I do. Both small and large boat. Super red pilled hobby
>>
Jup, will be sailing around Denmark late in may... Also building a small boat for sailing on lakes here in the region
>>
>>978182
I sail, a lot grew up on it actually, mainly raced 420's and Lasers, however I have sailed larger boats as well as raced knock-abouts catamarans.

I'm not rich enough to sail but I've always wanted to

its kind of a small tub, but its sailable and its super comfy to throw it in the back of the truck and take it to the local lake.
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Construct-a-Simple-Boat/

sprit sail wasnt cutting it so i made a 40ish sqft lateen sail.
also i added proper oars and oar-mounts because the thing has terrible tracking in the water and tacking upwind takes forever even with the lateen.
>>
I'm currently in the process of buying a 60's-70's 25'-30' sailer to do a refit over the next few years.

>>978258
Not rich enough? You can get a 60's-70's glass fiber for free. Assuming you have time enough for a refit, which you should have, since you are poor.

>>978248

I personally just own a Laser, one from the Centennial Olympic games or whatever pretty nice and taking it out on the open ocean is a Blast Especially up here in Cape Cod.

You can pick up a half decent one for about, 1,000 dollars.
Really depending on where you live, i was a sailing instructor at a club when I wasn't at the summer camp. So all the rich kids from off cape would sell their boats for cheap, needed a little patch work but sails freaking great.
I really want a 420 though.

I have a 26-footer that I sail a lot with around Bergen, Norway.

Sailed to Shetland and the Orkneys from here two years ago in a 29-footer, going to try going over in mine next year.

Awesome boat man, hows the sailing over that way embracing that viking heritage at all haha?

East coast is pretty great, I used to sail to Maine quite frequently from Massachusetts.

Thanks.
It's really comfy as long as you stay off the North Sea. Usually pretty good winds, although they're always coming against you. All the fjords make things a bit tight at times, making crossing time consuming. All in all very happy with it, not very into viking culture tho.

It's not the same as US sailing I think, I guess even Maine gets some rough seas?
>>
Yeah I lived on my 7.5 m sailboat, might move back on board again this year though I'm not looking forward to the sore neck from lack of headroom.

I sail out of Dublin, though havent left the marina in a couple years for various reasons. This year is the year!

Hoping to get my mileage up to yacht Master minimums so I can maybe do the course in the near future and work on superyachts
>>
Any of you guys follow good sailing vlogs? These guys don't update often and they've been spending a bunch of time on land too, but their production is great.

What a wonderful boat you have though for real, kinda jelly. How come no viking days for you haha?
On our side of the Atlantic things get really, and I mean really fucking rough sometimes.

A buddy of mine is selling his Oday 25 in Sanford Fl
>>
>>978643
Hah, thanks.
I love the boat too, got it for 1200$ from a friend, after ha had spent 3 years fixing it up with loads of smart solutions, including a solar panel.

We get those kind of seas just a few hours from my home harbour, if I go into the North Sea, but I prefer to stay in calmer waters until I feel I know the boat 100%.
When we sailed to Shetland last time we came into a moderate gale, and it was a little too much for me.

The viking people tend to be either white supremacists or neckbeards, I've never got on with them.
>>
>>978182
man, i went sailing in a little rinky dink 10' thing on the lake with my friend.

wind changed, snapped the boom all the way around and capsized us.

been off it ever since. i'll stick to motorboating thank you very much.
>>
>>979027
I feel the same way with my Slavic ancestry, but eh, they come as they come.

Sounds pretty chill though honestly, I wish I had a boat in my possession that could make it across the Atlantic.

However the low paying job of and EMT/Paramedic is making that impossible, I mean I guess I could try with a 420 it would be a hell of a trip though.

Pic related, my ship with a makeshift forejib.

We'd sail into any water that seemed like it'd go somewhere nice with 3 boats and like 15 people. We'd sleep under bridges and eat soup for 10 days.

