Still looking for good stuff for the Pastebin and Imgur. Maybe we can get a list of Youtube vids and put them in the Pastebin or keep a couple important ones in the OP.

New here and to the hobby. WHy are there more models of poles and reels than their are species of fucking fish to catch?

Seriously, went to Bass Pro, Big 5, and still don't know what to fucking buy to catch a stinking trout. Yeah yeah you'll say the Hello kitty $19.99 Full Combo Kit will catch it, so will the $199 helium filled pole & $300 shimanno reels so what the fuck.

I mean any predator fish will go for any lure or bait that replicates prey. A common rule when fishing artificial bait is to match what the fish are actually feeding on in that body of water. But even then, sometimes it is better to present a more opportunistic meal. Sometimes when bass are chasing baitfish, I will throw a similar size and color Rapala right near by and they don't go for it. But then I toss a little crawdad bait near where the baitfish are being chased and the bass pick it up instantly.

As for size, you will generally have better luck hooking and landing fish with the largest bait and hook that they can get in their mouth since the larger hook will get a better grip (especially on largemouth bass). But other times if the bite is slow and the fish aren't actively hunting and feeding, you want to go with a smaller finesse presentation. For bass in warm summer water, smaller finesse worms will work better than a big spinnerbait. And then with the Mayan cichlids, they have small mouths but some days they will be attacking big crankbaits that they can't even get close to taking down. Other days they won't touch anything besides real tiny grub type baits.

But it is different for every lake, every species, every weather condition, and every season. So trial and error as well as asking locals will get you learned the best.
>>
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a spinning rod with a low profile baitcaster?
>>
>>974421
Name, materials, quality, and there are all different weights, sizes, and action of each model. Just pick up an Ugly Stik and wobble it around and then pick up the same size and weight G. Loomis and you will see the difference.
>>
>>974424
Is this something that people actually do or is that all you have and you're trying to nig rig it?
>>
>>974421
Spinning combo I assume for the trout?

Just go with 2000-2500 size reel like a Pfluegur President or a Shimano Sedona paired with a 6'-7'1" ultra light-medium light rod with a medium to fast action. Brands for the rod are preference so the best way to find what you like is to find all the rods that meet the specifications above and see how they stack up with each other
>>
>>974429
... or make it simple and buy a combo. Or just ask an employee before buying a 2500 size reel, 20lb mono, and a 6' UL rod.
>>
>>974432
I mean obviously thats an option but most low end combos are junk
>>
>>974423
Thanks! Every time I've fished in the last 10 years (maybe 5-6 times) I've been skunked.
Was discouraged, now want to try it again now that I have $ and more importantly, time.
>>
>>974424
Disadvantages: either the rod or reel will be upside-down.

Not enough handle behind the reel to power cast.

Guides too small, causes unnecessary line stress on retrieve and greater friction on cast.

That for starters.

Advantages: kill two birds with one rod?
>>
>>974439
Sorry. I was thinking bait cast rod for spinning reel. Probably not as bad as the combo I was dissing.

My first bluegill this year. I guess I finally found a pond that wasn't dominated by crappie or perch.

First time at this pond near my uni. Was drained last year I think- wasn't expecting much but got great action, and a lot of bites without hookups.

About 3 fish unhooked right after breaking water.

Good ol crappie tubes did the magic

You don't have to go crazy. If you want to start going for bluegill and other smaller stuff with artificial bait, some jigheads and curly tail grubs always do work. I have caught so many fish on white PowerBait curly tail grubs. Otherwise I think I mentioned in the Pastebin that a couple great starter lures are inline spinners like Rooster Tails and Mepps and then stickbaits or jerkbaits or whatever we call them on Tuesdays like Original Rapalas or Husky Jerks or any other brand. They are all easy to use and easy to land fish on. Just pick the right size for whatever fish you are targeting, cast, and reel in with some slight pauses and jerks. When you feel the bite, give it a little jerk to set the hook and land the feeeesh.

Could be, or could be more of a green sunfish. It's hard to tell sometimes. Pumpkinseeds normally have a real round body with a small mouth but that one is young plus maybe just the pic makes the body look longer. Green sunfish have a body shape closer to that and can have the orange belly and real nice colors but you can normally tell by the big mouths.

