on a side note, on some days it was fucking cold and miserable and wet. But then, its the highlands north of the arctic circle, so that has to be expected. On average it was cool and thats nice for hiking as you do not break a sweat.

This looks amazing OP
I always wanted to do trekking in northern europe.
Mind if I ask you some basics?
How do you get there (flights, buses, ferries...)
How much does it cost overall and where could I save (Im a poor uni student), gear exluded as I have that and I did long disrance trekking before.
>>
>>989698
Great thread OP, props to you. Check out Lars Monsen Nordkalotten show, I think you can find it with english translation.

Also, what this guy said>>990071
>>
>>990071
Theres different ways to get to Kilpisjärvi. I first visited some friends in Helsinki so I took the night train to Rovaniemi (80€?) and then the post bus from there (40€) to Kilpis. Food & provisions are best bought in Finland, it is much cheaper and for this reason there is a small shopping center in Kilpis, Norwegians make the 3 hour drive to shop...
Night on the Kilpis camp ground is around 15€. I bought some dried reindeer meat, 80€ per kilo, but then it was 4-5kg before it was dried, is free range venison, tastes great and makes for a great trekking food.

From there on it is basically free as camping is allowed. To use the huts you gotta be member of the DNT ( https://www.dnt.no/ ) , that is around 90€ a year, they give you the key for the huts, a night at the hut is €15. I had terrible weather for large parts of the tour and enjoyed the huts, warm stove, dry out your gear, hot meal, warm washing water.

To get from either Abisko or Inset back to Troms you need around €40-80.
In Troms I took a **** hotel room and got horribly drunk, it must have cost a fortune, but I can't remember. If you are on a budget, it is possible to camp inside the city of Troms (not sure if legal, but one guy did camp in the huge city park, no one bothered) and live of the super market.

You can save on making your own instant meals and bring them along, tent instead of huts and hotels, and finding a clever way to get home from Abisko. Likely it is possible to get home via Kiruna, maybe there is a bus. Troms is beautiful, but more expensive then Sweden.
If you have the time you can walk on south, Nordkalotten joins the Kungsleden.
>>
>>990096
You can take a train in Kiruna to Stockholm and then even further south.

Tromsö is expensive as fuck, however the nature there is so beautiful and the bus system there takes you to every imaginable nature. Whether you want highlands, mountains, coastline, sea, marshes etc. you can find it in Troms County and there's usually a bus travelling there.

So you fly into Helsinki? maybe 150€
Train to Rovaniemi 80€
Bus to Kilpis 40€
Night on Campground 15€
End to Kiruna 40-80€ (is this right, or were you going to Tromso? How from there?)
Train to Stockholm 90€ (looks like same distance)
(Night in Stockholm 40€)?
Flight home 150€

So overall without food at least:
565-645

So in the end it will probably go up to close to 1000€ if flights are more expensive or whatever you need on the way

Do you think it is possible to hitchhike some or most of the way?

The Kungsleden is widely known, do you know of any cheap agencies that bring you to start and pick you up from the end?

Sorry for all those Question, I'm just really interested in doing this.

Pic is Mt. Doom in NZ, if your are into LotR

>Do you think it is possible to hitchhike some or most of the way?
Yes, if you got the time and are in for an adventure. Kilpis is far out in the Pampa, but Abisko is connected to Kiruna and Troms. From Kiruna/Abisko you can take the bus or train to Stockholm for around €100.
If you go hobo style and wild camp most of the time and prepare your own meals you can save lots of money.

whats the price difference between Sweden and Finland?
>>

Fuck that's pretty.

How much of the year are these lakes frozen for? Is that why they're so deserted and undeveloped?
>>
Finnish sc/out/ here

>>990677

That high up north the lakes, such as Kilpisjärvi, are frozen most of the year, Kilpisjärvi usually thaws around midsummer.

Also what do you mean by underdeveloped? Only the Saami people that are the native people of Scandinavia and Finland live there and there aren't so much of them. Kaamos-time in winter when the sun doesn't rise for 2 months really puts people off i quess.

If you'd like i could answer some questions about trekking in Finland, it is quite different from Scandinavia though.
>>
>>989766
Looks cosy as fuck. Thanks for posting friend.
>>
>>990677
Also, did you wash/swin in there if weather allowed or would you freeze?
>>
>>990783
Well its cold, so no swimming. But I did wash on clad lakes and streams, at one point your desire for clean balls becomes stronger than your aversion against ice cold water.
In this regard, Iceland is best, the hot springs are a blessing when you hike.
>>
>>990783
The mountain huts have washing bowls and hot water is non the stove, so you can give yourself a sponge bath.
apart from that there is only cold water in streams and ponds. But then you get used to it.
Best thing is that every stream and pond is best drinking water quality, so no filter needed.
Bring a Kuksa, so you can directly from the creeks.

I sure did.
The northern parts of Norway are the most beautiful places on earth. The scenic route I drove from Kilpisjärvi to Nordkapp (North Cape) I will never forget.