The three staff members would only visit in the evening to check if no one had gotten a boom in their face while tacking.

I was captain for 2 years, my bud was my quartermaster. One time we decided to sleep on our boat which was docked under the bridge as well. The bridge was located right next to a lake and we could watch the sun set while the kids got a fire going. A while later we decide it's time to go to bed
> Putting out the fire and stuff the empty soup cans in a plastic bag
>Quartermaster bud comes over and tells me it's probs gonna rain tonight
It's probs better to sleep in the boat because sleeping near the edges of the bridge would get our stuff wet
>Why the fuck not
>Check the tent pegs that we used to dock the boat
>Seems secure enough
>Pull the sails and oars onto land to make space to sleep
>Go to sleep
>Wake up from keel making noise because of a ship passing by
>Go sleep again
>Wake up in the morning
>Keel making noise again because of waves
Could've expected this
>Tent pegs don't hold a steel ship with people in it
>It didnt rain that night
>Wake up my quartermaster
>We're in the middle of the fucking lake without oars or sails
>Ask him if he's got his bluetooth speaker
>He basically sleeps with the thing
>Yes
>Thankgod.jpg
>Remove ipod from speaker charger and start charging my phone
>Call the other captains
>Still asleep

We have some sort of morning swim while we waited for the others to wake up

>Try again
>Other captain picks up phone and asks where the fuck we are
>Can you come and bring our sails and oars?
>Other captain asks where the fuck we are and why we are gone without our sails again
>tell the story

They take their time getting ready for another day of sailing and they pick us up along the way

At least we avoided morning dishes

no need to be rich, I bought a 27ft Albin Vega in decent enough shape for 7500 Norwegian Krones, 872$. inboard engine, a 12hp Albin 0-21 petrol is unfortunate defect but it will easly be pused by a 4hp outboard.

planning on sailing to Shetland this summer form Norway.

Does anyone have any advice for a first timer interested in buying a sailboat? I'm in the southern California area and am willing to put down between $1-3K.
>>
>>984373
Get a boat from around the 70, fiberglass, they still made proper fiberglass back then. Less maintainance aswell. I reccomend not getting a bigger boat than 27ft as it will be hard to sail on your own.

If you find a boat of your liking, check for osmosis, check that the rigging is still in good shape and check that all underwater outlets are proper(not leaking or rotten).

Also read up about sailboats, there are compete checklists on the internet about what you need to look for, what I provided is what you need to get a basic overview, if one of these things are bad, move on to the next, there are planty of boats out there...

Good luck!

Highly recommended. True sailing the world, blue water adventure. Also the guy who owns the yacht is not rich but works remotely as a software developer to pay for upkeep and his "crew" work for several months before setting sail. His boat is worth less than most mortgages and well the channel is just plain interesting.
>>
>>982019
Yea even tho it's small, i need to make sure to dock easily. Not too much because i'll damage the boat, but more so because the jetty needs to stay intact. It's a steel boat
>>
>>982019
Also it sails like shit. The sails are extremely out of balance. If i let the helm go for just a second it will instantly turn into the wind. That's why i install this makeshift forejib when i can. It balances the sails.
>>
>>983904
Wow that cheap? If only you have got the later models with the diesel. In what shape were the rigging and sails?
I'm looking specifically for an Albin Vega myself.

didnt change anything on the rigging itself, jib was quite done, so got another old one of my dad thats in usable shape. mainsail is still good. planning on getting a new set though for longer trips. the boat itself got a few cosmetic injuries but nothing too bad.

I do reccomend using more money for one in better shape with a functioning inboard.

Where are you from? In Norway, with abit of luck you can find them quite cheap.

