Nothing is 'essential', but backpack/boots/sleeping bag help a lot. Essential is different for everyone. I went without a sleeping pad the first few years while homeless. I often go without a second tarp(first one goes on the ground) or tent to make a real shelter out of. Someone who isn't comfortable sleeping in a businesses doorway might consider a tent or tarp an 'essential'. I know a guy who always travels around with just a bible. Essential is hard to define.