In Finland we have a word 'lapinhulluus' which means craziness for the Lapland - once you get it, you will always come back. I wonder if you got it?

Thank you anyway for this absolutely great thread. I wish there were more threads like this and less ones about gear and about being a hobo.

>Now back to batoning. When you baton using common sense there is no risk of knife ever breaking. If you break your knife, it's not because it was abuse, it was because you didn't take time to learn how to baton correctly.

>I wonder if you got it?
The bug for northern Europe got me long time ago. I'm think about this summers trip, so far I am undecided between a hike along the hot pools in highlands of Iceland or another Trek in the Fjell, likely around Narvik this time.
Highly addictive landscape.
>>
>>992322
Are there any long Fjell trips in Finland?

Looks awesome! I've been eyeing up that trial! How was it elevation wise? Is it a fairly flat hike??

>How was it elevation wise? Is it a fairly flat hike?
No, it is a fairly mountainous hike with difficult terrain and river fords. Elevation is not such a killer as in the Alps, but it is still demanding. Add some swamps and Lapland summer weather make it a rounded experience.

>>992322
>lapinhulluus
I need to remember that one.

>>993136
From what I know there is some walks around the Kilpis area, but Finish Lapland is more on the swamp side and has few mountains.

Is there a name for those rock fields? Not the cairns, but the actual vast expanse of rock. Usually the rock fragments at the bottom of a slope are called scree, but it seems like the rock landscape goes in forever in your photos. Also, how do those huts stay in such good shape?

No idea whats the name, but yes, it was quite a bit of rocks that day, after some time it really fucks with your feet. Luckily that day it was dry, must be real heavy going when the whole thing is slippery
>>
>>994691
>Also, how do those huts stay in such good shape?
They get maintained regularly, the DNT has many volunteers and the fee you pay is invested in firewood, building materials and likely a helicopter transport. Many DNT members spend their holidays in the highlands, cabin building, stocking food and firewood, doing repairs and such

Also, there is a gentlemen agreement, you clean up before you leave, sweep the floor, split some wood, clean the oven, prepare it for the next guy, fill the water buckets etc. This way when you arrive at the hut after a long and miserable day in wind and rain, everything is prepared.

Often you have several buildings at a place, a big new hut or two, an older one, a shed with firewood and outhouse
Most of the time I had a hut to myself, if not, I had at least my own room to sleep.

Here >>989847 is a pic from Vuomahytta

Living in the huts is fun, sometimes you are all alone, sometimes you meet other hikers, cook together, share stories, get some info. Drink with the Finns, flirt with cute German bae, trade tobacco vs sweets with crazy Swedes, cook up fresh trouts with great Norwegians (Tom, thats you in case you are lurking).
It helps if you have some Cognac at hand for such events.
>>
>>994865
If you plan a trip in Norway, theres 3 types of huts, with service, no service but food, no food no service. All Norwegian huts on the Kilpisjärvi-Abisko route are of the later category, meaning you have to bring all your food. On other trails huts are stocked with food and you just help yourself to it, write down what you took and pay when you are back.

If you are on a budget, then team up with some friends. Like hang an add in your uni and when you got 2-3 people, go with a car, it saves loads of money as you can car camp and bring lots of food and stuff.

>>
>>995540

when i think border ranger my mind veers off to this image of a chunky bearded guy wearing camo and standing with a rifle in the middle of a desert trying to find a reason to shoot mexican immigrants

then i realized there is a part of the world where they actually pay people to walk around and sleep in small huts that have lavish decor
>>
>>995563
We used six wheelers/quads, snowmobiles, and by foot.

>>995571
There were a lot of Syrians crossing the border half a year before I served there.
In Norway enlisted soldiers are used as border rangers. So it's half a year of education and half a year of service on the border.

There are marked trails at the entry points, outside the national park borders. Inside the park borders there are no marked trails, but there are trails (well walked paths) to follow most of the time, though they tend to come and go. Most 'trails' will naturally follow the valleys.
Biggest hindrance are streams that can be impossible to cross if it's heavy rain or really warm.

There's an 'emergency shelter' and outhouse at Skarja, and outhouse at Bielavalda.

Train from Stockholm to Murjek then buss to Kvikkjokk. Or continue to Gällivare and take buss to Ritsem, you can also jump off at Saltoluokta and Suorva dam.

Yes, but you have to walk through Padjelanta/Sulitelma (marked with red dots).

>>999651
Yes, it has a bit less "dramatic" views compared to Kungsleden (Nikkaluokta-Abisko) as it's more flat, but you still have mountains around. Less people on the trail as well, but you'll probably meet people every day. If you are comfortable with walking off trail I'd highly recommend the Sulitelma area to the west.

Most are locked, and you can get a key at the tourist information shops. that costs 60 euros for DNT membership, and they ask around 8 euros per night, but you have to pay them based around trust, and unmanned huts dont get checked as far as i know.
