Pretty much just get some basic gear and get out there. It for sure helps to have a buddy that's also into hiking/bushcraft/whatever, but not necessary by any means. If you have a car, I'd recommend just driving out to some public property (Or where ever you Scots go camping) and pitch a tent, roll out a sleeping bag and enjoy nature for a night. Heck, even a couple hours /out/ is good enough. This would also give you a good source of exercise. Just gathering fire wood and dealing with uneven terrain will get you in better shape. Knowing that you're already going /out/ might also get your BF to take you a bit more seriously when you ask to go hiking, though that involves knowing his personality, so I'm just guessing.
