Hello, /out/

I have decided to start working towards buying remote ass land in Montana and possibly building a cabin or just buying a place with one already built.

Sure times, prices, and places change and I won't achieve this goal until maybe 4-6 years from now. But let's say I was buying land today with at least 20-40k in my savings.

>What location would you recommend
>How can I buy land there
>What other things can you recommend or give tips on

Also I am from Oregon, no not Portland.

I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that?

You'll need a cabin design that can handle immense snow load, and you'll need to be prepared to spend long stretches (4 months or so) entirely inside that cabin or within a small radius of it. The snow will be so deep you won't be able to travel far.

The rabbits will need to be inside the cabin with you as they will die from exposure if they aren't.

The growing season is short so you'll need to raise only fast growing crops that store well.

You'll have no utility service apart from what solar or wind you can install. Anything that qualifies are "remote" in Montana has no possibility of mains electric, or natural gas. Any gasoline or diesel you require will need to be flown in or you'll need to make your way to a town for it.

For the above winter section you'll need to spend a good portion of your summer putting up wood. So your land will need a source, and you'll need to tools to process it. Of course it is possible to do this with hand tools but it is painfully slow, so expect to want a chain saw and s supply of fuel. Splitting by hand is not too bad.

If you expect to have internet, which I highly recommend for keeping in touch with the rest of the world and for fresh porn, look for a location not more than 10 miles from a cell tower and get an account with a company that uses that closest tower. Also you will want a short wave radio, and not an Aliexpress Wun Hung Lo but a good one.

A variety of simple tools is a must. Hammers and screw drivers and pliers and chisels and saws. Easily gotten inexpensively from estate sales in farm country.

You'll want a very good set of very heavy winter clothes. And the best set of leather boots you can get your hands on. Whites or some such.

If you don't have 40k left after buying the land and putting up the cabin you should wait and save more. That is unless you have a reliable source of income.

On the skills side:

If you can't safely tell trees, process wood, make most repairs to the cabin yourself and fabricate the materials to do those repairs, practice those first. That doesn't mean read a book about them or ask on /out/ or /diy/, it means actually hands on do them.

If you don't know how to navigate by compass, take orienteering classes.

If you don't hunt or fish learn both from someone who does, preferably a backpack hunter because road hunters usually don't know shit that will help you. Make sure they process their own game.

Keeping warm is simple enough but you'll want to be sure you can start a fire under ugly conditions. Likely you'll be out fucking around somewhere and get wet and cold.

Be able to repair any complex equipment or tools you have. So rebuild the carb in your saw, troubleshoot ignition issues, sharpen the chain. Hang an axe handle, sharpen edged tools, etc etc.

Learn what wild food is common in your area and figure out where and when it can be gathered. Learn the difference between it an inedible shit or, worse, poison shit.

Honestly consider whether you can handle this. It is not idyllic and it isn't easy. You'll spend most of your time doing physically demanding repetitive work, with not nearly as much time to gaze at the splendor and listen to bird chirps as you likely imagine. There will be times when you injure yourself and have to convalesce, and you'll probably be afraid for your safety during some of those times. You'll also be lonely as fuck. Don't kid yourself that it won't be mentally hard and possibly turn you insane.