Used to catch all different species of bluegill/bream in IL but now I ever get here are these boring ones with no color. At least we get all sorts of cichlids.

Yeah, tons of largemouth. Those gar are native too I think. I'm sure there are catfish. But around here in South Florida, the cichlids greatly outnumber bluegill almost everywhere I have fished. I guess it used to be oscars until there was a really cold winter and then the Mayans took over everywhere.

>>974560
Not sure. Never caught one, but lots of Mayans in the Everglades. If anything, the oscars probably would've done worse inland since it gets colder the further you get from the ocean. And then there were these jaguar cichlids that anon found in the little pond in Weston. I have seen some other ones too, I think lots of convicts? but never caught them because they are smaller and one time I saw bright orange ones that I think were Midas cichlids.

Either way the Mayans are more fun to catch than bluegill so I don't really mind.

There are an absolute shitload of spotted and blue tilapia in the spots I regularly fish, and I've seen and caught some jewel cichlids too. The jewels are too tiny to bother with, but it's fun to yank them out of the water with a crappie pole when I get skunked otherwise.

Shame about the tilapia though; they won't usually take a hook. Once or twice I've managed to harass the spotted tilapia into taking a jig if they're in spawn and guarding a bed.

Already been said but:
- Brand
- Action
- Power
- Lure/Line Raiting
- Baitcast/Spincast/Spinner/Fly/Ice/Cane Pole

If you want top-dollar then St. Croix makes some phenomenal spinning rods for trout with nice warranties depending on what model you go with... of course I can furnish a whole fucking tackle bag for their cost. Going inexpensive Berkley makes light and ultralight rods in their "AMP" line that feel amazing. Super sensitive tip perfect for small jig spinners, inlines, tiny crankbaits, etc... but their downside is pic related. Be prepared to replace the guides in short time if you're consistently hooking into 2+ lb fish or anything that fights particularly hard. I figure these rods are geared more toward sunfish, crappie and the like and I was hooking into 3+ lb largemouth and snakehead left and right. Still I was upset these guides went to shit in only a couple months.

General advice would be to avoid rods with similar looking guides to the Berkley AMP series. Next time you're at a BPS or the sort look at the guides on a basic model Berkley Lightning Rod and then look for a Berkley Lightning "Shock" rod and see the guides on that. The ones on the shock used to come on the original IM6 Lightnings as well and are far superior.than that super-soft steel they're throwing on their shit now.

As for reels I'm a fan of the Abu Cardinal SX line. Most of my spinning rods use an SX-10. Inexpensive and effective. You could spend way more on a spinning reel but I don't see the point. My cardinals are running several years strong fishing brackish water and with just a bit of cleaning/oiling/greasing.
>>
>>974444
Haven't fished Okuma rods but that sounds about right for largemouth and and maybe catfish as long as you don't over-tighten the drag or horse them too much. I'm years late but I've been using 1/8 oz weighted-weedless wacky hooks with senkos for laregemouth lately with great success. I don't think it'd be too big for trout either. For those and laregemouth I love to use jig spinners with a 1/16 or 1/8 oz jig head, #3 or #4 colorado blade and either 4" or 5" single-tail Yamamoto Grubs. Inline spinners would probably be fine too although I've never personally had much luck with them.

12' flat-bottom jon boat, two deep-cycle batteries, 50lb thrust trolling motor. It ain't much but it's about 30 years old and thick-gauge aluminium which takes a hell of a lot more beating than the newer thin shit. Of course it weighs a metric fuck-tonne more as a result and I almost only take it out if I'm fishing with my pops (extra pair of hands helps a lot, even with a cheapo harbor freight trailer). Eventually I'll find myself a Yak for solo fishing.

Heard a lot about the Ugly Stik GX2. The combos were on sale for $20 so I grabbed one. How are they?
>>
>>975157
Good for live bait and not breaking, but not much else. The casting rods are okayish.
>>
>>975158
Meh, that's all I need it for. Was going to use it to soak bait while I use lures on my other rod.
>>

It'll do you good then. I would've bought one for $20 too.