I'm from DK, and I would be okay with spending up to 30000-40000DKK, quiet a few of them here as well.
You own her by yourself or is it a shared boat?
What's the size outboard?
Did you inspect her on land? - how did it all look?
Also, how is it to be a (I assume) young person sailing, it seems that 99% are retired people?
>>
>>983904
Had an Albin Vega for years and put thousands of miles under it's full keel. Got it in sail-away condition for 2000 dollerinos back in 1990. Did the Atlantic tradewind circuit on it, took me 4 months. Best pocket cruiser ever.
>>
>>985893
for that amount of money you can buy a brand spanking new one with a nice 12h diesel inboard.

my outboard is 4HP, works just fine for me, when it gets choppy in the fjords, its not enough but then you can sail so that doesnt matter. I inspected my boat on land, was in a boathouse.
Murdock(boatname) looked rough at first glance, anti fauling was peeling like mad, he was dirty, the cabin floor was coated in a layer of rust because the engine had rusted in there with a layer of water in it for a while. I washed him, cleaned him up, and it all looked great. I kind of just said fuck it its just 800$ itll float for a while. Not a sign of osmosis made me really positive to the buy aswell.

Im 22, 21 when i bought Murdock, I reccomend picking up sailing when still young, I was lucky and grew up sailing from I could walk so the boatlife is nothing new to me. I lived on it last winter, was rough but manageble. I'm currently known as ''the boat hobo'' locally though...

overall its a great experience being young on a boat, chicks love it and always wanna come along for a sail during the summers (bring 2 bottles of wine though!).
>>
>>986209
correction, was 20 when i bought Murdock
>>
>>979514
are you a dutch sea scout by any chance? what region?
>>
>>986209
A brand spanking new one? Well one that is pretty well-kept, but still old sails and 40 year old inboard diesel.

What is really expensive here is renting a spot in a harbor. It's like 12000DKK/year. Or you can buy one, but that's like 50000DKK.

As someone who has built a small skiff, DO NOT BUILD YOUR FIRST BOAT, your better off starting with a cheap used boat, whether motor or sail, so you have a baseline of performance to expect. If you do try to build a boat you are going to overlook some aspects of the boat that will vastly improve your quality of life and/or require you to redo things, which will get expensive

I took sailing classes for a small 12ft sailboat in a lake for around $200 to learn the basics.

I found a 24ft sailboat for sale on craigslist and got it for $1400 with some friends so we split the cost. the most expensive part is maintanance and docking fees each month.. it just adds up over time.

but i haven't been able to sail this bigger boat yet on my own because the radio and engine and a bunch of stuff need to be repaired before taking it out.

but i highly recommend sailing small boats in a smallish lake. its relatively safe (compared to ocean / bay sailing with freighter and such going around). you don't really need technical knowledge of radios and such, you can just practice pure sailing knowledge and skills.

1. Find a local sailing club
2. Participate in the annual "Intro to Sailing" or "Learn to Sail" community outreach that we all have (because we are all losing membership and need new blood).
3. Go there to sail and not for a ride on a sailboat.

I got the tiller down but still need to better understand sail position in the close haul / broad reach spectrum. Doesn't help the river basin I sailed in is notorious for changing wind direction constantly.

Been using a Bayfield 29 for the past 3-4 years on the great lakes, moving up to an early 2000s jenneau sun Odyssey 43ds (pic related, this model) now that I've moved to the Atlantic coast. Gonna be taking it transatlantic since I can get one for $30-50k cheaper in the Mediterranean than in North america, probably from Croatia or Italy. Also looking at finishing the last course I need to get my Yacht Master designation this summer.

I don't have the time. Dad doesn't have the time. Uncle doesn't have the time. Ain't no body got the time. Grandpa's Catalina is just rotting away in dry dock. No one's been on it in 10 years.

Flickas are super overpriced.
I get why they have such a following but it's inflated the price of a 30 year old boat to a silly degree.

Agree, but Pacific Seacraft made them to last; and it's probably the only twenty footer you could live aboard year round. Aside from a tendency to hobbyhorse in certain sea states they are a quality vessel.

Spending a lot of time this summer sailing around Portland in the Casco Bay with a few friends, might head down to Gloucester occasionally. Never gets old.
