a digging stick can. it can do a few tricks a digging stick can't like you can even cook an egg on it, shovel some dirt on the embers stuff like that.
an e-tool has more capability and can do the same stuff way way faster but do you really need it? that's the question. but an e-tool still sucks ass if you have to do extensive ground work. like digging a trench by yourself.
>>990509
you can just bring a head and fashion the handle innawoods
>not just using a stick or a rock
what's so complicated that you need a trowel or, even more moronically, an e-tool?
>>990509
What do you need it for? Shitting? If it isn't near a camp or stream just walk downhill and post up on a tree.
Personally if i am making base camp i take a real shovel(shortened though) but if i am going on anshort hike i just cover my shit in leaves.
>>990509
E-tools is for car campers and wannabees. You won't be digging trenches on the trail so no need to bring another bulky and heavy tool.
>>992677
If I saw one of you faggots digging trenches on the trail you deserve to dissapear on said trail
>>990509
Not meme, you only need a trowel to dig a shit hole and a fire pit. E-tool is fucking heavy to lug around and meant to be used to build fortifications. You won't be building fortifications.
>>992669
those are plastic right? Any good?
>>992694
It's made of plastic and good enough to dig soil and dirt with if that's what you mean
>>992703
way better than using your nails
>>992677
useful to have in a car trunk tho.
>>992711
Right tool for every job and all, within reason. I don't care much for UL
I bring a fixed entrenching tool and a hand mattock. The weight is worth it, I find.
I cover my shit with moss since I go off trail
>>992714
>Right tool for every job and all except if it's lighter

Everytime this is posted I have to watch all of it. Well, until the blue screen that is.
>>993523
Before I watched the video, I didn't know what you meant by "blue screen" so I just assumed that you watched the video over and over again until your computer bluescreened after like the 50 000th play.
Lmao@ the half video being blue, though.
>>992787
Am I retarded for wanting one of these?
>>993482
>Too to to tutu to 2
>>992712
I just have a small shovel for winter in my trunk. It's less meme-y than an e-tool.
>>994256
No, they are very useful, if you need an E-tool.
>>993482
>"my hiking equipment consists of a plastic bag, a blanket, a knife and a lighter"
FUN
>>990509
No belt knife, no hatchet, no shovel, just a big old cheapass bolo machete like pic related. Folding pocket knife for smaller work. Am I crazy?
>>990509
It's called a trowel you fucking bint.
>>990509
Glock makes a great etool. If you are thinking about getting one, spend a few extra bucks on the glock. Trowels are better than nothing. Just do not buy a cheap ass one with a spot welded neck. Corona makes a nice one that is often copied.
I carried a Coleman mini e-tool for a while, but it was overkill for backpacking.
>>992787
what are they trying to show at 5:35
>>997654
I've never known, but I always lol
>>994450
Can you dig a latrine with it?
>>997663
Can dig a one-dump slit with it easily.

Then we've been killing it for over 60 years on thru hikes.
>>990509
I chopped a tree down with a garden shovel when is was 14. It took me two days
>>992694
>>992703
>>992711
>>992714
It's garbage.
Sause - my mother. She's a goddamn gardening maniac, she broke countless mini-shovels and talks about it every time I visit. Turns out it's quite hard to find a decent one that won't break after a month.
Even in well maintained garden you will have to deal with rocks & roots that will stress the tool a lot. Even more so in Out. Most often they break or bend at where handle turns to digging part, if I recall her words.
>>990509
I don't think it's a meme, especially when you plan to take an axe too. Though I have yet to try it. I think it might work, because this one time I was ordered to prepare firing position/foxhole in 30min and I only had a bayonet. I did not fail, so I think with mini-shovel I would do a lot better & faster.
I heard good word about those among military geardos, but don't take my word for it, for I have not used one.
And for the love of God, nobody buy that mini-shovel:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/516UYIVXTOL.01_SL500_.jpg
I got two for testing & out of curiocity, because they are everywhere. They literally fall to peaces after aplying minimum strength or trying to do some real work.
>>992681
In the trench?
>>990509
its for digging a cat hole to shit in. You're not digging a defensive position.
You might find yourself wanting a makeshift battleaxe if you meet a serial killer though. A 4 foot shovel is good for this.
>>992661
Kinda handy for digging windproof fire pits
>>990509
Yes, and it's a meme for a reason. You don't need a shovel unless you're camping in totally frozen ground, and possibly not even then.
A plastic garden trowel is light, cheap, and does the job perfectly. Hence it's the best decision, hence people always recommend it, hence it's a meme.
Meme != bad idea
>>990509
just use a fucking hatchet, holy shit you guys are retards.
>>1002334
have you ever dug with a hatchet, bud?
>>1002873
you can make a decent digging stick with a hatchet in 2-5 minutes.
>not having a small fixed blade shovel on your pack
I don't use it every time, but digging with a stick is fucking shit. I had to dig up cordage one time with a stick and since then I never left without my shovel.
>>1004633
I agree with this anon.
>digging a trench for a trench fire
>digging a safe and proper fire pit
>using a trowel or a stick for either
>nope
>>1004625
you need to filter and boil to get 99.8% of the nasties. if you want to get everything then filter boil and use chlorine and uv.
>>1004633
yeah, I'm laughing my ass off at the notoolz faggots who think a stick is a good digging tool. Might as well use your hands
>>1005666
>Satan confirmed for hastoolz
>>1005666
better than your hand or knife or your axe for sure, pretty easy to make too. one of the first few items you improvise in a survival situation.
>>990509
>not being rich enough to buy a 100% titanium trowel

>Dude misses jump
>Falls in water
>Expect them to use shovel to throw rope to him
>OARS
Theres compact foldable trowels at walmart for $5, it weighs nothing and takes up no space. Stop being faggots.
E tool can be used as a seat of sorts.
if the ground is hard and dry. your garden trowel isn't going to dig you a pooping hole. the e tool can be swung like a pick to dig into hard ground.
>>1008751
This man has a point.
You don't get to choose the type of dirt you encounter.
Most dirt is too shitty for digging without a rock bar or pick axe. A little gardening shovel is really only for gardening in pre-made beds of black dirt. No rocks, roots, clay, etc.
I carry a flat prybar that I took a file to and sharpened the edges. Decent for small digging, breaking and entering, assault, batoning wood.
>>992669
I used to carry a 2kg e-tool, now I have this. I dig at about the same speed. However not so good in a CQB situation.
> Would recommend
>>992656
just bring a piece of iron and shape in the fire

At least all the trails around me are COMPLETELY FUCKING COVERED in dog shit. Like, right in the middle of the trail. You can't go 30 fucking feet without stepping in it because there will be patches where every inch of trail for 3-4 yards will be covered in dog shit.
>>992669
I just bought one like this from Walmart for 86 pennies.
Just take an anvil with you everywhere you go, you can blacksmith just about anything you want while /out/