They're more than good enough. I've fished for nearly 10 years using a set of shimano rod/reel combos that cost me 30 bucks a piece and I've caught everything from panfish to bass to stocked rainbow trout to giant ass flatheads and black drum and even smallish black tip sharks.

You *do not* need to drop hundreds of dollars in order to get a rod and reel.

I got a Perception Striker for Christmas. My first ever kayak so I spent the first couple of months waiting for it to get warm and getting the basics of kayaking down.

I installed another rod holder on the port side, which has already made a huge difference. I likely won't be installing a depth/fish finder until my birthday, though. I also want to install a paddle and stakeout pole holders, along with a rudder as the thing tracks like shit.

Depends how hardxcore angler you tryin to be. Imo it looks like some tryhard shit but I guess if it's one of those days where you want all the attention in the lake on your lure and the 4 blade Terminator T-1 spinnerbait isn't getting the job done, break out the heavy huckin' rod and throw the umbrella rig.
>>
>>975176
what'd you buy? I want in on this
>>
>>975176
>You *do not* need to drop hundreds of dollars in order to get a rod and reel.

I agree with this, especially if you're just starting. When I first started I was using literally a $20 combo from Walmart. It wasn't great by any means, but it would work.

That being said, if you find out you really like fishing, there's no reason not to buy nicer things.
>>
>>975054
Top tier for trolling. My uncle and grandpa have caught tons of lm bass and striper with umbrellas. Also need a down rigger and go just a few knots on throttle
>>
>>975183
Perhaps "top-dollar" wasn't the right phrase. Would you have preferred I directed them to some super limited Megabass run now available only on eBay for five times the original cost, or maybe an Oyster fly rod for a few grand? St. Croix' more expensive spinning rods easily reach $500 USD and for that I can put together two nice Abu baitcast rod/reel combos, line them, fill a 3700 series box full of new lures for each setup, and still have money left over. I could even go with Max series reels instead of Revos, and store-brand (Bass Pro/Gander Mtn branded) rods and come up with four perfectly acceptable, purpose-assembled setups ready to roll.

Been a long time. Cali has been getting pounded with rain basically nonstop. Finally got my first good day of fishing of 2017 in and its almost the end of March. Catfishing is the most boring type of fishing there is. You can hardly even consider it fishing at all. What does it take you, 2 mins to bait your rod, throw it out and get it all situated? Then it's just fuckig off doing nothing until a cat shit shows up. Sure, some of them get big but who gives a fuck? It's still a catfish
>>
>>975471
You make it sound like waiting for a good fish is a bad thing.

You dont need to solely target cats, get another rod and fish for another species with lures. And it's optimal fishing if you want to do something else like cook on the shore or something else busy.

>>
>>975531
Tackle use is pretty localized to the current season, weather, and the water body you're on. The best luck you're gonna have is asking anglers you see on the water what they're having success with. Alternatively, ask the people at your local tackle shop what they're using where. It's hard to go wrong with live night crawlers, and by extension rubber worms if you're targeting a sight-hunter. They're what I try first on a new body of water.
>>
>>975531
a lot of lures, if not all, that are popularized to catch one fish can catch a lot of other fish.
As long as the fish can take the hook in their mouth, you can probably catch a fish on it.
It's more about situations I think, like frogs are for topwater which usually only works for bass in the summer where the bass are active and the top is also full of vegetation.
Small crappie jigs work for crappie, but also bluegill, perch, bass, and pickerel.
Go with something small when starting out- dont worry big fish do take small lures, and you'll have fun catching the small ones starting out (and plenty of people still like catching small ones as well)

Id suggest picking up very light crappie jig hooks, like 1/32 ounce, and getting crappie tubes or curly tail grubs to put on them.
Just yesterday got great bluegill action on them, and one bass.

Then also some EWG hooks with a zoom fluke, which can be fished weedless and it can score you some bass/pike looking for a good meal
>>

One day I will try out a pier, maybe out by the hudson where my grandparents live.
But for now ive always liked the freshwater setting more. It's simply not about how big the fish you but where and how
>>
>>975533

It was smooth until you put it under load, the retrieval speed was very good, the rolling line pickups were nice. Due to the static spool it would not run braid since it would dig into itself. It would be fine for mono and fluoro though, but so would a regular zebshit or abumatic with ceramic or whatever metal pickup pins. I took it back and got a Tatula CT 100HS instead.

It was also too damn heavy. Internals looked great but there should have been more consideration for weight savings instead of over engineering. Lastly it looks just plain retarded with the "X" on it.

>>975542

It's basically the same concept as an open spinning reel but it has a bell housing looking thing with a pickup pin instead of a bail/wire. Pushing the button retracts the pickup pin and pushes the bell forward allowing the line to freely come off the spool. They are almost always tiny spools which negatively affects casting distance.
>>
>>975546
It's not even about fresh vs salt. Pepsi only catches bass under a pound and lools down on people who don't.

Its not a waste of money at all.
It does depend on where youre going out at and what fish are biting. A lot of charters are just meat fishing so again it depends. I have had tons of fun on charter boats, never really had any problems with the capt or deckies being rude. Ive seen more drunken customers act like assholes than crew members.
If its your first charter then when the deckhand gives the talk in the beginning of the ride let them know youre new to this type of fishing. be observant to what the other fishermen are doing, how they are rigging and dont be afraid to ask questions.
What area do you plan to find a charter?

They say the best and worst day of your life is buying and selling a boat. Biggest rockfish I ever caught was on a charter boat.

Only downside is how crowded some get. One's I've seen will have a a dozen people or so, on a boat rated for 60 people. So pretty much 1 person every 4-5ft, which ISN'T BAD, but at times can be in your way.

That seems like it'd be more useful as a shaky head jig than for texas rigging. Unless you're using a buoyant-tailed soft plastic (a la shaky head) it isn't going to generate any more action than a traditional pegged bullet weight. If using it as a shaky head are there any other benefits other than being able to choose what hook you're attaching to it? Not to downplay, that's a pretty big selling point over stuff like pic related. Just curious if there's more to it. It doesn't look like you can quick-swap hooked plastics without having to retie every time but if you can that'd make more worthwhile.

A mold for those cheburashka weights they are talking about. They pour their own weights it seems. Used to be easy to do but I think it's getting more expensive, especially in some states that are increasing regulations against the use of lead. At one point in time you could go by most any auto shop and pick up a bucket of lead tire balancing weights for next to nothing, melt them down into ingots, then remelt the ingots as you need them to pour your own jig heads, sinkers, etc. Not sure where you'd go now to easily source lead.

I'm putting a meme casting rig together for throwing relatively light cranks and inlines (1/4th oz to 1/2) I'll probably mostly use in fresh with the occasional use in brackish water. What braid size would you recommend? I'm split between 15 and 20lb
>>
>>976171
I really like 15lb. Feels like running 6lb mono where you can still toss 1/8oz baits well and you can still rip bass out of weeds.

>>
>>976214
I dont get why people go by weight, it varies so much and might only show if the catch just happened to be eating a lot.
Length is a nice representation of age and growth.
You can even cheat with weight in numerous ways

Why not measure both?

that's actually a good idea, im used to just holding it between my legs or my arm. But i figure you're in some swifter water and could use that insurance.

Metal detectors do something similar so they can just drop their detector at their side when they got to dig, so perhaps this is a good idea for when you gotta pick up a fish

Any other /out/ bros in the Ice belt regions still ice fishing?

On Lower Red Lake fishing was extended to April 4th, so im planning on hitting the lake. The ice is still 17 inches thick, but due to "honeycombing" and rotting ice spots, cars, trucks and ATV's are advised to stay clear off the lake. Only foot traffic is recommended.

Pic is a friend of mine who landed a march madness walleye. Not sure of what the exact measurements and weight, but it's a trophy out of red for sure.

bro northern growth rates are so fucking slow. sustainability is a thing, you must be from the south where literally you can poach 200 fish out a day from a well-maintained lake and not make a dent

No, but there are currents and shit is dredged so you gotta be careful. The inlet when the tide is moving (which is most of the time) is such a pain in the ass.
